Euclid 'dark universe detective' spacecraft discovers 2,674 new dwarf galaxies

March 24, 2025

The latest wide-scale analysis of data from the Euclid Space Telescope has demonstrated just how big of an impact this European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft is set to have on science.

Importantly, it also shows that in science, sometimes good things come in small packages.

The space telescope — dubbed the "dark universe detective" due to its mission to better understand dark matter and dark energy — has been building the most extensive 3D map of the cosmos ever constructed.

Now, astronomers led by researchers from the University of Innsbruck have peered between the billions of stars, galaxies and supermassive black hole-powered quasars contained within 25 Euclid images to discover and characterize a staggering 2,674 dwarf galaxies.

"We took advantage of the unprecedented depth, spatial resolution, and field of view of the Euclid data," team leader Francine Marleau of the University of Innsbruck said in a statement.

"This work highlights Euclid's remarkable ability to detect and characterize dwarf galaxies, enabling a comprehensive view of galaxy formation and evolution across diverse mass scales, distances and environments."

Dwarf galaxies come in many guises

Dwarf galaxies are tiny galaxies that contain up to a few billion stars rather than hundreds of billions of stars like their larger counterparts. These galaxies are also often seen orbiting larger galaxies.

The Milky Way has numerous dwarf galaxy satellites of its own, for instance, the most famous of which are known as the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud.

It is believed that dwarf galaxies are created in the early stages of the development of large galaxies, or when collisions between two larger galaxies cause streams of material, including stars, gas, dust and dark matter, to be ejected into space.

Dwarf galaxies come in an array of different shapes. On one hand you have spheroid dwarf galaxies, spiral dwarf galaxies and elliptical dwarf galaxies, and on the other you have irregular dwarf galaxies.

The latter are chaotic galaxies that lack a distinct shape, and are low in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium — akin to galaxies from the early universe.

That makes dwarf irregulars good proxies for studying galaxies in the infant cosmos.

Altogether, the study and characterization of dwarf galaxies is important for understanding the evolution of galaxies. However, this isn't as easy as it sounds.

The low stellar content of dwarf galaxies makes them faint and difficult to observe. But that's why this massive Euclid haul of dwarf galaxies is such a big deal.

In fact, Marleau and colleagues were able to go beyond merely identifying dwarf galaxy candidates.

They were also able to characterize many of these small conglomerations of stars and determine the distance to these galaxies, as well as assess their stellar masses and the type of environments they dwell in.

Of the galaxies identified, the team said 58% are elliptical dwarf galaxies and 42% are irregular dwarf galaxies.

They found that just 1% of the dwarf galaxies observed by Euclid for this study are rich in globular clusters, which are tightly bound, nearly spherical collections of stars that usually contain the oldest stars found in a galaxy.

Around 4% of the identified dwarf galaxies contained a galactic nucleus, a dense central region packed with stars orbiting a small, dense and massive object (usually a black hole.).

Almost 7% of the dwarf galaxies were Blue Compact Dwarfs, which are small, irregular galaxies characterized by a high rate of star formation.

This starburst activity results in a blue-colored, compact center, the coloration of which is due to young, hot massive stars.

Marleau and colleagues will now continue to use Euclid, which launched in July 2023, to discover and catalog more dwarf galaxies.

Ouch! Carlo Rambaldi's original screen-used 'E.T.' model might reach $1 million at Sotheby's auction

March 23, 2025

Why is it so wet-looking? He looks like a professional wrestler covered in baby oil. We can't answer that question, but if you're willing to stump up a million dollars, you can own this incredibly glossy piece of sci-fi history.

It might be slightly scary, but this rare remnant of Hollywood's illustrious past was actually used in the filming of director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi fantasy, "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," and could fetch nearly one million dollars when Sotheby’s auction bidding finally closes on the historic lot next month.

An authentic shooting model of the beloved character has surfaced from the personal collection of Academy Award-winning special effects and makeup effects master Carlo Rambaldi, whose work has graced the screen for decades in blockbuster films such as "King Kong," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Alien," "Dune," "The NeverEnding Story," and "Silver Bullet."

Rambaldi sadly passed away in 2012 in Italy at the age of 86 after conjuring up a lifetime of cinematic magic.

Sotheby's is offering this one-of-a-kind E.T. prop estimated to bring $600,000-900,000 as part of the special lot titled "There Are Such Things: 20th Century Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy on Screen."

Bidding opens on March 21 and continues through April 3.

"We are truly honored to collaborate with Sotheby's and deeply grateful for this opportunity to bring my father’s work to auction," stated the artist’s daughter, Daniela Rambaldi.

"We hope that the artifacts being offered will bring immense joy to those who will cherish them in the years to come, just as they have brought great emotions to my family and shaped the magic of my childhood.

These iconic pieces hold a special place in our hearts, and it is our sincere wish that they continue to inspire and captivate future generations."

The squat three-foot-tall E.T. model was designed by Rambaldi in 1981 and was used in the amusing bedroom closet scene, where E.T. tries to silently blend into a huge pile of dolls and stuffed animals on the floor in an attempt to hide from Elliott’s mother.

