People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier said Canada cannot “win” in a trade war with the United States and urged Canadian officials to try to renegotiate a deal rather than enact “silly retaliatory tariffs.”
“Is it that difficult to understand? WE’RE NOT GOING TO WIN A TRADE WAR WITH THE US!” Bernier wrote on X last week.
“We’re hurting our own economy ten times more than theirs with these silly retaliatory tariffs and giving Trump just another pretext to escalate the dispute.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has routinely cited Canada’s lack of action on drug trafficking and border security as the main reasons for his punishing tariffs.
A little over a week ago, Trump announced he was giving Mexico and Canada a 30-day reprieve on 25 percent export tariffs for goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on free trade.
However, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, despite the reprieve from Trump, later threatened to impose a 25 percent electricity surcharge on three American states. Ford quickly stopped his planned electricity surcharge after Trump threatened a sharp increase on Canadian steel and aluminum in response to his threats.
Bernier said that Canadian officials need to stop “all forms of retaliation” and instead take Trump at his “word and tell him we accept his idea of having reciprocal tariffs, and that the best situation for both countries is therefore to lower all tariffs.”
“We should tell him that we’re willing to put dairy supply management on the table and get rid of the sky-high tariffs that protect this unfair system. We should tell him that we are open to lower or eliminate any other tariffs in the context of reciprocity,” he noted.
Bernier also said it is important for Canada as well as the U.S. to sit down and reopen the North American Free Trade Agreement and “have a wide-ranging discussion over all these issues.”

A website known as “Dogequest” has reportedly exposed the personal details of Tesla owners across the United States, displaying their names, addresses, and phone numbers on an interactive map, reports the New York Post.
The move appears to be an attempt to target Tesla drivers because of CEO Elon Musk’s connection to the Trump administration.
The site also features an image of a Molotov cocktail as its cursor and includes exact locations of Tesla dealerships. Musk has drawn scrutiny for his support of Trump, who has taken an antagonistic stance with Canada since his second term began. He recently wrote on his social media platform X that Canada is “not a real country.” His comments fueled public calls for action, including a petition seeking to revoke his Canadian citizenship. The petition argues Musk has “engaged in activities that go against the national interest of Canada” and “attacked Canadian sovereignty," essentially calling his actions treasonous.
British Columbia recently removed Tesla vehicles from a list of products eligible for provincial subsidies. The Carney Liberals are taking steps to address so-called "lost Canadians," a term used for individuals born outside Canada to Canadian parents who were also born abroad.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced an interim citizenship program to help those affected, while a judge has questioned the lack of details on how the program will work, according to the Globe and Mail.
In 2009, the Conservative government changed citizenship laws to prevent Canadians born abroad from passing their citizenship to their children unless the child was born in Canada. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled in late 2023 that this law was unconstitutional, and the government agreed with the decision.
Since then, the federal government has received three deadline extensions to pass new legislation. Now, with the current deadline set to expire on March 19, Miller’s department is seeking a 12-month extension. While waiting for legislation, Miller announced that affected individuals born or adopted before December 19, 2023 will be eligible for discretionary citizenship grants. Those born or adopted after that date may also qualify if they have a Canadian citizen parent who has lived in Canada for at least three cumulative years.
This three-year requirement was part of previous legislation aimed at resolving the issue, but the bill died when Parliament was prorogued in January.
On March 13, Ontario Superior Court Justice Jasmine Akbarali extended the deadline temporarily, until April 25, but criticized the government for not providing enough details on how it would implement interim measures.
“There is no evidence of what policy will be adopted to implement its intention,” Akbarali stated in her decision. “There is no evidence about how any such policy will be communicated to people affected by the unconstitutional legislation.”
She added that more information is needed before granting a further extension.
Sujit Choudhry, a lawyer representing those who challenged the law, argued in court that the government should only receive a four-month extension rather than the requested 12 months. He suggested the longer request was due to the likelihood of an upcoming federal election. Choudhry pointed out that courts have granted four-month extensions in the past to allow governments to pass court-mandated legislation during election periods.
The federal government, in its court submission, warned that failing to pass new legislation before the deadline could result in some individuals automatically gaining citizenship while others remain excluded.
The court heard arguments on the matter Thursday morning, and a decision is expected soon.

