The Kremlin has condemned the EU’s plan to increase defense spending across the bloc, calling it a path towards confrontation that hinders peace efforts with Ukraine.
During an emergency summit in Brussels on Thursday, EU leaders endorsed a €800 billion plan to “rearm Europe” proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
”The European Union is actively discussing its militarization, specifically in the defense sector,” the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Friday. The measures are “primarily aimed at Russia, which is, of course, a matter of deep concern,” he added.
French President Emmanuel Macron claimed on Wednesday that Russia poses a direct threat to France and the entire EU. He echoed von der Leyen’s calls for a significant increase in defense spending to counter perceived danger posed by Moscow.
Macron’s comments adhered to the conventional Western narrative portraying Russia as the unprovoked aggressor in the Ukraine conflict and claiming that Moscow has ambitions of conquest in Ukraine and beyond into EU and NATO states.
Russia has repeatedly and categorically denied the claims.
Moscow will however, take measures to safeguard its security in response to the bloc, Peskov has warned.
“The kind of confrontational rhetoric and confrontational plans that we are now seeing in Brussels and in European capitals strike a seriously discordant note with intentions to find a peaceful resolution in Ukraine,” Peskov added.
Russia and the United States launched negotiations last month to try and settle the Ukraine conflict, sidelining the EU. The move sparked condemnation from the bloc.
Moscow has argued the EU’s aggressive stance made it unfit to take part in peace talks. Trump has also reportedly halted American military aid to Ukraine, leaving Brussels jostling for funds to support Kiev.
Moscow maintains that Western aid prolongs the war without altering its outcome.

Kiev claims first combat use of French jets
Moscow has previously dismissed the Mirage 2000 as inferior to modern Russian fighters
Ukraine has deployed French-supplied Mirage 2000 fighter jets in combat for the first time, Air Force spokesman Yury Ignat announced on Friday. The aircraft were used overnight to counter a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the spokesman stated.
Kiev received its first batch of fourth-generation jets from France last month. Last October, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed that Ukrainian pilots were being trained in France to operate the aircraft.
In a Facebook post, Ignat claimed that the jets intercepted over 100 Russian drones and 34 missiles, while also preventing ten missiles from reaching their targets. Ukrainian army spokesman Dmitry Likhovi acknowledged the deployment, noting that the strikes coincided with the first large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine’s infrastructure since Washington halted military aid in an effort to encourage negotiations with Moscow.
The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed carrying out an overnight strike on Ukrainian energy facilities that support Kiev’s military-industrial complex. It stated that all intended targets were destroyed but did not address Ukraine’s reported use of Mirage 2000 jets. The ministry also reported that Russian forces have conducted seven group strikes across Ukraine since early March, targeting military airfields, ammunition depots, and drone control centers.
France initially announced plans to supply Mirage 2000 jets to Ukraine last summer, but deliveries were repeatedly delayed. While the total number of aircraft provided remains undisclosed, Le Journal du Dimanche reported in October that Ukraine was expected to receive only six planes.
Russian defense conglomerate Rostec has dismissed the Mirage 2000 as outdated, calling it “significantly inferior” to modern Russian fighters. A company representative previously argued that the aircraft share structural vulnerabilities with US-made F-16s, limiting their effectiveness near the frontlines. The long-anticipated delivery of F-16s to Ukraine has had minimal impact on the battlefield, with Kiev losing its first jet during a maiden combat mission in September 2024, and reports of their operational use remaining scarce.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) revealed that a Homeland Security whistleblower told the committee Walz was a “target” of the Chinese Communist Party as “someone they can get to DC.”
The whistleblower continued, “officials from DHS’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have been involved in the Department’s investigative and/or intelligence work connected with the CCP, the state of Minnesota, and Governor Walz.”

