Australia to Receive No Exemption from 25 Percent Steel, Aluminium Tariffs
The decision means approximately $1 billion worth of Australian steel and aluminium exports to the US will now be subject to the full 25 percent tariff.
The verdict is in.
Australia will not be granted an exemption from the 25 percent tariffs on aluminium and steel imports imposed by the United States, the White House has confirmed.
Despite former U.S. President Donald Trump saying his administration would seriously consider excluding Australia from the levies, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt revealed no exemption would be made.
“He considered it, and considered against it. There will be no exemptions,” she told the ABC.
Pressed on the reasoning, Leavitt responded, “America First steel.”
She added, “If they want to be exempted, they should consider moving steel manufacturing here.”
The decision means approximately $1 billion worth of Australian steel and aluminium exports to the United States will now be subject to the full 25 percent tariff.
According to United Nations COMTRADE data, Australian iron and steel exports to the United States are valued at approximately $378 million (US$237 million), while aluminium exports are worth around $503 million.
However, that still amounts to only 1 percent of steel imports, and 2 percent of aluminium.
Further, Australia’s largest steel manufacturer, BlueScope, largely circumvented the last set of tariffs during the first Trump administration by investing in production facilities in the United States.
Australia is the world’s sixth-largest aluminium producer. …

Voting ends in Greenland election dominated by Trump's control pledge
NUUK, Greenland, March 11 (Reuters) - Polling stations closed in Greenland on Tuesday in a parliamentary election brought into the international spotlight by U.S. President Donald Trump's pledge to take control of the mineral-rich island, firing up a debate over its independence.
Voting had been extended by half an hour past a 2200 GMT deadline amid high turnout at several of the 72 polling stations across the Arctic island, where 40,500 people were eligible to cast their ballot.
There were no exit polls, and a final tally of the vote could take between three and five hours to complete, Greenland's election authority has said.
Since taking office in January, Trump has vowed to make Greenland - a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark - part of the United States, saying it is vital to U.S. security interests.
The vast island, with a population of just 57,000, has been caught up in a geopolitical race for dominance in the Arctic, where melting ice caps are making its resources more accessible and opening new shipping routes. Both Russia and China have intensified military activity in the region.
Greenland is a former Danish colony and a territory since 1953. It gained some autonomy in 1979 when its first parliament was formed, but Copenhagen still controls foreign affairs, defence and monetary policy and provides just under $1 billion a year to the economy.
In 2009, it won the right to declare full independence through a referendum, even though it has not done so out of concern living standards would drop without Denmark's economic support.
"I strongly believe that we will very soon start to live a life more based on who we are, based on our culture, based on our own language, and start to make regulations based on us, not based on Denmark," said Qupanuk Olsen, candidate for the main pro-independence party Naleraq.
Inge Olsvig Brandt, a candidate for the ruling Inuit Ataqatigiit party, said:
"We don't need the independence right now. We have too many things to work on. I think we have to work with ourselves, our history, and we are going to have a lot of healing work with us before we can take the next step."

INVESTMENT PLEDGES
Trump initially declined to rule out military force, alarming many Greenlanders, although he later softened his stance, stating he would respect the will of the local people and was "ready to invest billions of dollars" if they joined the U.S.
Greenland's prime minister, Mute Egede, has stressed the island is not for sale and advocated for a broad coalition government to resist external pressure. In an interview aired on Monday by Danish broadcaster DR, he dismissed Trump's offer as disrespectful, expressing willingness to cooperate with other countries instead.
Denmark's prime minister has said Greenland is not for sale, but made it clear that it is up to the local people to decide their future.
All six main political parties support independence but differ on how and when it could be achieved.
The pro-independence Naleraq party, the leading opposition force, has gained momentum ahead of the election, bolstered by U.S. interest and fresh accusations of Denmark's historic exploitation of Greenland's mineral wealth.
The party believes the U.S. attention strengthens Greenland's position in secession talks with Denmark and aims to bring a deal with Copenhagen to a vote before the next election in four years.

