Skywatchers are scanning the night sky for an explosion that happened 3,000 years ago.

A nova called T Coronae Borealis, called the “Blaze Star,” is expected to soon be visible in the night sky, according to Space.com. Experts say it will be visible without fancy equipment.

That pairing of a hot, red giant star and a cool, white dwarf star is about 3,000 light years away. Because it explodes every 78 to 80 years, and the last explosion took place in 1946, the next explosion has been expected for months.

In April, the constellation that hosts the Blaze Star will rise in the eastern sky three hours after the sun sets and be visible about four hours after sunset.

Predictions that the explosion will be visible have been ongoing for months, with some stretching as far into the future as Nov. 10, June 25, 2026, and Feb. 8, 2027, according to ABC.

“It could go up tonight, it could go up next month, any month now, there you go,” Louisiana State University professor Brad Schaefer said, according to WBRZ-TV. Continue…

UPDATE: Late Saturday, Ottawa Police posted on X the following morning: "A man has been charged with several offences after an incident at East Block yesterday. At about 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2025, a man entered the security screening area of the East Block of Parliament Hill and began making threats to the safety of those inside.

The man was isolated to the security screening area, and the Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) attended to facilitate an evacuation of the building and surrounding area.

Multiple OPS and PPS resources were deployed, including OPS CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives), Emergency Services Unit, K9, Tactical, Negotiators, Neighbourhood Resource Teams and Traffic. After hours of negotiations, the man surrendered peacefully to police and was arrested on scene. Several packages were found in the area and were searched and cleared by police.

No one was injured in the incident. No explosives, weapons or hazardous materials were located on the accused."

Saskatchewan government has announced it is lifting its temporary pause on the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), following a federal decision earlier this year to cut in half the province’s nominee allocations.

Officials say Saskatchewan was left with 3,625 nominations, its lowest total since 2009.

Ottawa has also introduced a new requirement that 75% of nominees already be living in Canada with valid temporary status.

The Department of Justice has been ordered to release thousands of memos detailing the continued concealment of postwar files on Nazi fugitives who entered Canada.

Blacklock's Reporter says Information Commissioner Caroline Maynard issued the directive, setting a deadline of June 30, but the department has indicated compliance will come only after the election campaign.

“I order the Minister of Justice to provide a complete response to the access request as soon as possible and no later than June 30,” Maynard wrote in a March 28 Final Report.

The department identified 20,933 pages of previously undisclosed records related to cabinet’s refusal to release Nazi blacklists.

Despite a year’s delay, less than half of the records have been examined.

As of this year, the municipality located 30 kilometres northeast of Montreal is imposing an annual tax of $200 for residents who don’t have a leafy tree in their front yard, with a goal of reducing heat islands and improving biodiversity.

One public policy expert says using taxes to get people to be more green is a smart way to address environmental challenges—although not all residents agree with the town’s approach.

Jean-Sébastien Ménard, the town’s general manager, said the rule requiring a tree in every front yard has been on the books for years. But officials were moved to start enforcing it when they learned the results of a recent mapping project by Université Laval, which found the town was “highly exposed” to heat waves due in part to heat islands—buildings and patches of concrete or asphalt that raise temperatures higher than in surrounding areas.
