President Trump said Wednesday that Republican lawmakers are “doing pretty good” after a train carrying them to their annual retreat collided with a truck in rural Virginia.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he spoke with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who gave him an update on the situation.

"They’re doing pretty good," Trump said of the members of Congress. "The train accident was a tough one — tremendous jolt and they are proceeding to their conference."

The president called the collision a “pretty rough hit” and said it was “very sad” that a person in the truck was killed.

A chartered Amtrak train full of GOP lawmakers traveling to their retreat in West Virginia hit a dump truck in the crossing grade earlier Wednesday, killing one person in the truck and leaving several members of Congress with minor injuries.

Trump said he still plans to address the lawmakers Thursday at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

The president said authorities are still investigating the collision, saying there is “no understanding as to what happened.”
