Trump Administration and RFK Jr. Back USDA Move to Ban Soda from SNAP in 14 States, Aiming to Cut $5 Billion Soda Industry Revenue

Published Mar 22, 2025,

A campaign has emerged targeting the use of SNAP benefits for purchasing soda, with some officials in Washington D.C. reportedly working to prevent such purchases. The initiative is part of a broader 'Make America Healthy Again' (MAHA) agenda, which aims to restrict SNAP-eligible items to promote healthier dietary choices. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is involved in efforts at the USDA to support this initiative.

Several social media influencers have been accused of being paid by large soda companies, such as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, to oppose the proposed SNAP soda ban. These companies reportedly earn significant revenue from SNAP purchases, with estimates suggesting they pull in over $5 billion annually from these benefits. Influencers are reportedly being offered up to $1,000 per post to lobby against the ban, with soda accounting for 25% of Coke's revenue.

Critics argue that allowing SNAP funds to be used for soda is contrary to the program's nutritional goals, pointing out that taxpayer money should not subsidize unhealthy products that contribute to health issues like obesity and diabetes. Some states are reportedly preparing to submit waivers to remove soda from SNAP-eligible items, with support from the Trump administration. It's estimated that $10 billion of SNAP money was spent on sugary drinks last year, and soda companies stand to lose $20 billion if the ban is implemented across 14 states.
