15,000 march through Amsterdam for International Women’s Day

Some 15,000 people have taken part in the Feminist March through central Amsterdam to mark International Women’s Day.

“Given growing inequality, social injustice and global challenges, it is now time for action,” the organisers said in a press release. “This massive turnout shows that feminism is more relevant than ever.”

Carrying placards with texts such as “Abortion in the constitution” and “Keep your hands off my womb”, the demonstrators marched from the Dam in the heart of the city to Museumplein.

Bus and car traffic had to be diverted for a time because of the crowds.

“We have one slogan, ‘The future is feminist’,” said co-organiser Devika Partiman, from the Stem op een Vrouw organization, which encourages women to take part in politics. “It is nice and vague. We wanted to make sure people did not think that this is nothing for them,” she told the Parool.

Last year the march did not go ahead because the organisers said they were concerned about the safety of pro-Palestine demonstrators.
