Hacktivists protest Musk and Trump by shutting down X for tens of thousands 1/2

Last updated: 11 March 2025

The self-proclaimed hacktivist group Dark Storm on Monday is claiming responsibility for an ongoing outage impacting X to protest the social media platform’s owner Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump.

Using the hashtag #takedowntwitter (the site’s former name before Musk bought the platform in October 2022), a Bluesky user who goes by the name ‘Puck Arks’ posted that a pro-Palestinian hacker group known as the Dark Storm Team has laid claim to Monday morning's interruptions.

“#DarkStorm has confirmed that the DDOS attack against Twitter will continue throughout the day as a protest against Musk and Trump,” they posted, stating the attacks are expected to last for at least another four hours.

Musk’s platform has been experiencing intermittent outages worldwide since about 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time, impacting roughly 40,000 users in the US at its 10:00 a.m. peak, and about 10,800 X users in the UK.

“Due to Elon Musks and Donald Trumps blatant fascism and lack of humanity we as a digital army for the people will continue our peaceful DDOS protests against X formerly known as Twitter. Thank you for your love and support," Puck Arks in said his third post addressing the disruptions.

Musk commenting on the outage said his platform was in the process of tracing the origin of the attacks, while, as typical, getting support and vitriol from users on both sides of the aisle.

"There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against x. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved," Musk said.

The alleged distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, which flood a target’s servers with thousands of traffic requests (often using automated bots), come after a weekend of live protests hit Tesla dealerships across the US decrying Musk and his latest DOGE policies.

Thousands of protestors (such as the woman pictured above) have been seen storming showrooms, graffitiing property, and in some cases, burning down Tesla charging stations, throwing Molotov cocktails, and firing gun shots. The, at times, violent crowds have led police in cities such as Chicago and Boston, and in Oregon state, to barricade dealerships and arrest agitators to protect the facilities and their employees.

Musk on his social media platform this weekend, blamed billionaires George Soros and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman of bankrolling the "Tesla Takedown" protests through their ActBlue organization, citing an unnamed investigation. Reid has denied any involvement, calling the accusations on X "Just one more of Elon's false claims about me."

'DDoS attack tactics have evolved dramatically'

David Mound, Senior Penetration Tester at SecurityScorecard, says that DDoS attack tactics have evolved dramatically over recent years with adversaries "leveraging increasingly sophisticated techniques to bypass traditional defenses."

Internet monitoring site Downdetector.com showed the numbers of X users impacted by the outage dropping to less than a thousand just before 11:00 a.m. However, it appears the rolling disruptions spiked again Monday afternoon, affecting about 35,000 users just after 1:00 p.m.

Around 60% of X users in the US reported issues with the app, 31% reported problems with the X website, and another 11% reported server connection issues, Downdetector said.

Mound explained that traditional DDoS attacks have shifted from “pure volumetric to application-layer (L7) floods, adaptive bot-driven traffic, and targeted API abuse” which can make mitigation that much more challenging.

“Attackers now distribute traffic across entire subnets (carpet bombing) and exploit high-amplification vectors like Memcached, DNS, and TCP reflection to overwhelm networks,” Mound said, adding that “large-scale botnets, often powered by IoT malware variants, enable Tbps-scale attacks, with some exceeding 10 Tbps, putting even well-protected organizations at risk.”

Who is Dark Storm?

According to a cyber risk intelligence report by SecurityScorecard from 2023, Dark Storm has been busy claiming attacks “on targets both inside Israel and out” since the war in Gaza, focusing on taking down Israeli infrastructure and boasting about its attacks on a Telegram channel it created in August 2023.

The Persian-speaking group has not only targeted the Israeli government, local municipalities, and sensitive industries, but is also known for claiming distributed denial-of-service attacks on John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and Los Angeles Airport (LAX), as well as Snapchat.

Dark Storm appears to follow a hacktivist playbook similar to the Killnet gang, which spent most of 2023 carrying out DDoS attacks against victims who supported Ukraine until it decided to commercialize its operations in favor of a DDoS hackers-for-hire model.

SecurityScorecard researchers say Dark Storm shows “commercial motivations in addition to political ones,” and like Killnet, has begun advertising itself as a “cybercrime-as-a-service,” complete with a menu of hacking services.

“For much of its history, it [Dark Storm] has targeted NATO member states and others that have declared their support for Ukraine,” suggesting Russian geopolitical interests, the researchers said.

It’s not clear the direct connection between Bluesky user Puck Arks and the Dark Storm Team except for their mutual support of hacktivist activities and other like-minded groups, such as Anonymous, and the dislike of US policies.

Beyond technique evolution, the research shows that DDoS motivations are shifting, Mound said. "Hacktivism has resurged, with groups like Killnet and Anonymous Sudan launching politically motivated disruptions against governments, financial institutions, and infrastructure providers," he said.