The closed-door meeting at the White House comes as additional tariffs are expected to go into effect the first week of April. It will be the first meeting of its kind the president has attended since he returned to office on January 20.
Trump is expected to discuss policies that would lead the US in “energy dominance,” reported oil and gas publication Argus Media.
"We appreciate the opportunity to discuss how American oil and natural gas are driving economic growth, strengthening our national security and supporting consumers with the president and his team," said API.

Now, the tiny hamlet of Caroline is becoming Ground Zero in the battle against contentious renewable power plants on prime agricultural farm land.
And if a Tuesday public meeting is any indication, it’s about to turn into an all-out war against what residents see as ‘woke renewable energy’ in general and the UCP government’s electricity policies and the mandate — or lack thereof — of the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to enforce them.
About 150 people turned out for a public meeting in the local community centre to discuss strategies to fight conditional development approval that had been granted by the AUC late on Friday, February 28.
Although relatively small in numbers, it represented nearly a third of the entire population of the town, which numbers about 500 men, women and children — but not including a presumably equal or greater number of pets.
And despite project developer PACE Canada LP insistence that the vast majority of residents support it — 71% either submitted no reponse or supported it in a survey — the concensus that emerged is that the majority clearly do not.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) has confirmed an unspecified number of Canadians have been executed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) so far in 2025.
The federal agency indicated Robert Schellenberg, a man from British Columbia who was sentenced to the death penalty in January 2019, and lost an appeal in 2021, is still alive.
There are currently roughly 100 to 115 Canadian citizens detained in Chinese prisons, some of them not heard from for years, and about five sentenced to death.
Alleged crimes are often related to drugs, and sometimes on religious or political grounds, such as the case of Huseyin Celil, a Uyghur imam from Xinjiang, a muslim minority region in Western China. Celil has been cut-off from consulate services and his family has not had any contact from him in more than a decade.
GAC spokeswoman Charlotte MacLeod confirmed to the Globe & Mail Canadians were executed in China this year, but would not identify who they were out of privacy for their families “during this difficult time.” Continue…
Trudeau collecting two pensions worth $8.4 million

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on party leaders to put an end to a second taxpayer-funded pension for prime ministers, arguing it’s an unnecessary burden on Canadians.
“Taxpayers can’t afford to keep covering Ottawa’s perks, and scrapping the prime minister’s second pension would be a good place to start saving money,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF.
“Prime ministers already earn nearly six times more than the average Canadian and receive a generous MP pension — there’s no reason for taxpayers to foot the bill for a second one.”
According to CTF estimates, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will receive a total of $8.4 million in retirement through two government pensions. His MP pension alone will start at $141,000 per year when he turns 55, amounting to roughly $6.5 million if he lives to 90.
In addition, Trudeau will collect a second pension specifically for serving as prime minister.
The government states that any prime minister who holds office for at least four years qualifies for this additional retirement allowance.
Trudeau’s payments will begin at $73,000 per year at age 67, totaling around $1.9 million by age 90.
With both pensions combined, Trudeau’s estimated lifetime payout reaches $8.4 million. His current annual salary is $406,200.
Reforms introduced in 2012 reduced pension benefits, raised the retirement age, and increased MPs’ contributions to their own pensions. Before these changes, MPs contributed just $1 for every $24 spent by taxpayers and federal funds.
Former prime minister Stephen Harper forfeited between $1 million and $2 million in potential pension payouts by implementing these reforms. Despite that, the CTF estimates Harper’s total lifetime pension will still amount to approximately $7 million.
“Prime ministers already collect millions through their first pension. They shouldn’t be billing taxpayers for a second one,” said Terrazzano. “Canadians need to see leadership at the top, and all party leaders should commit to ending this extra pension for future prime ministers.”