Trump mulls pulling US troops out of Germany – Telegraph
The president is reportedly outraged by the EU’s attitude towards the Ukraine conflict
US President Donald Trump is considering withdrawing American troops from Germany and redeploying them to Hungary, The Telegraph reported on Friday, citing a person close to the White House.
The US has more than 35,000 personnel stationed in dozens of bases in Germany. The NATO member also hosts American nuclear weapons.
Trump reportedly could remove the troops or move them elsewhere, as his administration has split with many of its allies in Europe over how to deal with Russia and resolve the Ukraine conflict. While the US president stressed the need to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible and blamed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the hostilities, the UK and many EU members reaffirmed their commitment to back Kiev.
“Trump is angry that they [Europe] appear to be pushing for war,” a source told The Telegraph.
US national security spokesman Brian Hughes told the newspaper that “while no specific announcement is imminent, the US military is always considering the redeployment of troops around the world to best address current threats to our interests.”
Trump has repeatedly accused Germany of not spending enough on its own defense, while his adviser, tech billionaire Elon Musk, openly endorsed the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the recent parliamentary election. Vice President J.D. Vance also ruffled feathers last month when he criticized Germany’s free speech laws during a high-profile conference in Munich.
Friedrich Merz, Germany’s chancellor-designate, has argued that Trump deliberately escalated his contentious February 28 meeting with Zelensky in the Oval Office. After winning the election last month, Merz stated that Germany could no longer rely on the US for its defense. “We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe,” he said.
Earlier this week, Hungary blocked a joint EU statement promising more military aid for Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban sided with Trump during his public spat with Zelensky. “Today, President Donald Trump stood bravely for peace. Even if it was difficult for many to digest,” he wrote on X.

FCC’s Brendan Carr Advances Investigation into NPR, PBS Running ‘Prohibited’ Ads
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr advanced his investigation into NPR and PBS running “prohibited” commercials.
Carr ordered an investigation in early January into the taxpayer-funded NPR and PBS, believing the nonprofits are running commercials that they are barred from airing.
“I am concerned that NPR and PBS broadcasts could be violating federal law by airing commercials,” Carr wrote at the time. “In particular, it is possible that NPR and PBS member stations are broadcasting underwriting announcements that cross the line into prohibited commercial advertisements.”
Public broadcasting stations are prohibited from running commercials, and instead they often air corporate underwriting spots, which cannot issue a “call to action” to urge listeners to purchase a product or service.
An FCC source said, at the end of last week, the agency sent out 15 letters of inquiry, two to NPR and PBS, and 13 letters to their affiliates, seeking to know more about their advertising and prospective underwriting practices.
Some of these stations include WETA, the Washington, DC, PBS station, WAMU, the American University NPR local affiliate in the D.C. area, and WNYC, a New York City NPR affiliate in the Big Apple.
“For my own part, I do not see a reason why Congress should continue sending taxpayer dollars to NPR and PBS given the changes in the media marketplace,” Carr continued.
This is not the only inquiry the FCC has taken since Carr has led the telecommunications regulatory agency.
In late February, the FCC opened a probe into Verizon’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices. He had previously opened an inquiry into Comcast’s DEI practices.
“In order to aid the FCC’s resolution of these matters, please reach out to the agency personnel that have been working on Verizon’s pending transactions at the FCC,” Carr wrote.
Carr has described these sort of DEI practices as “invidious forms of discrimination” that could be in violation of “FCC regulations and civil rights laws.”

