OH CANADA! Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off the electricity for 1.5 million Americans despite long term contracts guaranteeing delivery. Ford doesn't realize that cutting the US off would cost Ontario $38 billion a year, raise Canadian electric rates 30%, and result in grid instability throughout Canada. Canada's power generation and grid facilities were overbuilt to service US customers - without US customers the system isn't affordable or reliable.

Premier Doug Ford’s threat to turn off all power to the US would likely cost Ontario around $38 billion a year. It would also mean that Canadians would pay about 30% more for power as they would have to cover fixed generation costs. Additionally, Canada could no longer balance its grid resulting in possible blackouts.
