LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan may be known for its Great Lakes, but it’s also home to plenty of secrets. And if Michiganders want to uncover what their government and school systems are keeping under wraps, they have to file a FOIA request.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is supposed to be a shining beacon of governmental accountability, but lately, it’s looking more like a toll booth with a broken meter. School districts and government bodies across the state are slapping astronomical fees on FOIA requests, ensuring that the only thing citizens get is a lighter wallet and a lesson in futility.

Take Rochester Community Schools, where transparency comes with a price tag that’d make a luxury car blush. At the end of last year, we reported on Elizabeth Clair, a Detroit mom, had dared to ask for public access to public records about the district’s diversity training and materials. She was quoted a fee of more than $33 million. The fee was so ridiculous that it made international news.

Clair isn’t the first one to get a big bill from that school district though. Before her, it was mom Jessica Opfer, who was informed that she’d need to pay over $25 million for her FOIA request for records about the removal of a language arts curriculum.

Then there’s St. Charles, Michigan. Journalist Dave Bondy reports that this school district is charging over $60K for FOIA records regarding school fundraising expenses. That’s a bargain compared to Rochester Schools – but still something the average parent or taxpayer can’t afford.

The district is justifying the cost they quoted to two parents by claiming it’s the result of extensive work at $32 per hour. But let’s do the math: that’s nearly 1,900 hours of labor if no copy charges are incurred – more than an entire year of full-time work. Either they’re hiring a slow-motion scribe, or someone really doesn’t want these numbers seeing the light of day.

Meanwhile, the alleged missing football fundraising money they want to find out about – once safely in the school’s coffers – has mysteriously vanished, much like the school’s willingness to answer questions.

Weeks after an Indiana woman filed a lawsuit against notorious ‘pastor’ John-Paul Miller, accusing him of raping her when she was 15 years old and then sexually assaulting her again just a few short years ago, another woman has come forward with her own lawsuit, alleging she was sexually abused by him when she was 14.

The story of John-Paul Miller and his wife, Mica Miller, went viral after we shared a video showing him announcing her death in a strange way following the church service, two weeks after she filed for divorce. At the time, John-Paul preached an entire sermon and then, at the very end, sprung it on the congregation that his wife died last night by killing herself and then told the congregation not to talk about it.

This led to worldwide speculation that he may have been involved in ‘unliving’ her, but a police investigation concluded that she acted alone. However, troubling details of their relationship came to light following her death, including him posting nude pictures of her on a Facebook group and stalking and threatening her, prompting the belief that he took advantage of her frail mental health and drove her to suicide.

Similar to the first lawsuit, the new plaintiff, who filed under the pseudonym Jane Doe #2, has also named John-Paul Miller’s father, Reginald Wayne Miller, Solid Rock Ministries, and their former churches where he pastored before they changed their names and associations, including All Nations Cathedral Church, The Cathedral Baptist Church of the Grand Strand, and Cathedral Hall Academy as defendants.

Doe says she was enrolled in Cathedral Hall Academy, a private Christian school in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that was run by Pastor Wayne Miller and his son, John-Paul Miller, when the “nightmare occurred.”

Masood Farivar, a senior analyst at the government-funded Voice of America (VOA) news organization, has become the subject of public scrutiny after Frontpage Magazine exposed his history as a jihadist and noted his frequent use of public funds to attack President Donald Trump and his MAGA agenda.

“…[o]ver the last eight years, Farivar had a new enemy, cranking out dozens of articles for the VOA with titles like, ‘Can Trump Be Indicted for Obstruction of Justice?’, ‘Has Trump Done Enough to Fence Off His Business Interests?’ and ‘Hush Money Troubles for Trump?’,” writes Daniel Greenfield.

He adds: “When a Muslim terrorist drove a truck into a French crowd on Bastille Day, killing 86 and wounding over 400, Farivar responded with an article titled, ‘‘Learn to Live With Terrorism’ Strikes Some as Good Advice’.”

USAID – FROM TERRORIST TO JOURNALIST.

Farivar was part of jihadist factions that were associated with Taliban leadership and collaborated with Al Qaeda, according to his own book, Confessions of a Mullah Warrior, published in 2009.

His trajectory is rooted in training delivered through a USAID-funded initiative intended to pivot jihadis into journalism. This program, however, has led to instances where former jihadists became involved in media settings.

“USAID provided funding to set up a Mujahadeen propaganda network known as the Afghan Media Resource Center. The terror media network, which reportedly required all personnel to ‘sacrifice for holy jihad’, operated under the auspices of the United States Information Agency (USIA): the parent organization of Voice of America,” writes Frontpage Mag.

Farivar’s memoir details his engagement with radical figures, including Osama bin Laden’s mentor, Yunus Khalis.

The government of the District of Columbia has removed a webpage that touted Washington, D.C. as a “sanctuary city.”

According to Axios, an FAQ page on immigration rights, discrimination and school access is gone.

The move comes as the Democrat mayor has softened her tone since the 2024 election. Last month, for instance, she told the press she doesn’t use the term “sanctuary city” anymore because it’s “misleading.”

"It's misleading to suggest to anyone that if you're violating immigration laws, that this is a place where you can violate immigration laws," she said. "You are vulnerable to federal immigration enforcement."
