Hailed by the British government as the world’s first online safety law, the Online Safety Act (OSA) became law in October 2023, but the duties related to the regulation of so-called illegal content took effect on March 17.

The law requires online platforms to implement measures to protect people in the UK from criminal activity, with far-reaching implications for the internet.

Gab, an American social media network, positions itself as a champion of free speech.

Gab CEO Andrew Torba said in a March 26 social media post that the UK government has demanded that it submit to “their new censorship regime under the UK Online Safety Act.”

Gab—which has no legal presence in the UK—was informed in a letter from UK regulator Ofcom on March 16 that it falls specifically within the scope of the law and must comply.

Under the OSA, sites that allow user interaction, including forums, must have completed an illegal harm risk assessment by March 16 and submitted it to Ofcom by March 31.

Ofcom warned that noncompliance could result in enforcement action—including massive fines of 18 million pounds (more than $23 million), or 10 percent of a company’s annual revenue—or even court orders to block access in the UK. Continue…

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked allied foreign ministers gathered in Brussels on Thursday to increase their defense spending to five percent of their gross domestic products (GDP) – a very substantial increase for most members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and considerably more than the even the United States spends as a percentage of GDP.

“We do want to leave here with an understanding that we are on a pathway, a realistic pathway, to every single one of the members committing and fulfilling a promise to reach up to 5 per cent of spending,” Rubio said from Brussels.

“No one expects that you’re going to be able to do this in one year or two. But the pathway has to be real,” he said.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly seemed rather cool to Rubio’s request. “I replied that the U.S. was at 3.2%,” she told reporters in Brussels.

This is much less of a mike-drop response than Joly seems to think, given the titanic size of both America’s GDP and military spending. The U.S. spent $916 billion on defense last year, which is far more than most of its allies combined, and in fact constitutes about 40 percent of the military spending for the entire world. A Ukrainian man has allegedly died following an encounter with recruitment officers, who tried to take him to a draft office as part of “forceful mobilization,” Strana.ua has reported. The outlet also published a disturbing video said to be taken at the scene.

The incident reportedly took place in the town of Sukhoy Liman in Ukraine’s southern Odessa Region. The clip published by Strana.ua and a local Odessa Info Telegram channel on Friday starts with a man sitting on the ground and not moving.

A group of men wearing military fatigues can be seen standing nearby. Civilians in the video refer to them as recruitment officers. Some people accuse them of beating the would-be recruit before he fell unconscious – something that draft officers deny. The onlookers also claim that one of the officers was seen beating an elderly woman in the area.

The would-be recruit is then seen falling to the ground. The man shows no signs of life as he is lying unresponsive with his eyes wide open. “It’s over, he is dead,” people in the crowd can be heard saying, with some of them accusing the officers of “beating him to death.” One of the draft officers then tries to revive the man with a heart massage to no effect. He delivered the remarks on Thursday as he unveiled retaliatory measures for Trump’s claimed “reciprocal” tariffs, which include an additional 25% automobile industry tariff on Canada. Ottawa has responded by tariffing all cars and vehicle content imported from the US that is not compliant with USMCA, a cornerstone free trade pact between the US, Canada, and Mexico.

The sweeping new wave of tariffs ranging from 10% to 49%, affecting most countries in the world, was rolled out by Trump on Wednesday on what he called “liberation day” in an effort to rectify America’s import-export imbalance. Global News reporter Mackenzie Gray posted a video of Carney walking into a press conference at Martinrea in Vaughan, ON, with Thunderstruck playing.

“He walked out to ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC, which Carney said was his ‘warm-up tune’ when he played minor hockey,” wrote Gray in the caption.

CTV News reporter Judy Trinh also posted a video of the same event, with the caption, “AC/DC Thunderstruck was Carney’s warm-up song when he played hockey.”

Carney, born on March 16, 1965, was 25 years old at the time of the song’s release.

Three Ontario businesses have been fined after a joint investigation between the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) identified more than 700 illegal workers who did not have permission to be in Canada.

The businesses—CDA Landscape Services, TDA Landscape Services, and SDA Services—pleaded guilty to hiring foreign nationals without authorization on Feb. 28, according to an April 4 Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) news release.

CDA Landscape Services faced 20 counts of hiring foreign nationals without authorization, while the other two companies each faced two counts, CBSA said.

Following the guilty plea, CDA Landscape Services was fined $400,000. The other two companies were each fined $25,000.

CBSA said the investigation stems from a 2019 incident where the OPP arrested one of the illegal workers for impaired driving.

OPP and CBSA said the joint investigation uncovered a “network of unauthorized workers” that spanned across southern and eastern Ontario and the GTA. Continue…

Ottawa is advising Canadians to expect scrutiny at U.S. border crossings, advising travellers to comply with border agents and warning of the possibility of being detained by authorities, and having their cellphones searched.

The government’s travel website was updated on April 4 to include advice for travellers heading south, saying border agents have “significant discretion” about who gets into the country.

“Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices,” the travel advisory says. Continue…

Wang Yan vividly recalls the last time she heard her husband’s voice, more than five years ago.

It was Dec. 13, 2019, and Canadian citizen Li Yonghui had gone to a public square in Shijiazhuang, in China’s Hebei province, to exercise as he spoke to his wife in Canada by mobile phone.

“Suddenly, the call ended, like someone was grabbing his phone. And I called other family (in China) and no one knew what happened,” Wang recalled.

Li had been seized by city police, who accused him in a social media post of “allegedly gathering public funds illegally” through his company Qingyidai, a platform for person-to-person lending.

Li has been in detention ever since, without ever being tried or sentenced.

Quebec’s Public Security Department announced late Friday afternoon that most random traffic stops by police are suspended, days after the Court of Appeal affirmed that arbitrary road checks lead to racial profiling.

The new policy has been in place since April 1, the department said, the day Quebec’s Court of Appeal refused the government’s request to allow arbitrary police traffic stops to continue until the province’s legal challenge is heard before the Supreme Court.

In a decision rendered Monday, the Court of Appeal said the negative impacts of random stops on the Black community outweigh the benefits to the public of letting them continue. Instead, Court of Appeal Justice Stéphane Sansfaçon allowed only certain types of traffic stops to go ahead while the case makes its way through the Supreme Court legal process. Continue…

An Alberta doctor accused of unprofessional conduct by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) following public comments critical of public health responses during the COVID pandemic will get to keep his licence.

The CPSA said Dr. Roger Hodkinson made several public comments that violated the Canadian Medical Association’s code of ethics, between November 2020 and April 2021, in a media interview, online, and at an Edmonton City Council meeting,

Some of the comments included: “Masks are utterly useless, there is no evidence based with their effectiveness whatsoever”; and “You’re being led down the garden path by the chief medical officer of health for this province,” according to the CPSA decision.

Hodkinson also said: “The vaccine is first of all unnecessary. Secondly, it’s reckless in terms of how it’s being introduced because it’s certainly not been shown to be safe.”

The decision also noted a comment by Hodkinson that anyone with a medical background who said “this vaccine is safe without any qualification” was guilty of medical malpractice.

He also said nothing would control the spread of the virus, according to the CPSA decision. Continue…