Additional items being auctioned from the Rambaldi collection are: never-before-seen sketches for E.T.; an animatronic study of one of E.T.'s eyes; a pair of screen-used sandworm models from "Dune" (est. $15,000-20,000); and a dinosaur egg (est. $6,000-9,000) and baby dinosaur animatronic from the 1993 Japanese film "Rex: A Dinosaur's Story" (est. $8,000-12,000).

"Carlo Rambaldi's genius defined animatronics and special effects in film making, bringing to life some of cinema’s most unforgettable creatures," adds Sotheby’s Cassandra Hatton, vice chairman of science and natural history.

"His meticulous craftsmanship behind icons such as E.T., the sandworms of David Lynch's 'Dune,' and 'King Kong,' remains a testament to the magic of practical effects.

This model embodies the artistry of an era before CGI took hold, a nostalgic and iconic piece of Hollywood history as captivating as the stories themselves."

If a million dollareedoos is too rich for your blood, there's still time to pick up Chewbacca's bowcaster or Luke's medal from Star Wars for a much more reasonable half a million in the Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction too.

Shenzhou-19 astronauts complete third spacewalk, install final debris shielding on Tiangong

March 24, 2025

A pair of Chinese astronauts embarked on an extravehicular activity outside the Tiangong space station Friday, as the crew approaches the end of their six-month-long stay in orbit.

Astronauts Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong returned to the Wentian science module at 8:50 a.m. Eastern (1250 UTC) March 21, completing their seven-hour extravehicular activity (EVA).

Cai initially opened the Wentian hatch at 1:45 a.m. (0545 UT), according to China’s human spaceflight agency, CMSA.

Cai and Song installed space debris protective shielding to the outside of the Wentian module, completing the deployment of shielding carried out across a series of missions and EVAs.

The pair also installed extravehicular auxiliary facilities and conducted inspection of extravehicular equipment and systems.

The latter task included Cai riding Tiangong’s robotic arm to the specific points on the space station’s exterior, conducting photographic inspections.

Wang Haoze, China’s first woman space engineer and the third member of the crew, assisted operations from inside the Tiangong space station, as she had done for the mission’s previous two EVAs.

The first EVA, in December 2024, set an apparent world record for spacewalk duration at 9 hours 6 minutes. Cai Xuzhe has now completed five EVAs, more than any other Chinese astronaut.

“The astronauts performed exceptionally well during the extravehicular mission. First, all of our operations were successful on the first attempt, and the alignment and installation of devices were very precise.

In fact, the astronauts completed the tasks even faster than we had anticipated,” Wang Yanlei, a staff member with the Beijing-based China Astronaut Research and Training Center, told China Central Television (CCTV) following the EVA.

“The coordination between the astronauts, as well as between the space station and the ground team, was seamless,” Wang said.

The trio now have just over a month remaining aboard Tiangong, according to CMSA, having arrived at Tiangong Oct. 29 last year.

Over the past five months, the crew has conducted a variety of space science experiments and technology demonstrations, including fruit fly cultivation, experiments on protein crystallization, and studies on five types of cells.

Mission activities included materials science, carrying out a number of metal and non-metal experiments in Tiangong’s containerless experiment and high temperature scientific experiment cabinets.

“By leveraging the different experimental conditions of China’s space station and the International Space Station, we conduct scientific research in related fields in a complementary manner, enabling deeper and more extensive space exploration,” Wang Yifeng, an engineer at the Technology and Engineering Centre for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told CCTV.

The Shenzhou-19 mission has also established a new health assessment system for astronauts in a microgravity environment.

The system tracks key physiological and psychological indicators, including cardiac health, bone density, muscle mass and emotional well-being. The system also integrates traditional Chinese and Western medicine.

The crew have also been assisted by Xiao Hang (“Little Space”), a small AI robot equipped with human-robot interaction software to support mission operations.

Crews and backups for the following Shenzhou-20 and -21 missions—which will be China’s 15th and 16th crewed spaceflight missions overall—have been selected, according to Chinese space officials.

Neither the identities of the crews nor the timing of the missions have been announced. Each mission will last around six months. During crew handovers, Tiangong briefly hosts six astronauts for several days.

The Long March 2F rocket to launch the Shenzhou-21 mission in the second half of 2025 set off via train for Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, northwest China, March 18, after assembly and testing by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) in Beijing.

The rocket will be kept in a near-ready state to enable a rapid-response rescue launch if needed. The Long March 2F (Y20) and Shenzhou-20 spacecraft have been on standby for an emergency launch since the launch of Shenzhou-19, as a matter of standard practice.

Russia and U.S. Begin Ceasefire Talks in Saudi Arabia

March 24, 2025

Russian and U.S. officials began talks in Saudi Arabia on Monday over a partial ceasefire in the Ukraine war, a day after American and Ukrainian delegates held separate discussions.

U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a swift end to the war and hopes the talks in Riyadh could help lay the groundwork for a peace breakthrough.

Both sides of the conflict have put forward different proposals for temporary ceasefires, but cross-border attacks have continued unabated.

Originally planned as simultaneous meetings to allow for shuttle diplomacy — where U.S. negotiators would move between the delegations — the discussions are now taking place sequentially.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported that U.S.-Russia talks had begun at around 07:30 GMT.

The Ukrainian delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, concluded its meeting with U.S. officials late Sunday.

