Ben & Jerry’s says its CEO was fired for the company’s political posts

By Jordan Valinsky, CNN Published 8:06 AM EDT, Wed March 19, 2025

Ben & Jerry’s is accusing its parent company Unilever of breaching its merger agreementby ousting the ice cream company’s CEO for the brand’s repeated public comments on progressive issues, removing its chief executive without the board’s approval.

It’s the latest escalation of an increasingly ugly dispute between the brand and its conglomerate owner that began in 2021.

In an amended complaint filed Tuesday in New York, lawyers for the ice cream brand said that rules stemming from its 2000 merger “protects Ben & Jerry’s interests by precluding the unilateral removal of its CEO,” butUnilever did just that — “removing and replacing” CEO David Stever by not following the proper protocols and said it was because of the brand’s continued comments on progressive issues.

The lawsuit said that Unilever’s motive for the removal of Stever was due to his “commitment to Ben & Jerry’s Social Mission and Essential Brand Integrity … rather than any genuine concerns regarding his performance history.”

Unilever (UL) didn’t immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. The UK company announced in March 2024 it was looking to sell Ben & Jerry’s and its other ice cream brands but it has not yet completed a deal.

Tuesday’s complaint is the latest in a string of them against Unilever for attempting to silence the ice cream brand on social media. In January, the company alleged that Unilever “unilaterally barred” from a post referencing abortion, climate change and universal healthcarebecause it mentioned President Donald Trump.

Ben & Jerry’s says the behavior continued in recent weeks, alleging thatUnilever blocked the company from making a post about Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian refugee whose green card was revoked over his involvement with demonstrations last year at Columbia University in New York, and remains in ICE custody.

The post on X would have included a link to the ACLU petitioning for his release, but wasn’t published and Unilever “provided no explanation for the censorship.”

Another post that was allegedly prohibited from being published was in celebration of Black History Month in February.

Ben & Jerry’s initial lawsuit, filed in November 2024, alleged Unilever silenced its attempts to publicly support Palestinian refugees and resolutions to end military aid to Israel, where the company had done business since 1987.

It also alleged that Unilever threatened to dismantle Ben & Jerry’s board and sue members because the company’s management and board planned to issue a statement calling for “peace” and a “permanent and immediate ceasefire.”

Stever, who’s been with the ice cream brand since 1988 and started as a tour guide, was appointed CEO in May 2023. It’s unclear what position he currently holds with the company.

Unilever is also undergoing a change in management, with its CEO stepping down a few weeks ago after a short stint in the position.

Zelensky makes new victory promise

(The idiot points to his head to prove he’s thinking)

The Ukrainian leader has insisted “we will win” and teased coming contact with US President Donald Trump

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday reiterated his pledge to achieve a victory over Russia, as he touted an upcoming phone call with US President Donald Trump.

Zelensky made the remarks during a press conference alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during which he expressed hope that Trump will brief him on Tuesday’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Today I will have contact with President Trump. We will discuss the details with him today. I am thinking about the details of the next steps. Well, and I think I will hear from him the details of his conversation with

Putin,” Zelensky stated, reiterating his determination to achieve a victory.

“And we live, we defend ourselves, we survive, we fight for our sovereignty and our independence. And we will definitely win this war,”he said.

The conversation between Putin and Trump lasted for 2.5 hours, during which the presidents focusing on the Ukrainian crisis and ways to resolve it. Putin backed Trump’s proposal of a mutual 30-day suspension of strikes on energy infrastructure facilities and repeatedly “immediately” ordered a halt to such strikes, according to the Russian defense ministry.

Zelensky publicly backed the idea shortly after the Trump-Putin talks concluded. However, he expressed concerns about how exactly the pause could be implemented.

“If Russia stops striking our targets, we will definitely stop hitting targets in Russia. But Putin’s promises alone are not enough; there must be control. The main subject of this control must be the US,” he said during the press conference.

Following Putin’s order the Russian military had to shoot down seven of its own kamikaze drones launched at Ukrainian energy facilities. A few hours after the Putin-Trump talks concluded, Kiev attacked a Russian oil pumping station with three fixed-wing kamikaze drones.

The attack sparked a massive fire at the facility, the military noted, describing the incident as“yet another provocation deliberately staged by the Kiev regime to derail the peace initiatives coming from the US president.”

I’m so sick of this little shit, I’m sure Russia is too. Trump must be extremely patient because he rarely shows frustration.

Trump holds ‘very good’ call with Zelensky

The US president has revealed that conversation revolved around his talks with Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday held what he described as a “very good” phone call with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky. The conversation primarily revolved around his 2.5 hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, Trump revealed in a brief statement on his Truth social media platform.

“Much of the discussion was based on the call made yesterday with President Putin in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs. We are very much on track,” Trump wrote.

The US president said he will ask US Secretary of StateMarco Rubioand National Security AdvisorMichael Waltz to “give an accurate description of the points discussed,” while a readout will be published.

The Trump-Putin talks primarily revolved around the Ukrainian crisis and ways to resolve it. During the conversation, Trump floated an idea of both Moscow and Kievmutually halting strikes on energy infrastructure facilities for 30 days. Putin backed the idea and immediately ordered the military to halt such attacks, according to the Russian defense ministry.

On Tuesday Zelensky publicly backed the idea and explicitly agreed to it during the phone call with Trump, Bloomberg reported. Earlier in the day, however, Ukraine’s leader expressed concerns over how exactly such a truce could be implemented.

“If Russia stops striking our targets, we will definitely stop hitting targets in Russia. But Putin’s promises alone are not enough; there must be control. The main subject of this control must be the US,” Zelensky said during a joint press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