The Trump administration is unfairly penalizing Beijing despite its efforts to be a reliable global partner, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of pursuing “two-faced” policies and vowed to “resolutely counter” growing sanctions pressure as tensions between the two economic powerhouses continue to simmer.
Since Trump took office, the US has doubled tariffs on all Chinese imports, from 10% to 20%, adding to existing duties on thousands of Chinese goods. Last month, the US president also ordered new tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada, citing the need to protect American interests and pointing to concerns over trade imbalances, illegal immigration, and the flow of illegal drugs into the US.
Speaking on the sidelines of China’s annual parliamentary meeting on Friday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemned Washington for imposing punitive tariffs despite what he called Beijing’s efforts to act as a reliable global partner and help tackle America’s fentanyl crisis.
“If one side blindly exerts pressure, China will resolutely counter that,” Wang warned. “No country can imagine that it can suppress China on one hand while developing good relations with China on the other hand.”
The Chinese government has responded with additional tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on various US goods, including agricultural products and energy commodities. Beijing has also placed export and investment restrictions on 25 US firms and filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that US tariffs violate international trade rules. Beijing has urged Washington to resolve its concerns through dialogue.
According to Wang, the US “should not repay kindness with grievances, let alone impose tariffs without reason,” referring to the “various assistance” Beijing has provided to curb fentanyl precursor flows into the US. Washington has accused China of supplying chemicals used in the illicit production of the synthetic opioid.
Reflecting on the two nations’ tech competition, Wang said that blockades spawn breakthroughs and suppression drives innovation. He also took broader aim at US policies, warning that major powers “should not bully the weak.”

Some people still “can’t get over” Napoleon’s defeat by Russia, President Vladimir Putin has said. He made the comments after French President Emmanuel Macron called Moscow a threat to his country.
In a televised address on Wednesday, Macron said Russia is a “threat to France and Europe” and that he is considering expanding the French nuclear umbrella to protect other EU member states.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called Macron’s speech “highly confrontational,” adding that Paris is “apparently contemplating war.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov compared the French president to Napoleon, whose disastrous invasion of Russia eventually led to his downfall.
Putin also referred to Napoleon's infamous retreat from Moscow during his meeting with the members of the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation in Moscow on Thursday. After subduing most of continental Europe, Napoleon led his army of 600,000 men into Russia, which was ruled by Tsar Alexander I at the time. Despite occupying Moscow after the bloody battle of Borodino, Napoleon was unable to make the Russians surrender and was forced to hastily retreat, losing the majority of his army in the process.

Lithuania has argued that the move will strengthen its defenses
Lithuania officially withdrew from an international treaty that bans cluster munitions on Thursday.
The Baltic state’s parliament (the Seimas) voted overwhelmingly to leave the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) last July.
“The need to use all possibilities to strengthen deterrence and defense is the driving force behind the proposal to denounce the convention. Since Lithuania became a party to the convention, the security situation has deteriorated substantially, and threats to Lithuania’s security have changed,” Deputy Defense Minister Renius Pleskys said at the time.
Cluster munitions detonate in mid-air, releasing many small bomblets over a wide area. Humanitarian organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, have campaigned against the ordinances due to their indiscriminate nature and because many bomblets fail to detonate on impact, posing threats to civilians after the conflict is over.
Of the NATO countries, the US, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland are not members of the CCM. Other states that have not signed the convention include Russia, Ukraine, China, India, Pakistan, and Brazil.
The Seimas described cluster munitions on its website as “a very effective defensive tool because they can be used to defend a large area and increase the effectiveness of defense against targets that occupy large areas.”
According to national broadcaster LRT, the Lithuanian authorities are also considering withdrawing from the 1997 Ottawa Treaty which bans anti-personnel mines.

All of this served as a prelude to Friday’s fiery exchange with Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance, who accused Zelensky of having “disrespected” the US and ultimately told him to leave.

