Special Counsel's have been replaced a number of times(Ray Rice replacing Ken Starr, Jaworski replacing Archibald Cox).

Firing Mueller, without extreme political cover and cause would be devastating to Trump. Nixon did this to Archibald Cox in an event known as the Saturday Night Massacre and accelerated his Impeachment.
Firing Mueller does NOT end the investigation. Mueller would be replaced. Whomever replaces him can close the investigation(see ray rice and whitewater)