U.S. Department of Education Initiates Reduction in Force
As part of the Department of Education’s final mission, the Department today initiated a reduction in force (RIF) impacting nearly 50% of the Department’s workforce. Impacted Department staff will be placed on administrative leave beginning Friday, March 21st.
“Today’s reduction in force reflects the Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “I appreciate the work of the dedicated public servants and their contributions to the Department. This is a significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system.”
The Department of Education will continue to deliver on all statutory programs that fall under the agency’s purview, including formula funding, student loans, Pell Grants, funding for special needs students, and competitive grantmaking.
All divisions within the Department are impacted by the reduction, with some divisions requiring significant reorganization to better serve students, parents, educators, and taxpayers.
Background
When President Trump was inaugurated, the Department’s workforce stood at 4,133 workers. After today’s actions, the Department’s workforce will total roughly 2,183 workers. Included in the reduction in force are nearly 600 employees who accepted voluntary resignation opportunities and retirement over the last seven weeks, including:
• 259 employees accepted the Deferred Resignation Program
• 313 employees accepted the Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment
Remaining employees impacted by the reduction in force will be placed on administrative leave beginning next Friday, March 21. Pursuant to regulatory requirements and the Department’s collective bargaining agreement, all impacted employees will receive full pay and benefits until June 9th, as well as substantial severance pay or retirement benefits based upon their length of service.

J.D. Vance: Unchecked Migration Is Killing The American Dream
For anyone dreaming of home ownership or a nicer place to rent, the speech Vice President J.D. Vance gave on Monday resonated with hope. It also angered a few people.
“I’m hard pressed to think of a time in my 40 years of life where it’s been so hard for normal American citizens to afford a home,” Vance said in Washington, D.C., at the National League of Cities Conference. “Even renting a home has become a challenge, or worse yet, fallen completely out of reach for so many of our families.”
He recounted a conversation with a relative who said that “when her parents were growing up, they could afford a nice home on a single middle-class income,” and that is no longer the case. Today, he said, in most cases it takes two times the combined income of a husband and wife to buy a new house.
“That’s just not acceptable or sustainable in the United States of America. We want Americans to be able to afford the American dream of home ownership, because we know that when people own their homes, it makes them a stakeholder … in their neighborhoods, in their cities, and ultimately, of course, in this country that all of us love so much.”
He offered reasons for the lack of affordable housing, including inflation, stagnant income, “needless regulations,” and local zoning that makes it harder to build new homes.
But after noting issues on the supply side, Vance turned his attention to the demand side.
“One of the drivers of increased housing demand, we know, is that we’ve got a lot of people over the last four years who have come into the country illegally. And that’s something we have to work on if we want to meaningfully reduce the cost of housing too,” Vance noted.
“If you allow 20 million people to compete with American citizens for the cost of homes, you are going to have a large and, frankly, completely preventable spike in the demand for housing. And that is what we, of course, have seen. Because while we’ve made it a little bit hard to build homes in this country over the last four years, we’ve also, unfortunately, made it way too easy for people to compete against American citizens for the precious homes that are in our country to begin with.”
These remarks apparently ruffled the feathers of officials from sanctuary cities in the audience. Someone started yelling in protest to his comments.
“I see one of our nice representatives out here wants to actually, I guess, continue to flood the country with illegal immigrants, making your communities … unaffordable,” Vance said.
The room roared with a mix of groans and applause.
“Ma’am, with all respect, one of the reasons why we’re doing what we’re doing is because we want to make it more affordable for Americans to live,” Vance replied to the heckler, referencing the Trump administration’s border enforcement initiatives. Vance mentioned that he was recently in Eagle Pass, Texas, where local border control said they have gone from “1,500 daily encounters to less than 30. And again, that’s in a matter of weeks. That’s just a simple matter of common sense border enforcement. That matters.”
These comments prompted strong applause.
Further responding to his detractors, Vance stated that the “reason why we care about border security is because we want your communities to be safer. We want them to be more affordable. We want there to be less drugs in our country, and we want your citizens to be able to live the American dream. It is the birthright of every single one of our citizens, and we’re going to fight for it every single day.”
Many attendees stood up, whooped, and applauded, overpowering those who disagreed with President Donald Trump’s immigration reforms.
“You can disagree with some of the laws that are in place,” Vance added. “You can disagree with the enforcement of those laws. You can even vote for people who want to change those laws. But while we have immigration laws on the books, we will enforce them, and we expect our local municipalities to help us,” Vance continued. “It is not up to local cities to choose which federal laws that they’re going to enforce.” …
https://thefederalist.com/2025/03/11/j-d-vance-unchecked-migration-is-killing-the-american-dream/
…
Vance went on to add that many urban and rural blue collar Americans have struggled for decades to “afford a home,” “raise their kids in safe communities,” and “look to the future with hope and optimism.” He concluded by encouraging city officials to work together to restore the American dream for American families.
“So with all respect for policy disagreements, I think that one thing that unites us in this room is that we want to give our blue collar people in the United States of America a shot at the American dream again. We may disagree about how exactly to do it, but let’s do it together, let’s fight for our people together, and let’s reinvigorate the American dream for the American citizen once again.”
