JFK files: CIA contaminated sugar destined for USSR

The American spy agency’s operation aimed to ruin the taste of food for consumers and inflict financial losses on the Soviet Union

American spies contaminated 800 bags of sugar sent on a cargo ship from Cuba to the USSR in the 1960s, the newly released files on the assassination of John F. Kennedy have revealed.

One of the files analyzed by journalist and blogger Ben Norton and the Washington Post documents a “clandestine operation” by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) just months before the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

In August of that year, the CIA learned about a cargo vessel transporting 80,000 200-pound (90 kilograms) bags of brown sugar to the USSR, according to a declassified paper sent to General Edward Lansdale, who was the Pentagon’s deputy assistant secretary for special operations at that time and had a long history of working with the CIA.

The American spies then decided to launch a special operation to contaminate the shipment. They learned that the ship in question would briefly dock at Puerto Rico for minor hull repairs and would have to offload a part of its cargo.

“Through a clandestine operation, which was not detected and is not traceable, we were able to contaminate 800 of these bags of sugar,” the paper reported. According to the CIA, the contaminated bags would then spoil the entire shipment, making it “unfit for human or animal consumption in any form.”

The plan, however, was not to poison the Soviet people but merely to sour their taste for life.

“The contaminate we used will give the sugar an ineradicable sickly bitter taste, which no process will remove,” the spies said, maintaining that it was “not in any sense dangerous to health.” Those behind the operation still believed that it would “ruin the taste of the consumer for any food or drink for a considerable time.”

If successful, the operation was expected to inflict financial losses upon the Soviet Union amounting to between $350,000 and $400,000 at that time, according to the document. The fate of the shipment remains unclear as RT could not find any relevant Soviet data related to the case.

In 1960, the US imposed its first serious embargo against Cuba, halting all sugar purchases from the country among other measures. The move came in response to the Cuban Revolution, which put an end to the rule of the US-backed dictator, Fulgencio Batista.

Washington also made its NATO allies abandon Cuban sugar imports as well. The USSR then stepped in, becoming one of Cuba’s major sugar importers.

Wyoming becomes first state to enact citizenship proof law for all elections, including federal

"I'm pleased to announce that the Governor has allowed proof of citizenship and proof of residency for registering to vote to become law without his signature," Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray said.

Wyoming has become the first state to enact a law requiring proof of citizenship in all elections, including federal.

The bill was passed by the state legislature and became law without the governor's signature.

"I'm pleased to announce that the Governor has allowed proof of citizenship and proof of residency for registering to vote to become law without his signature," Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray (R) posted on X on Friday. "This was the #1 priority of our conservative election integrity reform agenda. With HB156 becoming law, Wyoming will further advance election integrity, as the only state in the nation to require proof of citizenship for all elections, an important priority of President Trump."

The law, House Bill 156, requires voters to provide proof of citizenship and Wyoming residency, in addition to instituting a requirement to reside in the state for a period of time before being eligible to register to vote. Other states that require proof of citizenship for voters do not apply the requirement to federal elections.

"Today marks a pivotal moment for election integrity in Wyoming," Gray said in a statement. "Proof of citizenship and proof of residency for registering to vote are both so important. Only United States citizens, and only Wyomingites, should be voting in Wyoming elections. Period.

"HB 156 makes Wyoming the first state in the nation to apply proof of citizenship for registering to vote for all elections," he continued. "This was the first priority of our conservative election integrity reform agenda. It will ensure that we protect Wyoming elections, and is also key in supporting President Trump’s pivotal work to have proof of citizenship for registering to vote with the SAVE Act at the federal level. I am thrilled that the priorities of the people of Wyoming have won out."

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) wrote in a letter to Gray that while he believed the bill to be somewhat redundant and contradictory of some statutes, he would allow it to become law as it granted the secretary of state "rulemaking authority … with regard to forms of identification to be used to prove Wyoming residency and United States citizenship."

Sanders abruptly tries to end interview when asked about Rep. AOC possibly running for Senate

"You want to do nonsense, do nonsense," Sanders said

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., tried to abruptly end an interview with ABC News after a question about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., possibly running for U.S. Senate when Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is up for re-election in 2028.

Sanders was asked if he would like to see Ocasio-Cortez, 35, in the Senate.

"Right now, we have, as I said, just a whole lot of people in the Congress. OK, Jonathan. Thanks," Sanders said as he got up from his chair.

"You want to do nonsense, do nonsense. No, I don't want to talk about inside the Beltway stuff. I got 32,000 people," Sanders said off-camera about the event he held with Ocasio-Cortez in Denver. "I don't want to talk about this."

He wound up answering one more question about his future in politics.

"Right now, I am very proud that the people of the state of Vermont sent me back to the Senate with 63% of the vote," Sanders said. "Right now I'm Vermont's senator. That's what I do, and I'm very happy to do it. I am 83 years of age, so. And I'm tired."