“Facts Do Matter”: Tom Homan Slams Mayorkas as a Liar “From Day One” on the Border Crisis
Border czar Tom Homan lit into former Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas Friday, saying the former Biden administration official “lied from day one” about the border.
Mayorkas claimed that the border was secure on multiple occasions during the Biden administration, despite the fact that the Border Patrol encountered millions of illegal immigrants since the start of fiscal year 2021, according to figures released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Homan said that Trump “shut down the border” in less than a month during an appearance on Fox News after a clip was played of Mayorkas claiming he opposed so-called “sanctuary cities.”
“Well, his lips are moving, means he’s lying. He lied from day one. The bottom line is, how did he do on that question and sanctuary cities? Sanctuary cities tripled under his command,” Homan said after “America’s Newsroom” host Dana Perino. “He said he wanted to do something about it, but he didn’t do it. The same time he’s talking about cities releasing public safety threats on the streets, how about what he did on the southern border? We had 2.2 million known gotaways they did nothing about. They released national security threats through the border. The released people so quickly, they released them before venting came back from the FBI. He was a failure as secretary of Homeland Security.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Feb. 25 that only 200 illegal immigrants were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, the lowest total in 15 years. “America’s Newsroom” co-host Bill Hemmer then played a clip of Mayorkas bemoaning “the decline of empiricism” when it came to the border, asking Homan to respond.
“Facts do matter. Under [Mayorkas’] leadership, a 600% increase in sex trafficking of women and children. To 2.2 million known gotaways, people we knew cross the border. You had a record number of people on terrorist watch, over 400,” Homan continued. “Trump had 14 in four years. We had a quarter million Americans die from fentanyl coming across that open border. Massive failure, an embarrassment to the position he holds.”
Hemmer and Perino then played a cut of Democrats pushing for the passage of a border bill negotiated in 2024 by Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona that would have allowed up to 5,000 illegal immigrants a day to cross the border. Homan called out that provision of the bill.
“A bill from Congress might be welcome, but you all have shown in one month you are able to shut down the border,” Perino said.
“Because we have a strong president. President Trump did in three weeks what Joe Biden didn’t do in four years. That bipartisan border bill, I respect Senator Lankford, he calmly walked through that bill with me. He asked me to support and I said no. I’m not okay with four or 5,000 illegal immigrants crossing the border being normal. I don’t want that in statute. I’m not okay with a bill that doesn’t address sex trafficking of women and children,” Homan said.
“And right now, you look at what President Trump just did, we went from an average and the highs of 10 to 11,000 per day under Biden to 200, 11,000 to 200. The gotaways we spoke about, 1800 per day average under Joe Biden, do you know what I saw the other day? 41, 1,800 to 41. We won’t be happy until that number’s at zero. Look at the strides President Trump made in three weeks,” the border czar added.

The San Francisco Human Rights Commission is looking into the spa after receiving numerous complaints.
A Russian spa in San Francisco named Archimedes Banya stirred up controversy after it excluded transgender people from its "ladies only" night in order to preserve the "phallic-free" space.
The night at the full nude spa is only scheduled once a month, but transgender people and their allies expressed outrage that the spa was trying to exclude biological males from the ladies' night.
'Will a phallus-free trans man showing up to their ladies-only night be accepted or rejected? It’s totally unclear.'
“It’s NOT about one night! It’s a symptom of a deeper problem and it’s gonna become worse if we don’t speak up against it now,” said one account on Reddit whose name referred to Satanic themes, according to the San Francisco Standard.
Razelle Swimmer, a transgender person from Oakland who had bottom surgery, canceled a plan to go to the spa as a birthday treat, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Swimmer was infuriated and devastated over the new policy.
"I don't have a phallus," Swimmer said. “I have been erased in that statement, and it has almost certainly erased trans men from this. Will a phallus-free trans man showing up to their ladies-only night be accepted or rejected? It’s totally unclear.”
Abhishek Vaidya, the general manager of the spa, said in an email to the Standard that the spa was trying to respect women with cultural and religious beliefs related to being in the presence of nude people who were born biological males.
“We need to help religious women and tried to navigate an important conversation about inclusivity, safety, and respect,” he wrote. “We recognize that our words did not fully reflect our values, and for that, we are truly sorry.”
The Standard noted that other spas in San Francisco had no restrictions on transgender people, including a Japanese spa and a Korean one as well.
In response to complaints, San Francisco Human Rights Commission officials told the Chronicle that they were “analyzing the business's policy and all inquiries to determine next steps.”
Rafael Mandelman, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, said that people might be sensitive because of actions taken by President Donald Trump to restrict the transgender agenda in the U.S.
“In this hyper-fraught moment, where everything is political and trans and nonbinary folks are under assault, I think there’s a real desire at least in our little blue island to be protecting that population,” he said.
Not all transgender people were outraged, and some even said they were supportive of the monthly exclusion.
“I think that cis women having their own day isn’t that bad,” said a 25-year-old transgender person to the Standard. “No sane person goes to the banya every day of the month.”
Trangender protesters are picketing outside the business.

