Germany has seized an oil tanker of the Russian shadow fleet that was found adrift in the Baltic Sea in January, German magazine Spiegel reported on Friday, quoting security sources.

The tanker, Eventin, was traveling under the flag of Panama when German authorities said in January that the vessel, belonging to the Russian shadow fleet, was stuck in German waters in the Baltic Sea.

The tanker had lost power and steering and was found adrift in the sea, north of the German island of Rügen.

Germany secured the vessel and blamed Russia for the use of a shadow fleet of tankers.

“Russia is endangering our European security not only with its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, but also with severed cables, displaced border buoys, disinformation campaigns, GPS jammers and, as we have seen, dilapidated oil tankers,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at the time.

A bronze statue of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky outside Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada, was defaced with feces on Friday morning. The incident followed the Edmonton Oilers’ overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets and an injury to star forward Connor McDavid that forced him to leave the game.

Canada had a mandatory military service policy twice in its entire history — during the First and Second World Wars. A total of nine other NATO countries have conscription: Greece, Türkiye, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Other countries like Israel, Singapore, Switzerland, Cambodia, Egypt and the United Emirates also have a conscription model.

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday night did another about-face and said he is committed to keeping the Liberals’ cap on Canadian energy.

Carney on Thursday while in Edmonton said he is willing to move away from the emissions cap, while his Environment Minister Terry Duguid contradictorily said this week said the Liberals plan to keep the emissions cap in place.

“I am focused on getting emissions down from the production and transportation of conventional oil and gas… Now there is a role for an emissions cap,” said Carney at a press conference after meeting with First Ministers.

News Council says Nazi comparisons go too far

A national press ombudsman has ruled that anti-Israel street protestors should not be equated with Nazis, calling such comparisons "overly broad."

Blacklock's Reporter says the National News Media Council found that linking demonstrators to the National Socialist German Workers’ Party was both inflammatory and historically inaccurate.

“The Council deliberated on the use of the word ‘Nazi,’” it stated, noting that the term should be applied carefully.

“Some thinkers have argued the term ‘Nazi’ should only be reserved for those responsible for the Holocaust,” the Council wrote. “Others have warned against making casual comparisons particularly without a well-considered awareness of history.”

The ruling stemmed from a complaint regarding an October 5 Toronto Sun column that claimed local anti-Israel protestors “hold the same views” as Nazis.

“The News Media Council determined in this case, suggesting the group of protestors ‘hold the same views’ as Nazis is overly broad and not supported by clear evidence,” the panel wrote.

“For this reason, the Council upheld this portion of the complaint.”

The complaint was filed by Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, an anti-Israel advocacy group. The organization includes former New Democrat MP Libby Davies (Vancouver East), a former deputy Party leader, and Northwest Territories MLA Shauna Morgan (Yellowknife North) among its directors.

A British Columbia judge has annulled the marriage of a woman to a fellow member of an India-based “cult group,” saying she didn’t “truly consent” to the 2023 wedding.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruling issued this week says Arshnoor Kaur Jaura claimed she was manipulated and overwhelmed by a “barrage” of overtures from Napinder Singh Jaura and his family that began in October 2022.

The ruling by Justice Ian Caldwell says the woman was an 18-year-old permanent resident in Canada when she was first contacted by the man, who lived in New Zealand and was around 32.

The ruling says she did not wish to marry but the man and his family “persisted,” bringing a “sacred food gift” to her workplace and claiming the union was “blessed” by a priest of the Dera Sacha Sauda religious group.

The man’s sister warned that refusing the marriage would invite “the wrath” of the religious community.

Caldwell’s ruling found the marriage “voidable,” saying the man “pursued, harassed, and perhaps even stalked” the teenager who was under duress when the wedding occurred in Abbotsford, B.C. Continue…

Nova Scotia has become the latest province to scrap electrical vehicle rebates for Teslas due to the CEO’s association with the U.S. administration and its trade war on Canada.

The Progressive Conservative government joined with the NDP and Liberal opposition parties in a vote dropping the electric automaker from the rebate program, which provides subsidies that range from $2,000 to $3,000 per purchase.

The vote came after Susan Leblanc, an NDP member of the legislature, called for an amendment dropping the Elon Musk-led company’s products from the subsidy program.

LeBlanc told the legislature that the owner of Tesla has aligned himself with U.S. president Donald Trump in “waging economic war on our country and this is a small way to take a stand against that.”

Earlier this week, Manitoba’s NDP government dropped Tesla and Chinese-made electric vehicles from its EV rebate program, while BC Hydro has also said it is banning new Tesla products from its electric vehicle rebate program.

Tesla’s communications division didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
