Columbia Bible College (CBC) in Abbotsford, British Columbia, has faced stiff criticism and harsh punishments for refusing to play and forfeiting games against Vancouver Island University over its inclusion of transgender player Harriette Mackenzie. In one case, the team’s criticism spurred the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to dismiss the school’s ability to host the national tournament. The league officials also accused CBC of violating the civil rights of the trans player.
The team’s refusal to play VIU became a controversial action in the CCAA’s national tournament in a country where national laws require schools to allow transgender players to play any sport they wish under their assumed gender.
Despite all that, on Saturday, CBC won the CCAA women’s basketball national championship, beating St. Mary’s University 77-70 to win its first-ever national title, according to Fox Sports.

Speaking with Japan’s NHK, Sibiga claimed that Kiev had achieved its main objectives in the offensive but sees having a continued presence on Russian territory as providing leverage in future peace negotiations.
Ukraine launched its incursion across the internationally recognized Russian border into Kursk Region last August, capturing the town of Sudzha and numerous villages. However, the Russian military quickly halted the advance and has since been reclaiming lost ground. Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov said on Wednesday that 86% of the land previously occupied by Ukrainian forces had been retaken, leaving the remaining troops “encircled” and “isolated.”

The relief package includes easing licensing requirements for research, reducing mandatory employee security clearances, eliminating security alarms in storage areas, and scrapping mandatory annual reporting of advertising expenses.
The changes will lead to a “net reduction in costs” for businesses, according to the department.
Since Parliament repealed a 95-year ban on recreational cannabis in 2018, the industry has faced financial difficulties.
Bankruptcy records show 93 cannabis retailers, wholesalers, and distributors — including national chains — have filed for insolvency, many owing significant tax debts.
On February 5, Tricanna Industries Inc. of Mission, B.C., reported $3.2 million in liabilities, including $1.1 million owed to the Canada Revenue Agency, which had been considering “potential action” over unpaid excise taxes.
The Revenue Agency reported last year that the cannabis industry owed $269.8 million in taxes, with write-offs totaling $4.7 million as of September 21.
A 2023 Competition Bureau report found that 66% of licensed cannabis businesses were delinquent on their excise tax payments, and the total amount of unpaid duties had “continuously been rising since legalization.”

Canada’s labour market faces mounting pressures that cannot be fixed merely by adding more workers, according to a new report from the C.D. Howe Institute, which also recommends raising the retirement age.
In the inaugural “2024 Labour Market Review: Challenges, Trends, and Policy Solutions for Canada,” authors Parisa Mahboubi and Tingting Zhang argue Canada should delay the age of eligibility for full pension benefits, as has been done in other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.
"One of the most significant factors contributing to the variation in employment decisions across OECD countries is the normal age at which individuals can claim full pension benefits. For instance, in 2022, over 32 percent of Iceland’s population aged 65 and over was employed, although the normal retirement age is 67, with the earliest pension access at age 65. In contrast, only about 14% of Canada’s population in the same age group remained employed despite having a higher life expectancy. This discrepancy can be explained by Canada’s normal retirement age of 65, with pension benefits available as early as age 60," the report explains. Continue…

A parental rights group in Ontario is expressing concerns over free speech after a blogger was handed a heavy fine after accusing Ontario drag performers of "grooming" children.
In an email to supporters on Friday, Parents As First Educators highlighted the case of Brian Webster, a Thunder Bay blogger.
Last month, Webster was ordered by an Ontario judge to pay $380,000 in “damages” to Caitlin Hartlen, Felicia Crichton and John-Marcel Forget, and to the Rainbow Alliance Dryden.
On his online blog in 2022, Webster accused these parties of being “groomers." The performers accused him of “hate speech”.
The first post, made in September 2022, referenced CBC News coverage of an upcoming drag event in Dryden, Ontario which was then cancelled following a prank call. Webster shared screenshots of the news coverage and called the drag queens and king involved in the event "groomers."
In the December 2022 post, Webster referenced an upcoming drag storytime event in Thunder Bay and referred to "local drag queens who have been criminally charged with child pornography." But, according to CBC, no such charges had been laid.
In her decision, Justice Helen M. Pierce wrote, "There is a pattern of homophobic/transphobic conduct by the defendant's publication, both before and after the offending posts." She said Webster acted like a "common bully."
However, PAFE said, "Drag queens have had a self-induced negative spotlight shone on them in recent years due to their bizarre interest in performing and interacting with children. In B.C., a teacher read her kindergarten class a drag queen story book in place of teaching the traditional ABC’s. Various videos and photos have circled the internet of young children allegedly offering dollar bills to drag queens while the adults cheer and clap."

Pflag Canada, a national LGBTQ organization was pushing the Toronto District School Board to REMOVE their current “opt-out” policy for parents who don’t want their children to participate in school-related drag events. However, the board stood firm in its refusal.
PAFE wrotes, "None of this is appropriate, and if speaking out against it lands you with a $380,000 fine, where does that leave us?
"Is this the death knell of free speech in Canada? If citizens are being threatened and potentially bankrupted with legal costs and fines, how do we speak out for decency and common sense in Canada?"
