According to a March 3 report from WJLA-TV, Cox faces 12 counts in Arlington County, Virginia, of being a sex offender in proximity to children, three counts of a sex offender entering a school or child day care center, four counts of indecent exposure, two counts of taking indecent liberties with children, and one count of identity theft. His next hearing is on May 23, 2025.

Cox’s public defender wanted the hearing closed, WJLA reported. The judge asked the Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney whether they had an opinion on this and they didn’t. The judge asked why the public defender wanted the hearing closed. After that, the motion was withdrawn.

One might have asked why the Arlington County attorney didn’t have an opinion on the matter. Then again, prosecutors in Northern Virginia have plenty of blame to share for the fact that Cox was still out on the street — particularly since, in neighboring Fairfax County, the top prosecutor refused to go after the registered sex offender after he allegedly committed indecent exposure in a Planet Fitness women’s restroom. OTTAWA — Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. says Prime Minister Mark Carney is looking to set up a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump “as soon as possible.”

In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Ambassador Kirsten Hillman said the Canadian side has reached out to the U.S. since Carney was sworn in as prime minister on Friday and was “looking forward” to connecting with Trump.

She says Carney is seeking to “forge a good and solid relationship” with the president and that he “respects” what Trump is trying to do when it comes to enhancing the U.S. economy, but noted the prime minister wants to do the same for Canada.

Hillman sidestepped a question on whether she believes there is anything Canada can do to avoid the reciprocal tariffs Trump is set to impose on other countries, noting a meeting with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick last week made clear that Canada will be affected starting April 2.

Carney was set to depart for his first foreign trip today, visiting France and the U.K., where he is expected to talk about security and economic and trade ties, before an additional stop in Iqaluit, Nvt., to reaffirm Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.

Carney has said he does not yet plan to visit the U.S. but looks forward to speaking with Trump at the appropriate moment.

Fentanyl seized in Saskatoon as overdose crisis continues

Three individuals, including a youth, have been charged following a drug trafficking investigation by the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS).

Officers from the SPS Drug Unit executed a search warrant on March 6 in the 1400 block of Embassy Dr.

During the search, police seized 27.7 grams of brown and red fentanyl, a colour similar to the bad batch linked to a recent overdose crisis.

SPS also confiscated 70.13 grams of methamphetamine, 19.07 grams of cocaine, 28 pregabalin pills, two dilaudid pills, ammunition, and evidence consistent with drug trafficking.

Police have charged Damion Binning, 33, Jamie McKay, 39, and a youth who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Continue…

The success of Alberta’s efforts to secure Japanese buyers for the massive LNG Canada project at Kitimat became clearer on Monday after the US announced it was still trying to woo reticient Japanese and Korean buyers for a proposed terminal in Alaska, despite the threat of punishing trade tariffs.

While Alaska officials scramble to court Japanese investors for their USD$44-billion LNG project, Alberta has already sealed a major energy agreement with Japan — exposing a stark contrast in North American energy diplomacy.

That’s because US president Donald Trump is using the threat of tariffs as a big stick to bludgeon Asian ‘allies’ to buying American gas.

But Alberta Premier Danielle Smith beat him to the punch at the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston last week — using charm and a strong business case for Alberta gas as her secret weapon.

Smith and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) CEO Ichiro Takahara signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the conference, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to Alberta’s oil, natural gas, hydrogen and ammonia industries.

“JOGMEC has been one of our province’s most significant and long-standing partners in Asia,” Smith said, highlighting that Alberta is actively attracting foreign investment while Ottawa drags its feet on LNG development. Continue…

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has announced that, if elected, he will repeal the entire carbon tax, including that which targeted industry.

His plan contrasts with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s move to end only the consumer carbon tax on March 14, leaving existing charges on steel, aluminum, natural gas, food production, concrete, and other sectors in place.

During a press conference on Monday, Poilievre explained that, if elected, his government would "repeal the entire carbon tax, including the federal backstop that requires provinces impose industrial taxes."

A growing coalition of rural Alberta residents is mobilizing against the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) over its approval of a controversial solar farm.

The Rural Alberta Concerned Communities Group (RACCG), representing nearly 200 residents, has announced a public meeting at the Caroline Community Hall on Tuesday to rally opposition and strategize further action.

On Friday, it fired off a letter to the AUC “respectfully” asking it to reconsider its February 28 approval for the project.

But now the movement is now expanding beyond Caroline, with residents of Hanna, Alberta — and another site for a proposed solar farm — joining the fight, turning what began as a local dispute into a bonafide grassroots protest. Continue…

Canada’s proposed retaliatory tariffs against the United States could deliver a harsh blow to the nation’s grain producers by driving up the cost of an essential crop nutrient, according to the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC).

GGC Executive Director Kyle Larkin said his organization has closely examined the federal government’s list of potential US counter tariff targets.

Fertilizer sits at the top of that list, especially phosphate fertilizer, which has no domestic production in Canada.

“There is no domestic phosphate production here, so we rely on imports, and the United States is our major supplier,” said Larkin.

“A 25% tariff on phosphate fertilizer definitely would have an impact on grain farmers.” Continue…

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) has recently announced their plans to launch a central bank digital currency system, set to release roughly a year from now.

SWIFT is the largest international banking network that facilitates transactions and interbank lending between nations. It connects over 11,500 banks and institutions in more than 200 countries and manages trillions of dollars’ worth of transactions per day.

In more recent years, it has been used as a cudgel to sanction countries such as Russia, prohibiting a number of Russian entities from transferring and receiving money through the network.

In a press release published on March 25th, SWIFT said that they worked with “38 global institutions on the second phase of sandbox testing” on their CBDC system, claiming this is “one of the largest known CBDC experiments to date.”

SWIFT claims their “experiments found that our interlinking solution has the potential to simplify and speed up trade flows, unlock growth in tokenized securities markets, and enable efficient FX settlement. And this, all while allowing financial institutions to make use of their existing infrastructure.”

In conclusion, SWIFT says “we plan to extend our solution to support a wider range of emerging digital networks, in addition to CBDCs, such as platforms for tokenized deposits.”

The political West and Russia have fully returned to the (First) Cold War-style strategic competition in various regions of the world. This includes Eastern Europe (particularly Ukraine), the Middle East, Africa, the Asia-Pacific (where Russia is working closely with allies such as China and North Korea), etc. However, there’s another major region that’s becoming increasingly important and contested – the Arctic.

As European (and global) security architecture continues to evolve, particularly as the multipolar world is growing and expanding, the remnants of the unipolar system are determined to at least slow down this process. Although it’s on the verge of a strategic defeat in Ukraine, NATO is still very interested in projecting power in the North, particularly now that Moscow’s resurgence to superpower status has made the Arctic more important than in previous decades.

The region was always critically important in terms of military advantages it offers to both sides. However, it has now also become much more economically viable, particularly when it comes to the Northern Sea Route (NSR), which significantly reduces the time ships from Asia need to reach Europe (various sources claim it’s approximately two weeks faster). In addition, this inhospitable region’s endless natural resources make it extremely sought after, especially when it comes to oil and natural gas.

As Russia is the largest and most important power in the Arctic, it has deployed the most capable military force there, strengthening its already impressive deterrence capabilities. On the other hand, NATO is frustrated it cannot match that, so it’s now organizing its members into a “unified fighting force” (includes Norway, Canada, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the US).