DHS Ends TSA Collective Bargaining After Bombshell Finding Of 'More Full-Time Union Workers' Than Airport Screeners
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is ending collective bargaining for Transportation Security Officers with the TSA, Fox News reports, citing a release obtained by Fox Business.
According to the report, The TSA has more people doing "full-time union work" vs. performing actual screening functions at 86% of US airports. Put another way, 374 out of 432 federalized airports have fewer than 200 TSA Officers to perform screening functions, while the rest are paid by the government but work "full-time on union matters" and do not retain certification to perform screening.
What's more, DHS cited a recent TSA employee survey which found that over 60% of "poor performers" are allowed to stay employed and "not surprisingly, continue to not perform."
(Also, maybe get rid of the nut-grabbers in the TSA patdown area when we don't want to submit to those Total Recall scanners made by Leidos - formerly SAIC).
According to DHS, eliminating collective bargaining will make airports more efficient by eliminating "bureaucratic hurdles that will enhance productivity, and lower passengers' wait times in security lines."
DHS says that TSA Officers will now be promoted based on performance vs. tenure or union membership.
"Thanks to [DHS] Secretary Noem’s action, Transportation Security Officers will no longer lose their hard-earned dollars to a union that does not represent them. The Trump Administration is committed to returning to merit-based hiring and firing policies," a DHS spokesperson said in a statement, adding "This action will ensure Americans will have a more effective and modernized [workforce] across the nation’s transportation networks—meaning shorter airport security wait times. TSA is renewing its commitment to providing a quick and secure travel process for Americans."

US Firm Maxar Disables Satellite Photos For Ukraine
American aerospace firm Maxar Technologies announce Friday it has disabled the ability of the Ukrainian government to access its satellite imagery, in conformity to President Trump's announced suspension of intelligence sharing with Kiev.
"Each customer makes their own decisions on how they use and share that data," Maxar described of its US government contracts. The contract in question which is impacted by the intelligence-sharing suspension is GEGD (the Global Enhanced GEOINT Delivery program).
he GEGD program provides access to commercial satellite imagery collected by the United States for partner nations and allies. Ukraine has apparently been blocked from further participation for the time being.
"The US government has decided to temporarily suspend Ukrainian accounts in GEGD," the Maxar statement said, referring reporters to the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency for any further questions.
"We take our contractual commitments very seriously, and there is no change to other Maxar customer programs," Maxar explained.
The CIA had on Wednesday confirmed blockage of all intelligence-sharing with Ukraine. President Trump on Friday linked any further sharing on Ukraine's willingness to enter peace negotiations with Moscow.
"Ukraine has to get on the ball and get a job done," Trump said, adding that the US is "trying to help" get peace negotiations moving.
But he admitted to reporters at the White House that it's currently more difficult for Washington to deal with Ukraine than with Russia, which has "all the cards" in the war. Watch:

In a fresh report in Le Monde Ukrainian military expert Ievhen Dyky has described that "The total ban on intelligence sharing is effective, both directly from the US to [Ukraine], but it is also a ban on NATO allies transferring data received from the US to us." He specified that the ban "applies to all forms of intelligence."
Reportedly the ability of the Ukrainians to receive targeting information for strikes inside Russia has been taken away as well. There was likely no chance of Moscow coming to the negotiating table so long as this ultra-provocative program was in place.