“The discussion was productive and focused — we addressed key points, including energy,” Umerov wrote on social media, adding that Ukraine remains committed to achieving a “just and lasting peace.”

Trump envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism that any initial agreement could pave the way for a broader ceasefire.

“I think you’re going to see in Saudi Arabia on Monday some real progress, particularly as it affects a Black Sea ceasefire on ships between both countries,” Witkoff told Fox News.

“And from that you’ll naturally gravitate to a full-on shooting ceasefire.”

US and Russia engaging in ‘creative’ talks – Moscow

24 Mar, 2025 13:37

The US-Russian talks held in Saudi Arabia are a “creative” endeavor, though they may not yield a diplomatic breakthrough on Monday, a Russian lawmaker who is part of Moscow’s delegation told journalists.

Grigory Karasin, chairman of the International Relations Committee in Russia’s upper chamber of parliament, provided the media an update during a break in the talks in Riyadh.

The discussions, which he described as “technical,” focus on maritime security in the Black Sea and the possibility of reviving the Black Sea Initiative, which was originally mediated by the UN and Türkiye.

Russia withdrew from the deal in July 2023, citing the West’s failure to provide sanctions relief for its grain exports, as the conditions of the arrangement required.

“Not every negotiation yields a high-profile document or agreement,” Karasin remarked before returning to the closed-door meetings.

“What matters is maintaining communication and understanding each other’s positions. In this regard, we are succeeding.”

Alongside Karasin, Russia’s delegation includes Sergey Beseda, an adviser to the director of the Federal Security Service.

Their American counterparts, as identified by Reuters, are Andrew Peek, a senior director at the White House National Security Council, and Michael Anton, a senior State Department official.

When asked about possible outcomes, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked earlier in the day that they “primarily concern the safety of maritime traffic.

However, if you recall [the original version] of the deal, there were significant obligations made to our side that were never fulfilled. This remains part of the agenda.”

US President Donald Trump has suggested revisiting the grain deal as part of his efforts to mediate a broader truce between Russia and Ukraine, Peskov added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to Trump’s proposal to suspend attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, while Ukraine committed to reciprocate.

However, Kiev has violated the partial ceasefire multiple times, including on Monday morning, according to Russia. Moscow has warned that it reserves the right to withdraw from the arrangement should Ukraine fail to meet its commitments.

A Ukrainian delegation is also present at the same luxury hotel in Riyadh where the US-Russian talks are taking place, but they have no direct contact with the Russian team.

The Ukrainians had their own talks with the US delegation the previous day.

Kiev attacks internationally-operated oil pipeline in Russia – Moscow

24 Mar, 2025 11:37

An armed Ukrainian drone was shot down overnight near an oil pumping station in Russia operated by an international company, the Russian Defense Ministry has said

The interception reportedly occurred early Monday around 7km from the Kropotkinskaya facility, which is part of the energy link managed by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC).

The ministry stated that the station was the intended target of the drone, citing a prior attack against it in mid-February.

The CPC includes major US oil companies such as Chevron and ExxonMobil among its stakeholders and primarily facilitates the export of Kazakh oil through Russian territory.

Moscow characterized the incident as yet another violation of a US-mediated partial ceasefire, under which both Moscow and Kiev committed to refraining from strikes on energy infrastructure.

The agreement aims to pave the way for a broader truce, with indirect negotiations taking place this week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The discussions will also focus on maritime security in the Black Sea. The US is serving as a shuttle, with no direct discussions between Russia and Ukraine planned.

”The Kiev regime continues to plan, prepare, and execute attacks against energy infrastructure, including internationally-owned assets within Russia,” the ministry said.

Last week, the Russian military accused Kiev of conducting a kamikaze drone strike against an oil transfer station in Krasnodar Region, which services the CPC-operated pipeline.

The incident occurred hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, approved the partial ceasefire. By the time the assault unfolded, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky publicly endorsed the agreement.

Days later, Moscow reported that Ukrainian forces had demolished a border gas metering station in Kursk Region, with Kiev attributing the explosion to Russian actions.

According to the Russian military, Ukrainian troops blew up the facility during their retreat after a months-long incursion.

Despite what the Defense Ministry labeled a “provocation,” it stated that it intends to maintain the partial ceasefire.

The Foreign Ministry later warned, however, that Russia could withdraw from the deal if Kiev continues its violations.

Trump grows increasingly frustrated as missile strikes and drone attacks continue – The Telegraph

March 24, 2025

Over the past few weeks, Ukraine and Russia have agreed at least to a partial ceasefire, yet missile strikes and drone attacks continue. This, in turn, frustrates US President Donald Trump, The Telegraph reports.

Today, another round of talks between the US and Russia will take place in Saudi Arabia. A day earlier, Trump's Special Envoy stated that Washington is optimistic that this meeting could pave the way for a full ceasefire.

However, the Kremlin downplayed expectations, saying that the meeting is "just beginning," "difficult negotiations" are expected, and the parties are "only at the beginning of this path."

In particular, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov's warning came less than a week after Russia rejected Trump's proposal for a full 30-day ceasefire, agreeing only to a partial one.

Ukraine and Europe have expressed concern that Russia is delaying to buy time on the battlefield, which is likely to frustrate Trump, who promised to end the war quickly.