Mound further noted that ransom DDoS attacks, or RDDoS campaigns, have also become more prevalent among threat actors trying to profit financially from their criminal endeavors. In RDDoS attacks, the hacktivists will demand a ransom payment and threaten the victim with prolonged downtime if they don't pay up.

"Nation-state actors have also begun using DDoS as part of broader cyber influence and disruption campaigns, particularly in geopolitical conflicts,” Mound said. "With attackers continually refining their techniques, a proactive, adaptive security posture is essential to withstand modern DDoS threats," he added.

Trump Hits Canada With 50 Percent Steel and Aluminum Tariffs, Warns of More to Come

John Carney11 Mar 2025

President Donald Trump is ratcheting up pressure on Canada, announcing late Monday that he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 percent, citing Ontario’s move to levy a tax on U.S. electricity exports.

“This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post, emphasizing the urgency of the measure. The hike comes just hours before an already-planned 25 percent tariff was set to take effect at midnight, marking yet another sharp shift in U.S.-Canada trade relations under Trump’s second term.

The president’s move underscores his determination to confront what he sees as Canada’s unfair trade policies, particularly its long-standing protectionist measures on key industries.

Trump further warned that if Canada does not roll back tariffs on dairy products and other U.S. agricultural products, ==he will impose even broader restrictions on Canadian exports starting April 2.

“Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous==,” Trump said.

The White House is also preparing to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles and auto parts, a move that could deliver a serious blow to Canada’s manufacturing sector. In February, Trump delayed a round of tariffs on Canadian goods, and last week, he announced a one-month extension for most imports, including auto parts, after consultations with U.S. automakers.

“If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA!” Trump said.

Trump also argued that the U.S. has been subsidizing Canadian national security.

The tariff escalation underscores Trump’s long-standing view that Canada has benefited disproportionately from trade with the U.S. while shielding key industries behind protectionist policies. Ontario’s new electricity levy, which the Trump administration has framed as an unjustified attack on U.S. consumers, was the immediate catalyst for the latest tariff hike.

The Ontario electricity levy has become a flashpoint, with Trump officials portraying it as an attack on U.S. consumers—one that exposes the risks of relying on Canada for key resources.

For years, critics of Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs have argued that Canada is a reliable supplier and that restricting its metals exports would create unnecessary economic disruptions. But Ontario’s willingness to raise electricity prices on U.S. states and threaten energy exports has, in Trump’s view, undermined that argument. It is now clear that Canada is willing to use its productive capacity to influence U.S. policy, something that it could do in reaction to policies—from tax rates, to abortion, to foreign relations—unrelated to trade.

If Canada is willing to restrict energy exports, what’s stopping it from weaponizing other industries? The Trump administration is making the case that Washington cannot afford to gamble its economic and strategic security on the goodwill of Ottawa,” a Trump official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.

Rashida Tlaib Casts Lone Vote Against Bill Requiring Reports on Cartel Smuggling Tunnels Under Border

Bob Price11 Mar 2025

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) cast the only no vote on a bill requiring an annual report to Congress on cross-border cartel smuggling tunnels. The bill, H.R. 495, passed the House Monday on a vote of 402-1.

“I thought for sure everyone was gonna vote yes on my bill this evening,” Rep. EliCrane (R-AZ) posted on X following the vote. “402-1 is still pretty solid though.”

On Monday, the House of Representatives voted to pass the Subterranean Border Defense Act (H.R. 495). The bill simply requires an annual report to Congress from U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the activities of cartels creating tunnels for drug and human smuggling and actions taken by the U.S. to stop them.

“Since 1990, officials have discovered more than 140 tunnels that have breached the border, with an 80% increase in tunnel activity since 2008,” Crane said on the House floor. “As transnational criminal organizations continue to grow in both size and sophistication, illicit cross-border tunnels along the southwest border of the United States represent a significant and growing threat to national security.”

Democrat co-sponsor Lou Correra (C-CA) also spoke on the bill, saying, “I believe this bill is an important step in the right direction.”

No one spoke against the bill. In a rare bipartisan moment, 194 Democrats joined 208 Republicans in voting for the bill. The undervote came as ten Republicans and 19 Democrats abstained from voting. Tlaib cast the only “Nay.”

The following members are listed as co-sponsors of the bill:

Rep. Correa, J. Luis [D-CA-46]

Rep. Biggs, Andy [R-AZ-5]

Rep. Gosar, Paul A. [R-AZ-9]

Rep. Higgins, Clay [R-LA-3]

Rep. Luttrell, Morgan [R-TX-8]

Rep. Ogles, Andrew [R-TN-5]

Rep. Guest, Michael [R-MS-3]

Rep. Gillen, Laura [D-NY-4]

The bill moves on to the Senate for consideration.

