Earlier this week, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Public Works Minister Jean-Yves Duclos told reporters directly that Canadians will soon head to the polls. He made the comments considering both Carney being the new leader, and the fact that all opposition parties have said they would vote non-confidence against the Liberal minority government once parliament resumes on March 24.

“The opposition parties have been very clear for weeks and months now,” said Duclos, according to Blacklock’s Reporter. “They decided they would bring this government down regardless of what we could do.”

The Liberal Party on Sunday night elected self-proclaimed globalist and World Economic Forum-linked former central banker Carney as the new leader. Carney will be sworn in as PM this Friday.

In January, after announcing he would resign, Trudeau prorogued Parliament until March 24. A general election will take place sometime in late April or early May, should Carney officially ask the Governor General to dissolve parliament before March 24, which is expected.

Because Parliament is prorogued until March, Duclos said that this is “the last day we can be in government.”

“We’ll see whether we should call an election before.”

When a reporter asked him how “quickly” an election would come, Duclos replied, “We know the deadline is March 24.”

In addition to Duclos, Industry Minister Francois Phillipe-Champagne on Sunday, after Carney was elected, told reporters, “I think we’ve said we’re going to go to the polls to get a strong mandate fairly quickly so that we can have not only the team –the Liberal team–but the whole Canadian team with us.”

Speaking on the sidelines of the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston, Enbridge CEO Greg Ebel compared the task of planning and developing oil export lines to the ill-fated Meech Lake Accord to bring Quebec into the constitution.

Calgary-based Enbridge was the backer of both the Northern Gateway pipeline to Kitimat. The $8 billion project was cancelled in 2016 by the Trudeau government which refused to lift the tanker ban on the West Coast.

In an interview, Ebel said crossing provincial borders is often more difficult than crossing international ones, like the 49th parallel.

“As I've often said, the East-West pipe is a bit like the Meech Lake Accord, and that's hard to get everybody on the same page for the amount of time it actually takes to get regulatory and legislative approval.”

The BC NDP has tabled a bill that would give the government sweeping new powers to respond to moves made by President Donald Trump.

The move comes amid growing tensions between Canada and the United States as the latter continues to threaten the former with tariffs and annexation.

If passed, the legislation would allow for "fast, flexible regulation-making authorities to ensure we can act and be responsive to the unpredictable and quickly evolving threats to our economy, our economic security, and our sovereignty," with a "sunset clause" to repeal the powers on May 28, 2027.

Authorities would be able to create new laws covering anything pertaining to the economy without the approval of the legislature, including imposing tolls on Americans using British Columbian roads, bridges, and ferry terminals.

Also included in the bill are measures aimed at knocking down interprovincial trade barriers so products from across Canada to flow into British Columbia, and ensuring Canadian-made goods are prioritized in government procurement.

During a press conference in Victoria on Thursday, Eby said he wants to ensure his tariff response measures "minimize the impact on British Columbians, and maximize the impact on Americans, especially those Americans who can send a message to the president."

Eby also addressed concerns regarding the powers it would give him to act without the approval of the legislature.

"It's crucial that whatever the emergency is that the president incurs on us in an effort to damage us that we're able to respond quickly to minimize the damage," he said. "This is not everyday legislation … This is in an emergency situation where we need legislative authority, we need government authority to do something quickly to minimize damage to the economy, to people."

Eby said there were "a number of safeguards built in" to the bill to ensure the powers were only used in emergencies.

When asked whether it could be seen as a "power grab," Eby reiterated that the additional capabilities are "extraordinary authorities that would only, and should only, and by the legislation can only be used in extraordinary circumstances, that even if they are used they have to come to the legislature to be ratified" and "expire after a certain time."

An unnamed source told Radio-Canada that Guilbeault learned of the news earlier this week. Guilbeault endorsed Carney during the campaign and has not commented on the matter. The meeting of G7 countries’ top diplomats has started in Quebec, with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Joly saying “peace and stability” will top the agenda.

Joly said foreign ministers in the group will have a lot to tackle, including topics such as finding a path to lasting peace in Ukraine and fostering long-term stability in the Middle East.

“We should not be daunted by the task,” Joly said in her opening remarks at the meeting in Charlevoix, Que., on March 13.

Other topics on the agenda include building resilience in the Indo-Pacific region and discussing issues involving Haiti, Venezuela, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Canada holds the G7 rotating presidency this year and the foreign ministers’ meeting preludes a future gathering of leaders.

Moe warns Carney of industry shutdowns as ‘Liberal Legacy’ if trade wars continue

Premier Scott Moe is ramping up pressure on both Liberal leader Mark Carney and the federal Liberal government to deal with the escalating trade wars with the United States and China.

During a press conference on Thursday, Moe cautioned that inaction could lead to the closure of key industries across Canada, including agriculture, pork, and seafood.

“Mr. Carney, there are higher stakes at play here,” said Moe, stressing the potential for widespread job losses.

“There’s Canadian jobs at play.”

He also took aim at soon to be former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, linking the Liberals record to the threat of damage in the agriculture sector.

“That’s the legacy of the Liberal government,” said Moe.

“If they do not reach out to the Chinese government and try to at least attempt to have these tariffs removed. The impacts of these 100% tariffs on canola are going to impact all Canadians and it’s going to happen in weeks, not months.”

Moe warned that if Canada does not move quickly to resolve ongoing trade tensions with both President Donald Trump and China, provinces heavily reliant on exports could face dire consequences.

Carney has a European trip planned but nothing with the US or China, which Moe criticized as not being able to accomplish anything.

“We are an exporting province and I would say largely we are an exporting nation,” said Moe.

“We expect the federal government to urgently engage [with the US] prior to calling any election and cancel your trip to Europe if you need to.”

Moe urged federal leaders to protect Canadian businesses, calling for an end to punitive tariffs and a renewed focus on open dialogue to safeguard jobs and preserve Canada’s economic stability.

Health Minister Mark Holland has announced his resignation ahead of Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney's swearing-in ceremony.

Holland, who famously threatened that Canadian families planning road trips last summer were going to make the planet burst into flames, previously served Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government as House Leader and Whip.

He has been in politics since 1997.