Sources close to the US President indicated on Sunday that Trump is willing to wait for a favorable deal. However, some said that the White House chief is increasingly frustrated by the missile and drone attacks that continue despite both sides' promise to implement a partial truce.

"He (Trump - ed.) will be disappointed if they (Ukraine and Russia - ed.) continue bombing infrastructure, infrastructure facilities, and energy," said a source close to the administration.

People close to the President say that the White House remains calm and that it is necessary to "trust the process."

Yesterday, a meeting took place in Saudi Arabia between US and Ukrainian delegations. According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the discussions included proposals for securing energy and infrastructure facilities.

Before this, The New York Times reported that the meeting in Riyadh would last two days. On Sunday, talks would be held between the US and Ukraine (with the possibility of additional discussions the following day), and on Monday, between Washington and Moscow.

The goal of the current meetings is to agree on the details of a possible partial ceasefire. This includes refraining from strikes on the energy sector and ensuring safe navigation in the Black Sea. This, in turn, could become a step toward a full ceasefire.

As for the timeline, according to Bloomberg, the US intends to reach a truce agreement between Russia and Ukraine by April 20. However, the White House does not rule out that the timeframe may shift.

Taiwan leads Asia in coastal waste detection with AI drone system

24 March, 2025

The Environment Ministry announced a major breakthrough in coastal waste identification on Monday, leading the way in Asia.

It said that the Environmental Management Administration (EMA) has reduced the processing time for detecting coastal waste locations to just one day while improving accuracy by 50%.

This achievement is accomplished by integrating drone technology with AI image recognition to stitch aerial photos together.

Taiwan, with its 1,990-kilometer coastline, faces ongoing waste accumulation due to human activities, topography, and tidal effects.

Previously, the ministry utilized drone aerial photography, inspecting two kilometers of coastline and taking about 400 images per flight.

Photos would then be manually stitched together to identify areas with coastal waste, a process taking about a week’s time.

By integrating AI image recognition technology, EMA Director General Yen Hsu-ming (顏旭明) says that they have developed an AI system that electronically stitches images and can process 400 images in a day.

He adds the system can accurately calculate the area and potential volume of waste and issue reports. This achievement surpasses similar technologies in Japan and South Korea, making Taiwan the leader in Asia.

Last year, the ministry conducted 15 drone missions, covering 13.18 square kilometers and capturing 5,726 images, while identifying 477,630 square meters of waste with over 80% accuracy.

A total of 582 metric tons of waste was cleared, including 531 tons left by Typhoon Krathon. This year, the Environment Ministry plans to expand coastal inspections with 30 drone missions scheduled.

The AI system will also be enhanced to identify and categorize different types of waste for better management.

Russian Drone Attacks Injure Two in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia

Mar. 24, 2025, 8:30 am

Two people were injured in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia after a nighttime attack by Russian drones, local officials said Monday, March 24.

A 37-year-old man was wounded in the Fastiv district of Kyiv, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.

The man suffered shrapnel wounds and was taken to the hospital. The attack damaged two private homes and started a fire at a trading company, which was later put out, Kalashnyk said.

In Zaporizhzhia, one person was injured and suffered an acute stress reaction, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukrainian drones targeted several Russian regions overnight.

Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 28 drones - 12 over Bryansk, 12 over Rostov, two over Crimea, and one each over Krasnodar and the Sea of Azov. No injuries were reported.

The latest drone strikes on Kyiv have killed at least three people and wounded 10 since Saturday night, authorities said.

Kyiv’s military administration reported that the dead included a five-year-old child, while the youngest wounded victim was an 11-month-old baby. The drones mainly hit residential areas, causing fires.

The attacks come as Kremlin officials prepare to meet a US delegation for peace talks in Saudi Arabia on Monday.

Over the last week alone, Russia launched more than 1,580 guided bombs, nearly 1,100 strike drones, and 15 missiles of various types against Ukrainian targets.

Dozens have been wounded, and hundreds of homes have been destroyed.

Lebanon: One killed in Israeli drone strike

March 24, 2025

The Lebanese health ministry on Sunday said one person was killed in an Israeli drone strike, a day after the most intense escalation since a November ceasefire in the war with Hezbollah.

The ministry stated that the Israeli enemy raid with a drone on a car in Aita al-Shaab led to the death of one citizen.

In a statement, the Israeli military later said it had attacked and eliminated a Hezbollah member in the area of Aita al-Shaab.

Also, there was separate Israeli strikes on Sunday on Naqurah, Shihin and Labbouneh in the south near the Israeli border.

It was gathered that Saturday saw the most intense escalation since a November ceasefire halted the war between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

According to the Lebanese health ministry, seven people were killed Saturday, including in an attack on Tyre that reportedly targeted a Hezbollah official.

Israel has said the strikes were a response to rocket fire towards Israel.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah denied any involvement in the rocket fire, calling Israel’s accusations pretexts for its continued attacks on Lebanon.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Sunday described the Israeli strikes as extensive military aggression and slammed the country as a real threat to international peace and security.

The November ceasefire brought relative calm after a year of hostilities, including two months of open war, between Israel and Hezbollah.

North Korea is preparing to export drones alongside its recent full-scale drone production efforts, Daily NK has learned.

