Defense Dept. restores story on Jackie Robinson's military service

Mar. 19, 2025

The Department of Defense restored a story on its website highlighting Jackie Robinson's military service Wednesday after deleting it as part of President Donald Trump's efforts to purge references to diversity, equity and inclusion through a "digital content refresh."

While it does not make any references to DEI, the story on Robinson was among a swath scrubbed from government websitesin recent days. Before the story on Robinson's service was restored, the URL had redirected to one that added the letters "dei" in front of "sports-heroes."

In a statement sent by the Pentagon at 1:24 p.m. ET Wednesday, press secretary John Ullyot cited Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in saying "DEI is dead at the Defense Department" and said the Department of Defense was "pleased by the rapid compliance" that led to the erasing of stories on Robinson, Navajo Code Talkers and Ira Hayes, one of six Marines who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima.

At 2:46 p.m. ET, Ullyot released an updated statement.

"Everyone at the Defense Department loves Jackie Robinson, as well as the Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee airmen, the Marines at Iwo Jima and so many others – we salute them for their strong and in many cases heroic service to our country, full stop," the updated statement said. "We do not view or highlight them through the prism of immutable characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, or sex. We do so only by recognizing their patriotism and dedication to the warfighting mission like ever other American who has worn the uniform.

"In the rare cases that content is removed either deliberately or by mistake that is out of the clearly outlined scope of the directive, we instruct the components and they correct the content so it recognizes our heroes for their dedicated service alongside their fellow Americans, period."

By 3:09 p.m. ET, the story was restored with its original URL. The Department of Defense declined to answer questions from ESPN as to whether the removal of Robinson's story was deliberate or mistaken.

Robinson, who served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947when he debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers. One of the most integral figures in American sports history, Robinson won the National League MVP and Rookie of the Year awards during a 10-year career that led to a first-ballot induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The story is part of the Department of Defense's "Sports Heroes Who Served" series. Other stories, including one on Pee Wee Reese that references his acceptance of Robinson, his teammate, amid racial tensions in his first season, remained on the site during the time Robinson's story was scrubbed. The Department of Defense also removed a website that celebrated Charles Calvin Rogers, who received the Medal of Honor, but later reestablished the site, according to The Washington Post.

Robinson was drafted into military service in 1942 and eventually joined the 761st Tank Battalion, also known as the Black Panthers. He was court-martialed in July 1944 after he refused an order by a driver to move to the back of an Army bus he had boarded. Robinson was acquitted and coached Army athletics teams until his honorable discharge in November 1944.

Jury finds Greenpeace liable for more than $660 million in relation to pipeline protest

By Laura Paddison, CNN

Wed March 19, 2025

A North Dakota jury on Wednesday found Greenpeace liable for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to a giant pipeline company in relation to protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline nearly a decade ago.

Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners sued Greenpeace in 2019, accusing the environmental group of masterminding the protests, spreading misinformation and causing the company financial loss through damaged property and lost revenues.

After a three-week trial, the 9-person jury took two days to return their verdict, awarding more than $660 million in damages to Energy Transfer.

The result is a huge blow to the 50-year-old environmental organization, which previously said that the case could bankrupt its US operations, and experts say it could have chilling implications for free speech.

“I think this is one of the worst First Amendment decisions in American history,” said Marty Garbus, a civil rights lawyer who has been monitoring the trial. “The decision is beyond comprehension.”

Other experts have criticized the lawsuit as an egregious SLAPP lawsuit — a strategic lawsuit against public participation that seeks to silence critics by burying them in exorbitant legal costs.

“The verdict is a loss for Greenpeace, but more so for the First Amendment right to speak out, and thus for all Americans,” said James Wheaton, founder and senior counsel for the First Amendment Project. “If huge corporations can do this to one they can do it to everyone.”

Greenpeace has confirmed it will appeal.

The lawsuit, brought against Greenpeace USA, Netherlands-based Greenpeace International and Washington DC-based Greenpeace Fund, revolved around protests against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in 2016 and 2017.

The Standing Rock Sioux fiercely opposed the pipeline, saying it would endanger the Missouri River, their water source, and damage sacred tribal grounds. Many thousands of people, including representatives of more than 100 tribes and dozens of non-profits, joined in the months-long protest.

Energy Transfer accused Greenpeace of carrying out a scheme to stop the pipeline’s construction. During trial opening statements, the company’s attorneyTrey Cox accused the organization of paying outsiders to come into the area and protest, organizing protester trainings, and making defamatory statements about the pipeline.

“Today, the jury delivered a resounding verdict, declaring Greenpeace’s actions wrong, unlawful, and unacceptable by societal standards. It is a day of reckoning and accountability for Greenpeace,” Cox said in a statement.

“This verdict serves as a powerful affirmation of the First Amendment.Peaceful protest is an inherent American right; however, violent and destructive protest is unlawful and unacceptable,” Cox said.

Greenpeace, however, said the claim was a thinly veiled attack on free speech and protest, and was anattempt to make the group responsible for everything that happened at a protest attended by many thousands of people, most of whom were unconnected to Greenpeace.

Attorneys for thegroup argued it had only a minor role at the protest teaching non-violent direct action skills at the request of Indigenous organizers. In relation to the alleged defamatory statements, Greenpeace argued these claims had been widely reported in the media before it ever commented on them.

“We should all be concerned about the future of the First Amendment, and lawsuits like this aimed at destroying our rights to peaceful protest and free speech,” said Deepa Padmanabha, senior legal advisor for Greenpeace USA.

