It was branded as IVOMEC when Merck first launched it for veterinary use in 1981. By the late 1980s, ivermectin was the bestselling veterinary medicine in the world.

 

For human use, Merck worked with the WHO to discover what benefits it might have in human diseases. Once approved for human use, it was branded MECTIZAN in 1987.

 

It CURES river blindness…a serious disease in some parts of the world. It was called a "wonder drug" and Merck gave it to the world for free to eradicate river blindness and also lymphatic filariasis…which is the main reason the two men who discovered it won the Nobel Prize in 2015.