“The party’s Munitions Industry Department began inspections for overseas drone exports on March 7,” a senior Daily NK source in North Korea said recently.

“The inspections assess the capabilities and quality of drones produced since January, with approved drones scheduled for immediate export.”

Production facilities in North Korea – defense industry enterprises affiliated with the Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex in North Pyongan province – have been mass-producing reconnaissance, attack, and suicide drones.

As drones are relatively inexpensive to develop compared to other weapon systems yet highly effective for reconnaissance and strike missions, North Korea believes they will be competitive in the international weapons market.

“North Korea is looking to export drones as a way to address foreign currency shortages,” the source said.

“It’s focusing on leveraging existing personal networks and developing new clients to open markets in the Middle East and Africa.”

This indicates North Korea has already begun establishing various drone export channels.

According to the source, North Korea is eyeing Syria, Iran, and other long-time military cooperation partners as major drone export markets, along with Yemen’s Houthi rebels and armed groups in Africa.

The regime has also approached Russia, suggesting significant demand for North Korean drones.

North Korea is developing various strategies to conceal its role as the manufacturer when exporting these weapons, aiming to avoid detection by the international community.

“There was an order early this year not to include manufacturing numbers or markings on the drones,” the source said. “This was to avoid leaving evidence that they were made in North Korea.”

Additionally, the North Korean authorities have planned to disguise weapon shipments by exporting drone components through multiple channels for assembly at their final destinations, rather than shipping fully-assembled drones. According to the source, North Korea has frequently used this method for past arms exports. Payment methods are also becoming more covert.

North Korea particularly favors cryptocurrency payments, attempting to sell arms using Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Monero to avoid transaction tracking.

North Korea further evades international surveillance by using overseas front companies to complicate transaction trails.

“Munitions Industry Department officials quietly boast that selling drones while circumventing sanctions is their specialty,” the source said. “They’re constantly developing new methods to avoid international detection.”

While the international community monitors and sanctions North Korea to block its illegal and threatening weapons exports, critics argue stronger measures are needed to counter North Korea’s increasingly sophisticated evasion tactics.

Getting a drone to deliver your coffee at the Great Wall!

Updated: 2025-03-24 09:07

Not long ago, a friend of mine took a day trip to the Badaling section of the Great Wall on the outskirts of Beijing.

While there, she ordered a cup of iced coffee using an app on her mobile phone. To her surprise, it was delivered by a drone within five minutes.

This is a convenience that is increasingly available in China because of the rapid development of instant delivery services through drones.

In August, Badaling Great Wall launched the first drone delivery route in Beijing, as the scenic spot aims to enhance tourist experience, strengthen emergency support capabilities and improve the digital capabilities of its daily operations and maintenance.

A drone can carry up to 2.3 kilograms of goods and deliver them to buyers within three kilometers at a speed of 10 meters per second, according to Meituan, a major on-demand service platform.

The application scenarios of instant delivery services by drones are constantly expanding.

By the end of last year, Meituan had launched 53 delivery routes using drones in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guangdong province, and Nanjing, Jiangsu province.

In total, the drones had delivered over 450,000 orders, the company said.

Earlier this month, Meituan launched a drone delivery route at Fudan University in Shanghai, making it the first such offering at a university in the city.

This route connects a business complex in the Wujiaochang area of Shanghai with the student apartments in the east district of Fudan University.

Drones complete a round-trip flight every 15 minutes on average, and students can collect their orders at a cabinet set up near their dormitories.

When the drone operates at a distance of 50 meters, its noise level is only about 51 decibels, which is lower than the volume of a regular conversation, Meituan said.

South China's Guangdong has been a hub for drone development.

The consumer drones sector in the province accounts for over 70 percent of the global market share, while the industrial drones sector holds 50 percent of the international market, according to the local government.

In particular, Shenzhen in Guangdong has been leading the development of consumer drones and the application of delivery services by drones.

Futian Port in Shenzhen was the first major port to launch a drone delivery service late last year.

After buyers order products through their mobile phone apps, drones operated by Meituan fly to the designated store to pick up the goods. Then, they get their products delivered to an airdrop cabinet in a little over 10 minutes.

Meituan said residents in Hong Kong can pay for orders done via drone delivery services using Hong Kong dollars through WeChat.

In various application scenarios of the low-altitude economy, instant delivery services by drones in cities have been more complex, and they are currently being piloted in some particular areas.

The service is expected to gradually gain traction across the nation with favorable policy support, address the issue of urban traffic congestion and improve delivery efficiency.

An Iranian F-14 Tomcat Claims to Have Intercepted a U.S. Spy Drone

March 23, 2025

This alleged run-in between an Iranian F-14 and an American drone is not their first encounter.

Iran’s armed forces remain on “high alert” after a U.S. spy drone allegedly flew near Iranian airspace last week.

According to Iranian state-run media, the American unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) retreated only after encountering Iranian Navy F-14 fighter jets and reconnaissance drones.

Tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high as Iran’s regional proxy affiliates continue to harass American warships in the Red Sea.

In February, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) flew a pair of B-52 bombers over the Middle East alongside the Israeli Air Force, demonstrating its strength and resolute to counter Tehran’s malign behavior.

