Russia should launch Oreshnik strike in retaliation for Ukrainian drone attack – senior MP

Moscow should deploy state-of-the-art missiles against targets in Ukraine, senior lawmaker Andrey Kartapolov has said

Moscow should employ its new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system in response to a major Ukrainian drone attack targeting residential areas and civilian infrastructure inside Russia, a top MP has stated.

A total of 337 Ukrainian UAVs were shot down above Russian territory overnight, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Tuesday morning. Russian media described it as the largest drone raid by Kiev since the escalation between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022. In Moscow Region, three civilians were killed and more than a dozen wounded as a result of the attack, according to Governor Andrey Vorobyev.

When asked by journalists on Tuesday if Russia should strike Ukrainian targets with the Oreshnik in retaliation, the head of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee chairman Andrey Kartapolov replied that “the decision is up to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief [Russian President Vladimir Putin].”

“But I think it would be appropriate [to launch the Oreshnik], and it would be even better if it is more than one missile,” added the MP, who is a former deputy defense minister and holds the rank of colonel-general.

The Oreshnik missile, which was developed in secrecy, made its battlefield debut in November 2024 when it struck Ukraine’s Yuzhmash military industrial facility in the city of Dnepr. According to Moscow, the state-of-the-art system was deployed in response to Kiev’s attacks deep inside Russia with Western-supplied long-range weapons.

Putin said that the Oreshnik’s multiple warheads travel at ten times the speed of sound and cannot be intercepted by any existing air defense. Following the successful strike, Russia announced the launch of serial production of Oreshnik missiles.

In a separate interview with RIA Novosti, Kartapolov insisted that the Ukrainian drone raid was a PR stunt by Kiev that “did not pursue any military goals.”

“This is purely a propaganda move aimed at showing the public, primarily the Americans, that they can still do something. But as usual, they can do nothing but wage war on the elderly, children, women and civilians,” he said.

The MP suggested that the UAV attack on Russia could be linked to the negotiations between US and Ukrainian delegations taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Kremlin comments on role of EU nation in potential Ukraine ‘dissolution’

Poland “would be eager” to reclaim former territory, given the chance, spokesman Dmitry Peskov has claimed

Poland would seize the chance to retake territory from Ukraine it once held, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. He was responding to reports that western Ukraine’s Lviv Region – formerly part of Poland but now a nationalist hearland – has been lobbying in the US independently of Kiev.

Earlier this week, Russian media highlighted a recent disclosure from a Washington-based firm acting as a foreign agent for the administration of Lviv Region. TASS characterized Lviv’s lobbying as an effort to pursue policies independent of Kiev, highlighting the border shared with Poland as an advantage.

When asked about the reports during a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Peskov said the issue was a matter for Ukraine to resolve internally. “I don’t view this as an indication of Ukraine’s dissolution,” Peskov responded. He suggested, however, that Warsaw “would be eager” to reclaim territories that were once Polish if given the chance.

The US company Color Nine Group notified the Department of Justice in January about its engagement with Ukrainian officials under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). President Michael Willis stated that the firm aims to find “potential US partner states to establish sister-state relationships” with the Lviv Region, offering its services pro bono. Related promotional materials inaccurately label Lviv Region as a state, the TASS report noted. Ukraine is a unitary nation with limited regional self-governance.

Lviv Region’s status as part of Ukraine originates from a 1951 border agreement between the USSR and Soviet Poland, which settled territorial disputes following World War II. Some Polish nationalist politicians argue that the transfer of lands inhabited by ethnic Ukrainians was unjust.

While the Polish government publicly supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, historical grievances linger over the mass killings of ethnic Poles by Ukrainian militants during World War II, whom modern Ukraine regards as independence fighters and heroes.

Maui police chief named in Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs lawsuit as alleged co-conspirator

In a nearly 90 page civil lawsuit, Maui Police Chief John Pelletier is accused of being hired as security for Combs in 2018 and for co-conspiring a cover-up.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui Police Chief John Pelletier is fiercely denying allegations that he was involved in a cover-up linked to Sean “Diddy” Combs.

In a nearly 90-page civil lawsuit filed by Ashley Parham and two unnamed individuals, Pelletier is accused of being hired as security for Combs in 2018.

The suit claims that Pelletier, who at the time was a Las Vegas police captain, posed as a sheriff deputy in California and responded to an alleged gang rape involving Combs.

The alleged victim claims that Pelletier instructed her to go home and offered no help or medical care.

The woman claims Pelletier gave an envelope to a neighbor, which she believed to be full of cash.

She claims Pelletier later took her and another plaintiff at gunpoint to his home, restrained them, refused to let them call an attorney, and made various moves to cover up the kidnapping.

In a statement, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen requested that the Maui County Police Commission put Pelletier on administrative leave while the investigation remains ongoing.

The statement reads as follows:

“On March 7, 2025, and was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in the case of Ashley Parham v. Sean Combs (Case No. 3:24-cv-07191-RFL).

This amendment includes multiple new defendants, one of whom is Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.

The original complaint, filed on October 15, 2024, did not name Chief Pelletier.

While the allegations in the amended complaint remain unproven, they are serious in nature and involve claims of alleged criminal conduct.

As with any such legal matter, due process must be observed, but the existence of these allegations alone presents concerns regarding public trust and the effective functioning of the department.

There is precedent within the County of Maui government for placing appointed officials on leave while allegations against them are investigated.

This approach does not constitute a presumption of guilt but ensures that the individual in question is not in a position that may compromise the integrity of the office while the matter is under review.

The County of Maui Charter requires appointed officers to uphold the highest ethical standards to maintain public confidence in local government.

Given the gravity of the allegations, I recommend that the Maui Police Commission place Chief Pelletier on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Additionally, I urge the Commission to conduct its own independent review rather than waiting for the resolution of the federal case.

Taking proactive steps will demonstrate the County’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.”

Mayor Richard Bissen

Pelletier released a statement Tuesday morning in response:

“I want to address the recent request by Mayor Bissen to the Maui County Police Commission regarding my position as Chief of Police. Let me be clear: the allegations made against me are completely false, and I have not been formally served with any legal paperwork.

Throughout my career, I have served with integrity and dedication, and I am deeply disappointed by this request, which I believe to be both premature and unjust. I understand the importance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement, and I fully intend to cooperate with any necessary processes to ensure the truth is known.

However, I firmly believe no one should face professional consequences based on unsubstantiated claims. I remain committed to the officers, staff, and residents of this County and sincerely appreciate the support of those who know my character, my dedication to my family, and my lifelong commitment to this profession.

Despite this challenge, my focus remains on serving this community and leading the Maui Police Department with the honor and integrity it deserves.“

Chief John Pelletier

The Maui Police Department released the following statement Monday evening:

“Chief Pelletier has no connections whatsoever to any individuals named in the lawsuit. The allegations suggesting his involvement are entirely unfounded. We are confident that the evidence will demonstrate these claims to be false and will expose those who are deliberately trying to manipulate the legal system to spread misleading narratives.
