What disease affects 1/3 of the world population?

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. It is the leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States. The parasite occurs worldwide and can last for long periods of time (up to a lifetime) in human bodies (and other animals).

What effects on human behavior are well known but go unmentioned too often?

Toxoplasmosis in humans has been linked to potential behavioral changes, including increased risk-taking, impulsivity, aggression, and even personality shifts, with some studies associating it with a higher likelihood of developing psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, particularly in individuals with latent infections; however, the exact mechanisms and the extent of these behavioral effects are still being researched and not everyone infected with Toxoplasma will experience noticeable behavioral changes.
