DENVER: "Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees walked off the premises of a detention center in Aurora Tuesday night. The two detainees were able to walk out of the facility through a door that had unlocked due to a power outage. ICE discovered that the inmates were missing about three hours later, and a couple more hours would go by before local police said they were notified.

Aurora City Councilwoman Jurinsky said that to her knowledge, the inmates were being held on civil detainers, not criminal detainers, so getting involved would violate state law. She added that ICE would not confirm whether the escapees were being held on civil or criminal detainers.

“There is a state law here that supersedes the jurisdiction of the Aurora Police Department, ICE knows that,” Jurinsky said. “It’s not a fair statement to say that we refused to get involved. This is completely on ICE.”

According to the MOU, most of the detainees are non-violent status offenders waiting for deportation.
