Don't Count On SCOTUS To End Birthright Citizenship, Send It To Congress
Leaving birthright citizenship to the Roberts court is walking into a minefield – legislation is the smarter route to end this unnecessary relic of the 19th century. Here’s why.
If conservatives are counting on the Supreme Court to rule birthright citizenship for illegal aliens unconstitutional, think again – it isn’t the slam dunk many believe it to be. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better path to abolishing this disastrous policy for good.
Some background: President Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order rolling back birthright citizenship for illegal aliens stipulates that natural-born U.S. citizens must have at least one parent who is a citizen or permanent resident.
On Feb. 19, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a nationwide injunction on the order until it hears the case in June. Trump’s lawyers will ultimately have to convince the Supreme Court of his interpretation of the 14th Amendment’s Section 1: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the state wherein they reside.”
Despite much legal analysis to the contrary, originalist conservatives should be wary of turning to the framers of the 14th Amendment or later Supreme Court rulings on this controversial issue.
Instead, Congress needs to immediately back up President Trump’s executive order before it makes its way to the Supreme Court. The justices will be more amenable to legislation, considering Section 5 of the 14th Amendment givesCongress the “power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”

"Shred And Burn All Documents": USAID Staff Ordered To Destroy Evidence On Tuesday
A senior USAID official on Tuesday ordered the agency's remaining staff to report to their now-former headquarters in Washington DC for an "all day" group effort to destroy documents, many of which contain sensitive information, Politico reports.
The materials marked for destruction include "classified safes and personnel documents" at the Ronald Reagan Building, according to an email sent by USAID's acting executive director, Erica Carr.
"Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break," read the email instructing staff to label the burn bags with "SECRET" and "USAID/B/IO" (which stands for "bureau or independent office") in dark sharpie.

UPDATE: Nearly Half of Department of Education Employees Laid Off in Reduction of Force by Secretary Linda McMahon
Secretary of Education Linda McMahon ordered Reduction in Force layoffs targeting roughly half the department’s over 4,000 employees, effective March 21. Those laid off will receive full pay and benefits until June 9th, as well as severance pay or retirement benefits. About 600 of the workers had previously accepted buyout offers.
President Donald Trump campaigned on shutting down the Education Department. Trump recently said he is looking at signing an executive order starting the process, however complete elimination of the department would require Congressional approval.
Earlier Tuesday, the department sent out an email telling employees to take their laptops and vacate their offices by 6 p.m. because the headquarters in Washington, D.C. and regional offices would be shut down for “security “reasons” until Thursday morning when office hours would resume.
McMahon reposted a White House video clip Tuesday evening saying she was fulfilling President Trump’s order to put herself out of a job, “I think @POTUS made it very clear, that he thought that the Department of Education should totally go away — and he said that my successful job will be to put myself OUT of a job. I’m working to fulfill that mandate that he gave to me… but in the meantime, we want to make sure that the programs — everything that is put in place — continues to operate in a more efficient way.”

RFK Jr. Seeks To End Rule Allowing Food Companies To Bypass FDA Ingredient Approval
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on March 10 that it is seeking to terminate a rule allowing food manufacturers to use additives without formal regulatory approval.
The Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) rule allows companies to self-approve the inclusion of additives in food items without requiring a review and the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The rule enables manufacturers to add an ingredient even if the FDA has not determined its safety.
On Monday, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. directed the acting FDA commissioner to explore the possibility of eliminating the “self-affirmed GRAS pathway” available to companies, the department said in a statement.
“This will enhance the FDA’s oversight of ingredients considered to be GRAS and bring transparency to American consumers,” HHS said.
As of now, manufacturers submit notices through the FDA’s GRAS notification program, which is not a mandatory process. The agency assesses 75 such submitted notices on average each year.
By eliminating the self-affirm pathway, companies would be required to publicly notify the FDA before introducing new ingredients to food items. The notification must include details such as underlying safety data and the intended use of the ingredients

The IRIS program: A Reagan-era success under threat

For nearly four decades, IRIS has served as the backbone of the EPA’s regulatory framework, offering independent, nonpartisan evaluations of chemicals’ toxicity. These assessments are used to set limits on pollutants in air, water and soil, ensuring that Americans are not exposed to levels of chemicals that could cause cancer, respiratory diseases, or other health problems.
Now, this vital program is under attack. The No IRIS Act would bar the EPA from using IRIS assessments in any environmental regulations, enforcement actions, or permits. Without these scientific evaluations, the EPA would be flying blind, unable to determine safe exposure levels for hundreds of chemicals.
William Boyd, a professor at UCLA School of Law, put it bluntly: “They’re trying to undermine the foundations for doing any kind of regulation. If you get rid of step one, you’re totally in the dark.”

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has sledged Donald Trump once again despite facing criticism over whether his comments affected Australia's hopes of securing a tariff exemption from the United States.
Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has refused to pull his punches in his assessment of Donald Trump as he delivered another rebuke of the President.
Mr Turnbull has criticised Trump on a number of occasions in recent days, including during interviews with Bloomberg TV, as well as ABC's 7.30 and RN Breakfast.
The ex-Liberal leader served as prime minister during Trump's first term as president before Mr Turnbull was voted out in 2018.
Questions have been asked over whether the timing of Mr Turnbull's comments had been approrpriate as they came amid Australia's attempts to secure an exemption from America's tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.
He defended his "freedom of speech" to make the remarks during his RN Breakfast appearance when he was asked whether he should have self-censored, before continuing to blast Trump in an opinion piece in Nine newspapers on Tuesday.
Mr Turnbull shut down Trump's description of him as a "weak and ineffective" leader, as he recalled his ability to persuade Trump to "honour a refugee deal I had done with President Obama" and to give Australia an exemption from the tariffs in 2018.
He also accused Trump of siding with Russia and Vladimir Putin in the war with Ukraine.
“He has, effectively, changed sides in the war between Russia and Ukraine, cutting off military aid to, and intelligence sharing with, Ukraine. His formula for peacemaking is kneecapping Ukraine to the point that it has to accept Putin’s peace,’’ he wrote.
“A genuinely strong leader would use his power to compel the aggressor, Russia, to yield. Instead, he is punching down on the weaker party."
Mr Turnbull also said the "gaslighting" had to stop and that leaders around the world needed to stand up to the President.