The Last Time Iranian Jets Tried to Take Out a U.S. Recon UAV

Notably, this alleged run-in between an Iranian F-14 and an American drone would not mark the first time such an interaction has occurred.

In 2012, two Iranian Air Force Su-25 pilots attempted to shoot down an American MQ-1 Predator UAV near Iran’s coastline, stirring up an interaction that would become quite the story.

Since the Predator drone is primarily designed for reconnaissance operations, the UAV would have been unprepared to defend itself if actually shot down by the Iranian pilots.

However, the Su-25s were unsuccessful in their attempts to take out the UAV with their 30mm cannons.

Even though the Predator UAV remained intact, the United States made sure to provide future Predator drones with fighter jet protection in the region going forward.

One year later, a pair of Iranian pilots flying the American-made F-4 Phantom would again try to take down a Predator drone.

This time, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptors were present. In fact, unbeknownst to the Iranian pilots, an F-22 piloted by Lt. Col. Kevin “Showtime” Sutterfield was eying the Iranian airframes the whole time.

Then-Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh explained what happened next: “He [the Raptor pilot] flew under their aircraft [the F-4s] to check out their weapons load without them knowing that he was there, and then pulled up on their left wing and then called them and said ‘you really ought to go home.’”

Why Does Iran Have F-4s and F-14s to Begin With?

Though it seems odd, Tehran still flies age-old American aerial platforms like the Phantom and Tomcat.

Prior to the Islamic Revolution in 1979, previous U.S. administrations desired to garner support from the Middle East as the Cold War was heating up.

After visiting former Iranian head of state Mohamed Reza Shah in the 1970s, President Richard Nixon set up a deal that would give Iran dozens of F-14s and Phantoms. Obviously, this exchange was later regretted.

Though these platforms are very old and outdated, Tehran has continued to maintain its fleets of F-14s and F-4s and they arguably remain the most formidable element in Iran’s aerial arsenal.

Deep Underground Military Bases (D.U.M.Bs.) - UFO Legacy Programs

Mar 17, 2025

A deep dive into the subject of UFO legacy programs and Deep Underground Military Bases (D.U.M.Bs.) sometimes also referred to as Subterranean Facilities (STFs).

Whether it be MS and the Dugway D.U.M.B., the Off-World Technologies Division under NSWC Crane, or the Northrop Tejon and Lockheed Helendale RCS facilities, the subject of clandestine, deep-sixed, underground military bases arises frequently in this channel's investigations.

This project serves to investigate acknowledged underground sites as well as unacknowledged underground sites possibly used for UFO RDT&E, and analyze and evaluate decades of persisting rumors of deep underground tunnel networks and Maglev train transportation systems connecting these deep sites.

This investigation aims to evaluate claims of underground networks of UFO legacy program-related STFs through analysis of the work of Dr. Richard Sauder and his 3 excellent, fact-driven books on D.U.M.Bs., research by tremendous UFO researchers such as Bill Hamilton and Leonard Stringfield, witness testimony, and myriad technical documents stemming from US Army Corps of Engineers, the RAND Corporation, Bechtel, TRW, BDM, and more.

As always, I will post links and research materials that aided in this investigation.

For the subject of D.U.M.Bs., I plan to post a host of research documents, including links to every single technical report mentioned in this project and Dr. Sauder's books alongside my usual research links.

This process will take some time, so please check back to this video for multiple links to a file filled with links, notes, and studies.

Michael Sheen recounts UFOs sighting over Port Talbot: 'There's something going on'

March 24, 2025

Welsh actor Michael Sheen has shared his experiences with paranormal activity, revealing that he saw UFOs in his hometown of Port Talbot as a child.

Speaking on the Scarred For Life podcast, Sheen recalled an incident from his youth when his typically level-headed neighbor told his parents she had seen UFOs.

Soon after, he had his own sighting, explaining: “I must have been about 12. I was coming home from school… as I was about to turn to go up the drive to my house, to my right was the edge of the mountain… and just as I turned, I saw something come along the edge of the mountain off in the distance.”

“So I stopped and then this light came out, and then two lights behind it, and then three lights behind it - a sort of phalanx of lights coming from behind the mountain and floating out over the sea. And as I'm standing there I'm thinking, 'I think those are UFOs.

“I'm fairly certain those are UFOs’. I thought I have to go into the house and tell my family that there are UFOs out here…but I knew that if I went in, they might disappear.

“So I just stood there, transfixed, and I watched them come all out over the ocean and then they stopped. And then they all disappeared.”

Years later, his father also claimed to have spotted UFOs in Port Talbot, and Sheen, who returned to live in the town in 2024, noted that others in the area have reported similar sightings.

“And then years and years later, now we're getting to about 10 years ago, it was New Year's Eve and my dad went upstairs to my mum and dad's bedroom,” he shared.

“It had gone midnight but he sort of wanted to see if he could see some fireworks because he was looking out across the town.

“And he said he saw something in the sky above Port Talbot that wasn't just a light - at first he thought it was fireworks - it was pulsating lights floating and he thought, ‘I'm seeing something extraordinary and obviously this will be on the news tomorrow and people will be talking about it’, and nobody did.

“I have since heard that people have seen things in Port Talbot so I think there's something going on there.”

