Trump Threatens NYC with Federal Funding Cuts Over Crime Wave, Orders Audit.

President Donald J. Trump is pressing New York City’s transit authority to reduce crime levels or face significant federal funding cuts. Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy issued the demand in a letter addressed to the Metro Transportation Authority (MTA) on Tuesday, stating that the federal government intends to “restore order” within the city’s transit system.

“The trend of violent crime, homelessness, and other threats to public safety on one of our nation’s most prominent metro systems is unacceptable. After years of soft-on-crime policies, our Department is stepping in to restore order,” Sec. Duffy wrote. “Commuters are sick and tired of feeling like they have to jeopardize their safety to get to work, go to school, or to travel around the city. We will continue to fight to ensure their federal tax dollars are going towards a crime-free commute.”

The letter demands data on fare evasion, assaults on workers and customers, and police presence from the MTA. Duffy also requested an account of how federal funds are utilized to enhance safety and security==. His message underscored the urgency of compliance to avoid financial consequences, including potential redirection or withdrawal of funding.

In response, MTA’s Chief of Policy and External Relations, John McCarthy, contended that crime on the transit system is decreasing. He claims that compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2020, crime has dropped by 40 percent, with a 25 percent decrease in fare evasion since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

However, this is misleading. For instance, assaults on the subway hit a 27-year high in 2023, and polls consistently show a majority or plurality of the public believes crime on the transit network is getting worse—suggesting official crime statistics are deficient.

Zelensky Has Already Broken Trump-Putin Energy Infrastructure Ceasefire Deal: Moscow.

Russia is accusing Ukraine of breaching a U.S.-brokered halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump held a lengthy 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the latter agreed to a 30-day cessation of attacks on critical energy facilities and infrastructure. However, on Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed Ukraine violated the agreement by attacking an oil transfer facility in the Krasnodar Region.

The Russian facility services aninternational pipeline operation partially owned by American companies. According to the Russians, the incident reportedly involved three drones targeting the Kavkazskaya oil pumping station, causing a fire that emergency crews struggled to control.

Russian militaryofficials allege that Ukraine’s actions were intentional, aiming to disrupt peace efforts between Russia and the United States.

Meanwhile, Ukraine alleges that Russia—which has significantly degraded the Ukrainian energy grid—intensified artillery shelling and knocked out power to a Ukrainian city immediately following the pledge to halt energy infrastructure attacks.

“Clearly, this was a premeditated provocation by the Kiev regime aimed at derailing the U.S. president’s peace initiative,” Russian officials said on Wednesday.

Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelensky, who has been reluctant to agree to a ceasefire unless the U.S. agrees to intervene against Russia if the war reignites, is expected to speak with Trump in the coming days.

Diplomatic efforts regarding the Ukraine conflict are set to continue, with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announcing upcoming talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, European and United Kingdom officials plan to expedite arms shipments to Ukraine, anticipating further hostilities despite Trump’s ceasefire proposal.

Last Battle of Britain Pilot John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway Dies at 105.

The last remaining pilot who took part in the Battle of Britain in the Second World War has passed away at the age of 105. John A. Hemingway, thelast known survivor of the Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots who were pivotal in the fighting, passed away in Dublin, Ireland, the RAF announced.

Known as Paddy, Hemingway flew Hurricane fighters during the crucial air campaign that occurred from July 10 to October 31, 1940.The battle was a turning point in the war as RAF pilots prevented Adolf Hitler’s Operation Sea Lion, a planned invasion of the British Isles.

The RAF had just 749 fighter aircraft against the German Luftwaffe’s 2,550. Despite being outnumbered, theBritish pilots succeeded in holding off German bombers and securing the air space above Britain.

Winston Churchill, the then-Prime Minister of Britain, acknowledged the valor of the RAF pilots during an address to the House of Commons in August 1940. In his tribute, Churchill stated, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Throughout World War II, Hemingway flew missions over France, Britain, and Italy, surviving being shot down four times between 1940 and 1945. In July 1941, he was awarded Britain’s Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery in combat.

The death of Hemingway comes as some fear the potential of a Third World War amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. President Donald J. Trump aims to end the conflict and has explicitly told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky he is gambling with World War Three by resisting a ceasefire.

Putin, Trump trust each other – Kremlin

Following the presidents’ phone call on Tuesday, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that further contacts will be arranged in short order

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, trust each other, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said regarding the two leaders’ phone conversation on Tuesday.

During the call, which lasted more than two hours, the two heads of state discussed the resolution of the Ukraine conflict, with Putin responding positively to a 30-day ceasefire proposed earlier by Trump and agreeing to halt attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure as an initial step in that direction. On top of that, the Russian and US presidents reportedly discussed the situation in the Middle East.

