4CHAN LIKELY TO BE BANNED IN THE UK NEXT WEEK
We have 1 week until the Online Safety Act comes into force on the 17th March.
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety/illegal-and-harmful-content/time-for-tech-firms-to-act-uk-online-safety-regulation-comes-into-force/
>Subject to our codes completing the Parliamentary process by this date, from 17 March 2025, sites and apps will then need to start implementing safety measures to mitigate those risks, and our codes set out measures they can take
>We have the power to fine companies up to 18m or 10 percent of their qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater, and in very serious cases we can apply for a court order to block a site in the UK.
The Online Safety Act makes all online platforms legally responsible for illegal or "harmful" content they host. It applies to any online platform in which users interact with other users. It also mandates strict age verification requirements for any website hosting adult content.
As 4chan has no way of following the guidelines of the Online Safety Act (there is too much "harmful" content hosted here, and no ways of age verifying users without breaking anonymity), we can expect one of two things to happen shortly after the 17th March:
-
4chan willingly blocks access from all UK IPs to avoid legal repercussions from the British state.
OR
-
Ofcom slap 4chan with hefty fines as a result of violating the new laws, and promptly begin legal proceedings to block the website across the entire UK.
This could be the last month (or even last week) in which UK Anons are able to post on 4chan at all. This is truly the end of an era.