Elsewhere, Sheen was declared an “incredible person” after helping to clear £1m worth of debt for neighbours in his local community of Port Talbot in new documentary Secret Million Pound Giveaway.

The programme, which aired on Channel 4 in March, saw the Good Omens actor, 56, use £100,000 of his own money to buy credit from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and wipe off debt to the value of £1m, to help over 900 people in south Wales where he grew up.

Sheen - who has previously described himself a not-for-profit actor, meaning he puts a lot of his earnings into charity and community projects - said he wanted to make this documentary to shine a light on social injustice, financial strife and the way that big banks and credit finance companies profit from the most vulnerable.

The Sandman star went on to explain that he wanted a "fair" credit system and was hoping that by raising awareness, he could help drive change.

Due to data protection reasons he will never know the identities of the people he has helped, but said that he wasn't bothered as it was "about making a difference and a point".

Eerie UFO sightings over Ireland – Just the beginning?

Updated: 24 Mar 2025 • 15:12

Strange lights have been spotted in Irish skies two nights in a row, baffling onlookers and fuelling conspiracy theories. But, are these eerie sightings just the start of something bigger?

Some say satellites. Others say swamp gas. Some claim they’re top-secret government aircraft. And others? They’re already using the “A” word… Is there something we’re not being told?

There’s something strange afoot in the skies above Ireland – and it’s not just the weather.

For two nights this week, baffled onlookers from the south coast to the capital watched as eerie glowing, flashing lights appeared in the night sky.

Over Dublin, not one but two unidentified lights shimmered side-by-side on Wednesday evening, March 19. The night before, a solitary flashing object lit up the skies further south, causing uneasiness on the ground.

Were they satellites? The International Space Station? Or something far less ordinary? Most onlookers blamed it on satellites, but an unexpected twist has just surfaced.

There was another incident, reported directly to the US National UFO Reporting Center, and it’s mind-blowing if accurate.

“Does anyone have any ideas?”

That was the plea from Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather, who took to social media to share footage sent to him by two followers. The videos showed what many would simply call a UFO – an Unidentified Flying Object – drifting through the darkness.

“I received two videos from followers showing an unusual object in the sky over the last two nights,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The first part is from last night over Dublin, and the second is from the night before off the south coast.”

His question – “Does anyone have any ideas?” – sparked a digital firestorm of unidentified proportions.

The canned response: Satellites and space stations

Several users were quick to offer grounded explanations, pointing out that low-orbit satellites like Starlink are common in the area one person replied.

Others suggested that it was the International Space Station, as it passed over Ireland at 7.13 PM on Tuesday night.

Some even said they had advance alerts about the ISS’s pass and confirmed it with their own eyes.

And yes – Starlink and the ISS are known to produce stunning, strange visuals in the night sky. Straight lines. Slow movement. Flashes of reflected sunlight. Nothing out of the ordinary, at least for seasoned skywatchers.

But not everyone was convinced…

And just when you thought the Irish skies had calmed down, another report surfaced on March 18- this time from Passage West in County Cork. Filed with the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC), the sighting had taken place on March 15 just after 9.35 PM.

According to the witness, a silent, silver dome-shaped object – roughly the size of a car – was seen ascending slowly into the sky, beaming a wide white light from its top before vanishing into the clouds.

The sky was dark and cloudy, and although the craft made no sound, the report noted that aircraft were nearby. It was visible for just 10 seconds according to the report, but the witness described it as “a massive sphere-like dome” that looked “like metal.”

No swamp gas here – just another curious light in the sky, and more questions with no easy answers.

The lantern theory – or cover story?

Some X users floated the idea that the lights were paper lanterns.

Sounds plausible in some cases – but not everyone’s buying it. Some commenters pointed out that the lights were far too steady and uniform to be lanterns, and that this did not explain the ‘flying disc’ sighting from March 15.

The alleged UFOs were seen from multiple locations across the country, on three separate nights. And this is where things get… interesting.

A changing narrative: UFOs vs UAPs

What we used to call UFOs are now officially referred to as UAPs – Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. The name change reflects a broader shift: from sci-fi oddity to legitimate national security concern.

Across the US, UK, and Ireland, military officials and intelligence agencies are increasingly taking sightings seriously. In 2021, the US Pentagon released a much-anticipated report on UAPs – and admitted they couldn’t explain over 140 incidents.

So while flashing lights in the sky might have everyday explanations, recent history tells us it’s worth keeping an open mind.

The conspiracy angle: a test run?

Some online sleuths have gone further. Could the double lights over Dublin have been part of a classified test? A foreign drone? Or even a psychological operations experiment to gauge public reaction? But what about the ‘disc’ sighting in Passage West, County Cork?

The idea of a psychological operation might sound outlandish – but it’s not impossible. The US military has previously tested stealth aircraft over allied nations.

And with more countries launching satellites and high-tech balloons, what appears harmless may have hidden intent.

With Russia and China currently stepping up their efforts, Europe and America are reportedly scrambling to stay ahead in the military tech race. And then, of course, there’s the ‘A’ word. But, that’s a topic for another article.

Public curiosity is growing – and fast

One thing’s certain: public interest in unexplained sightings is booming. NUFORC reported a notable uptick in Irish sightings during in 2024 and so far in 2025, aligning with the events over Dublin, Cork, and Passage West.