Last month Greenpeace International filed its own claim against Energy Transfer in a Dutch court using the European Union’s anti-SLAPP legislation, seeking to recover the damages and costs the organization has incurred as a result of the company’s lawsuits.

“The fight against Big Oil isn’t over today, and we know that the truth and the law are on our side. Greenpeace International will continue to campaign for a green and peaceful future. Energy Transfer hasn’t heard the last of us in this fight” said Kristin Casper, Greenpeace International’s general council in a statement.

VA to phase out treatment for gender dysphoria

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 17, 2025

All savings from this change will go to helping paralyzed Veterans and amputees

WASHINGTON — In response to President Trump’s Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government executive order, VA announced today that it will phase out medical treatments for gender dysphoria.

President Trump’s Defending Women EO states, “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.” VA is adjusting its policies to fully comply with the EO.

Any and all savings VA achieves by stopping specific medical treatments for gender dysphoria will be redirected to help severely injured VA beneficiaries— such as paralyzed Veterans and amputees — regain their independence.

Effective immediately,VA will not offer cross-sex hormone therapyto Veterans who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria, unless:

Such Veterans are already receiving such care from VA; or

Such Veterans were receiving such care from the military as part of and upon their separation from military service and they are eligible for VA health care.

Veterans who do not meet the criteria above are not eligible for cross-sex hormone therapy through VA health care.

VA will not provide any other medical or surgical therapy for gender dysphoria to any patients in any circumstance.

“I mean no disrespect to anyone, but VA should not be focused on helping Veterans attempt to change their sex. The vast majority of Veterans and Americans agree, and that is why this is the right decision,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “All eligible Veterans – including trans-identified Veterans – will always be welcome at VA and will always receive the benefits and services they’ve earned under the law. But if Veterans want to attempt to change their sex, they can do so on their own dime.”

Eligible Veterans diagnosedwith gender dysphoria or identifying as transwill continue to receive comprehensive VA health care, which includes preventive and mental health care. Today’s announcement does not affect VA medical care for eligible Veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer.

VA’s LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator and VISN Lead roles are not affected by this policy change, as they ensure clinically competent, Veteran-centered, and effective care. VCCs are familiar with best clinical practices, understand how to address health issues for LGBTQ+ Veterans, and provide education and guidance at VA medical facilities.

Although VA has never offered sex-change surgeries, the department has been providing treatmentfor gender dysphoria formore than a decade.

VA has not kept consistent and reliable records regarding the total number of Veterans who endured these procedures, the total amount of money spent on them or the total number of employees involved. Veterans Health Administration estimates indicate that less than one tenth of one percent of the 9.1 million Veterans enrolled in VA health care are trans-identified.

Until recently, however,VA had been promoting an array of services designed to help Veterans attempt to change their sex, including:

cross-sex hormone therapy

voice and communication training’s primary

so-called gender-affirming prosthetics, including breast forms, chest binders, dilator sets for post-vaginoplasty, packers, surgical compression vests, and wigs

Additionally, VA had been providingletters of support encouraging non-VA providers to perform sex-change surgeries on Veterans. The aforementioned services had been authorized under Veterans Health Administration Directive 1341(4), which has now been rescinded.

In addition to the changes announced today, VA facilities have already ensured that all intimate spaces, such as bathrooms, locker rooms and patient rooms, are designated by sex (male or female) or unisex for single-person spaces.

So the VA was hiding this under Trump’s First term. A decade means Obama started and pushed this.

Amtrak CEO steps down as Musk insists ‘sad’ rail service needs to be privatized

Stephen Gardner left position to ‘ensure that Amtrak continues to enjoy the full faith and confidence of this administration’

Katie Hawkinson

Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner is stepping down after Department of Government Efficiency leaderElon Musk called for the transit service to be privatized.

Gardner, 49, said he stepped down “to ensure that Amtrak continues to enjoy the full faith and confidence of this administration.” Meanwhile, the Amtrak board said they “look forward to working with President Trump and Secretary Duffy as we build the world-class passenger rail system this country deserves.”

Gardner had served in the role since 2022.

Amtrak, also known as theNational Railroad Passenger Corporation, is the national passenger rail service for the U.S. It is nationally chartered, meaning the federal government is the majority stockholder. It also means Amtrak board members are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

The rail service operates in 46 states, two Canadian provinces and Washington D.C. Amtrak set an all-time ridership record last year, servicing more than 32 million customers.

Musk called for Amtrak to be privatized, alongside the United States Postal Service, earlier this month.

"Basically, something's got to have some chance of going bankrupt, or there's not a good feedback loop for improvement," Musk told the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom conference on Wednesday.

"We should try to privatize everything we possibly can, and that would be my recommendation," he continued.

The DOGE leader calledAmtrak “a sad situation” and went on to claim the rail provider “can leave you with a very bad impression of America,” when compared with similar services in other countries.

But Amtrak has rejected criticisms that they’re not profitable — because profitability isn’t a goal of the organization.(==Why to fuck not?)

“Amtrak is sometimes criticized because it is not profitable,” the company said in a March statement. “That criticism is based upon a false premise and ignores the facts.”

“Amtrak’s statutory mission and goals make no mention of profitability,” the statement continued.“Indeed, they make clear that profitability is not Amtrak’s objective, directing Amtrak to provide efficient and effective intercity passenger rail service that maximizes the benefits of federal investments.”(what?)

The rail company also attributed any operational losses to poor funding: “It is further belied by more than half a century of inadequate federal funding that has left Amtrak with aged assets that are not in a state of good repair and thus more expensive to maintain.”
