The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reported at least six years of steady decline in reading and math scores on domestic standardized tests leading up to the 2024 results.

Sixty-nine percent of fourth graders scored below grade level in reading last year, and the rate was 70 percent for eighth-grade students.

NAEP’s 2024 math results were equally disappointing: 60 percent of fourth-grade students and 72 percent of eighth graders scored below their respective grade levels.

Martin West, vice chair of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees NAEP, said student skills have eroded for more than a decade.

He attributed the downward spiral to two significant events: a softening of public school accountability and a new era of “screen-based childhood,” in which students spend far more time on smartphones and social media than on schoolwork.

“‘Sobering’ would be a good word for it,” West said during a February panel discussion with the National Conference of State Legislatures.

A federal jury, after a three-day trial presided over by District Judge Thomas O. Rice, on Wednesday found Indian national Jaskaran Singh, 31, guilty on possession with intent to distribute charges.

Singh faces a maximum prison sentence of twenty years and potential deportation. Sentencing will be set on June 25.

“Mr. Singh trafficked more than 170 pounds of illegal drugs across our northern border into the United States,” stated Acting United States Attorney Richard Barker.

The seizure was an historic one for the Eastern Washington region, worth more than $7.8 million, he said.

“[Border agents] intercepted this poison before it could harm communities in Eastern Washington,” said Barker.

Calgary man arrested after 108 kg of cocaine seized at Alberta border

A Calgary man has been arrested after border officers seized 108 kg of cocaine from a commercial transport vehicle at the Coutts port of entry in southern Alberta.

On March 8, 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered the drugs hidden inside a vehicle during a secondary inspection.

The drugs could be worth as much as $5.5 million.

The shipment originated in the United States. Following the seizure, the Integrated Border Enforcement Team — comprised of the RCMP, CBSA, and Calgary Police Service — launched a criminal investigation.

Arshdeep Singh, 26, of Calgary, was arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Lethbridge on May 7.

Officials emphasized the importance of cooperation in preventing illegal drugs from entering Canada.

“This significant seizure demonstrates the important work being done by our border services officers,” said Ben Tame, a CBSA district director.

RCMP Supt. Sean Boser credited agency collaboration for intercepting the cocaine before it could reach Alberta communities.