Was it just Starlink playing tricks on the eye? A trick of the light and angle? Or a quiet visit from something entirely different? This could all boil down to Chinese lanterns and swamp gas.

Or it could be that, in an age of AI, satellites, and government leaks, we’re starting to question what we see – and what we’re told.

Hudson Valley Resident Claims Unexplained Flying Object “Communicated” With Them

March 23, 2025

It's no secret New York, particularly the state's Hudson Valley area, has a long history with unexplained flying phenomena and other strange sightings.

As stated many times, these observations of so-called UFOs can easily be explained as drones, military planes, communication satellites, or even a meteor burning up in the upper atmosphere, though.

A resident in Dutchess County recently claimed they saw a strange object hovering near their home late one night.

The person even goes on to claim that the mysterious object even mimicked their own movements like they were being watched.

A resident in Red Hook in Dutchess County filed a report with the National UFO Reporting Center that they witnessed what they described as a "red light hovering in the treeline" outside their home, that they say was "blinking and moving irregularly."

The alleged sighting sounds very well like it could be a drone, though what the resident says the object did afterwards is actually quite unusual.

The report goes on to say that during the early morning hours of March 18, the resident said they heard a constant low-frequency humming sound outside their house.

The Red Hook resident went to their window and claimed they noticed a "red blinking light hovering in the tree-line a mile or so away".

The red light from the object was "blinking irregularly", and the resident says that after observing it for a few minutes it began to move in various directions.

This would go on for about 45 minutes, according to the witness, as the "blinking became faint and significantly less frequent."

This is when the witness says they attempted to communicate with the object.

The person says they copied each of the object's movements for a while, by moving their head.

The witness claimed they paused and asked the object aloud to copy their movements. Then, the person says they moved their head in a clockwise circle, only for the object to do the exact same motion.

As strange as it may sound, the same resident claims this isn't the first time they've seen something unexplained outside their house.

Back in September of 202, the same witness says they saw something similar that was "bright white", with a "slight tail beneath it".

Out of This World: A Landmark ‘UFO’ House Up for Grabs for Sale or Lease

March 23, 2025

A rare and elusive architectural gem—a neon-bright space pod—is available for lease or sale in Perth, and is just one of a handful of Finnish architect Matti Suuronen’s creations to remain intact worldwide.

Dubbed Futuro House, the 50sqm 1960s vessel was one of fewer than 100 modular, futuristic housing 1960s space-age utopianism creations by Suuronen.

Today, there are said to be only 40 remaining across the world, with seven located in Australia—one of them at Tasmania's Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

Another of the architectural 'UFOs' used to be something of a landmark in Perth, and was located on Leach Highway, in Perth’s south for many years.

After spending 18 months on Futuro House’s restoration, its owner Kyle Jeavons—director of development firm Human Urban—said it was a good time to offer his passion project for rent, or sale, to open the idea pool.

“It is such a unique and beautiful piece of architecture and could be so many things to the right home …gallery, bar, accommodation, community space etcetera,” he said.

Mr Jeavons acquired Futuro from Marcus Canning, the chief executive of ArtRage at the time, who had plans for it to be part of a potential Fringe World venue at some point.

“It was in Melbourne and previously used as somewhat of a green room and creative space at the Falls Music and Arts Festival. If walls could talk!” Mr Jeavons said.

“Many people in Perth would have been familiar with the Futuro that was used as a residential sales office on Leach Highway – but this is not that one!”

The idea behind Futuro came from a Dr Jaakko Hiidenkari who commissioned Suuronen in 1965 to design a ski chalet to be located in Janakkala in central Finland.

Suuronen's brainchild was for a prefabricated ski-cabin that was light and easily transportable to remote locations, and could be constructed on site.

The sale of Futuro is being facilitated by social enterprise Spacemarket, and director Sarah Booth said the vessel is currently a completely refurbished shell, awaiting assembly at its future new home.

She said the new owner, or lessee would need to fit it out on the inside. “We are looking to rent the refurbished shell out for approx $5000 plus GST per month,” she said. “We are open to a sale to the right owner.”

Ms Booth said they had been inundated with enquiry, with some people keen to use it as additional accommodation, to wineries and high-net worth individuals expressing interest. “Once the fit out is in, it’s about 35sqm (internal space),” she said.

“It was designed as a ski chalet so its really small, so for accommodation it would be for a couple – comfortably you could have a living room, and you can have a bathroom and a bed but then as a little bar you could put 15-20 people in it standing, or it could be a little gallery.”

Comprised of fibreglass with insulation, an experienced boat builder has painstakingly restored Futuro House to its former glory after being in an extremely dilapidated state when it was acquired by Mr Jeavons.

It is now a blue hue, which was one of the three original Futuro colours, Ms Booth said.

“At the site it’s assembled into almost like a UFO. “The beautiful door that steps down has all been restored, and all the windows have been restored.

Ideally, Ms Booth believed Futuro will be most appreciated by someone interested in collectibles. “I think someone that's interested in architecture,” Ms Booth said.

“Someone that's interested in something different with a story and character … the cost of the Futuro House is cheaper than building a house.

“It’s [for] someone who wants something different … in itself, it is a piece of marketing because it's so Instagram-able. It’s such an iconic piece of architecture.”