Migrants over 70 Per Cent More Likely to Commit Sex Crimes Than Legacy Britons

Kurt Zindulka11 Mar 2025

British government data has revealed that foreigners commit sexual crimes at over a 70 per cent higher rate than the settled populations of England and Wales.

While the government continues to refuse to provide detailed information on the ethnic and migration background of criminals, figures released under Freedom of Information requests by the Centre for Migration Control have shown that certain groups of foreigners are far more likely to commit sex crimes and that migrants overall are far more likely than native Britons to be convicted of such offences.

According to the data revealed in The Telegraph newspaper, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of all sexual offences, including rape, between 2021 and 2023 in Britain were committed by migrants or by offenders with an “unknown” nationality. This comes despite migrants making up around 9.3 per cent of the population.

Analysis of the figures from the Centre for Migration Control found that the prevalence of sexual offenders varied wildly among different groups of people, with North Africans being 6.6 times more likely than Britons to be convicted of sex crimes, followed by Middle Easterners at 3.8 times higher of a rate, and Sub-Saharan Africans at 2.6 times the rate.

The think tank found that there were 87 foreign ethnic groups in the country with a higher rate of sex crime convictions than the native British population. In total, foreigners were 71 per cent more likely than Britons to be convicted of a sex crime.

The government figures found that people from Afghanistan and the African nation of Eritrea were more than 20 times more likely to commit a sex offence than the native population.

Migrants were also found to be vastly overrepresented in crime overall, with over 100,000 migrants being convicted of a serious crime in Britain between 2021 and 2023. The think tank said that there were 66 different nationalities with higher crime rates than the native-born public.

Albanians, with a conviction rate of 4,028 per 10,000 of their census population in England and Wales, were by far the most likely to be convicted of a crime, and over 30 times higher than the 136 per 10,000 rate for native Britons. Albanians were followed by migrants from Moldova, the Congo, Namibia, and Somalia in terms of conviction rate.

The research director at the Centre for Migration Control, Rob Bates, noted that not all immigration is the same, with certain countries producing far fewer migrant criminals. For example, migrants from former British Dominions such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand all having a lower conviction rate of those born in Britain.

“There is vast variation in the economic contribution of different nationalities coming to the UK, and it is the same when it comes to the issue of criminality. But we now have an immigration system that processes a would-be migrant from, say, Afghanistan, in the same way as one from New Zealand, Canada or Australia,” Bates said.

“We have been forced to endure thousands of socially destructive crimes for rape, violence, robbery, fraud, and drug offences that would simply not have blighted our communities were it not for mass migration,” he added.

“The elephant in the room cannot be ignored any longer. Our streets are objectively less safe. People now report petty crime to their followers on social media rather than to the police, drug gangs operated with impunity, and you are probably more likely to see a weapon on the streets of London than you are a police officer.”

The vast disparity in outcomes for migrants from different countries has led some to suggest that the government curtail immigration from countries with a high percentage of offenders and prioritise immigration from countries with low levels of criminality. Others have called for the Home Office to publish annual figures on migrant criminality to allow the British public to understand the connection between crime and mass migration policies.

NATO member accuses Ukraine of threatening its sovereignty

Hungary has criticized Kiev for targeting critical energy infrastructure after a recent drone strike on the Druzhba oil pipeline

Hungary has accused Ukraine of threatening its sovereignty after Kiev launched a drone strike on the Druzhba oil pipeline on Tuesday. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said shipments of Russian crude via the pipeline have been temporarily halted following the attack on a metering station.

In a video posted on Facebook, Szijjarto stressed that the Druzhba pipeline is a critical component of Hungary’s energy infrastructure, pointing out that if it ceases to function, oil deliveries to Hungary and Slovakia would be “physically impossible.”

“We consider these attacks against our energy infrastructure targeting Hungary to be unacceptable,” the foreign minister said. “Hungary’s energy supply is a matter of sovereignty and we expect everyone to respect this,” he added.

Szijjarto noted that he had spoken to Russia’s deputy energy minister, who has assured him that crude oil deliveries will likely be resumed within the next 24 hours.

The diplomat recalled that Budapest had repeatedly raised the issue of the safety of its energy infrastructure multiple times in Brussels, and had been given assurances by the European Commission that there would be no attacks on such facilities. “Unfortunately, this is already the umpteenth time when the EC’s guarantee is violated,” Szijjarto pointed out.

According to media reports, three Ukrainian fixed-wing drones attacked the Druzhba terminal in Bryansk Region on Tuesday night. No injuries were reported. The attack was part of a larger raid on Russia, which reportedly involved more than 340 UAVs, nearly a hundred of which were brought down near Moscow. The falling debris from the destroyed drones near the capital reportedly caused the death of at least three people, while over 20 civilians have been injured.