Speaking to Russian media on Wednesday, Peskov stated,“I can say with a high degree of confidence that Presidents Putin and Trump understand each other well, trust each other, and intend to proceed step-by-step along the path of normalizing Russian-US relations.”

According to the Kremlin spokesman,“both today and tomorrow, there will be additional arrangements of concrete dates for next contacts as well as the makeup [of the delegations].” He promised to reveal more details once Moscow and Washington have agreed on these specifics.

Peskov told reporters that given the legacy left behind by the previous administration in Washington, getting relations back on track is a labor-intensive task. However, the two presidents’ “strong will” provides grounds for optimism, the official stated.

According to Peskov, the two presidents discussed Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine, which will “top the agenda of any contacts” on resolving the conflict. However, given its sensitivity, the issue will not be discussed publicly for the time being, the official stressed.

President Putin also conveyed some other “nuances in the context of a potential ceasefire” to his US colleague, the Kremlin spokesman revealed.

Peskov concluded thatMoscow is “closely watching whether the Kievregime will heed the strong determination of the Russian and US presidents to do everything possible” to settle the conflict peacefully.

According to the Kremlin’s readout of theMarch 18 call, Putin “immediately” ordered Russian troops to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy sites following the conversation, and also responded “favorably” to the maritime truce proposal, with specific details to be worked out in further talks.

Commenting on the talks in a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that the peace process “is now in full force and effect.”

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated on Tuesday that he supports a maritime ceasefire and a moratorium on strikes against energy facilities, pending further details from the US.

Trump reveals he had ‘other’ calls with Putin

Those conversations with the Russian leader have not been made public, according to the US president

US President Donald Trump has stated thathe’s had phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin other than the ones made public since he took office on January 20.

So far, the Kremlin and the White House have officially confirmed two conversations between the leaders, with one taking place in mid-February and the other on Tuesday.

Trump said in an interview with the Washington Examiner that the one this week “was a very good call.”

“I think it is the beginning of something good. The beginning really took place three or four weeks ago. You know, I have spoken to Putin over — this is not just a call that began it. We have had other calls,” he claimed.

Those contacts have not been disclosed to the public by Washington or by Moscow, but they were “positive,” the US president added.

Trump insisted that his agreement with Putin during Tuesday’s call for Russia and Ukraine to refrain from striking each other’s energy infrastructure for 30 days is “a big thing.”

The Kremlin announced that Putin “immediately” ordered the Russian military to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, while the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday that it had to shoot down seven of the drones it had already launched towards targets in Nikolaev Region after receiving the president’s command.

The US leader expressed hope that Tuesday’s agreement“will lead to other things,” including “probably a full ceasefire at the appropriate time.”

“It is hard right now because you have got guys looking at each other with gun barrels… but the next thing would be a full ceasefire and a deal,” he said.

Last week, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow to propose a 30-day ceasefire, to which Kiev had agreed to earlier.

The Russian leader said he endorses the idea of a ceasefire in principle, but insisted on resolving several issues before it can go into effect, including the fate of Ukrainian forces currently encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region.

He also expressed concerns that Kiev could use the pause in the fighting to replenish its military after a series of defeats on the battlefield.

US scraps monitoring of alleged ‘Russian sabotage’ – Reuters

Several national security agencies have reportedly halted a tracking program launched by the Biden administration

The US has halted a multi-agency program set up to detect and counter potential “sabotage, disinformation, and cyberattacks” it claims Russia could launch against the West, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing current and former officials.

The outlet says it could not verify if the order came from US President Donald Trump.

The program, initiated under former President Joe Biden and led by the country’sNational Security Council, involved at least seven US security agencies and the EU, to counter alleged Russian “hybrid activities,” the outlet said.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Western officials have accused Russian intelligence agencies of conducting a covert campaign to weaken US-led support for Kiev. They claimed that Moscow has been “escalating a shadow war against Western nations” allegedly involving arson attacks, assassination attempts, election interference, damage to undersea cables, and other plots.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as “unfounded,” with the Kremlin describing the allegations of so-called “Russian sabotage” as “empty and ephemeral.”

Since assuming office for the second time, Trump has diverged from Western efforts to isolate Russia, and instead opened direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while publicly clashing with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, the article noted.

Trump administration officials ignored calls to continue the monitoring effort, the outlet claimed, adding that “much of the work has come to a standstill” since Trump took office in January.

Asked about Washington’s suspension of a “hybrid warfare campaign” monitoring, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters that theTrump administration was trying to get rid of “everything ineffective, corrupt and implausible,” something he said was “understandable.”

Over the past several months, there have been multiple cases in which telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged by vessels operating from Russian ports, triggering speculation that Moscow was behind the damage. However, an investigation carried out by NATO prosecutors has failed to find any evidence connecting the incidents to Moscow.

Peskov has previously stated that“it is quite absurd to continue to blame Russia for everything without any grounds.”
