The Bible pronounces a blessing on baby-killers. Psalm 137:9 "Blessed is he who seizes your little ones and dashes them against the rock".

I posit to you that this is to be taken literally, not metaphorically. The author is literally invoking a blessing on anyone who takes Babylonian babies and kills them by smashing them against a rock.

There are five reasons that it is both foolish and dishonest to try to brush this aside as "metaphorical":

The author (David) is from the culture of ancient Israel, who on multiple occasions slaughtered infants, and often did this because they were specifically commanded by God to kill everyone, including babies (1 Sam 15:3, Joshua 6:21 etc.)

The author, David, was a war-hero and had a reputation for killing tens of thousands of people (1 Sam 18:7) and was known to have decimated entire cities of people, leaving none alive. Obviously this includes women and presumably children as well. (1 Sam 27:8-12) In other words this is written by someone who had very likely literally killed babies.

The Psalms are taken not as mere poems, but as true, doctrinal, and even literal by Paul- so much so that he uses examples from the Psalms to prove some of his points as though the Psalms are literal and doctrinal (eg. Romans 4:6-8 "just as David proclaims the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.” Is this blessing only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised?) Notice the wording of Paul here. He doesn't debate whether David was right or wrong or whether God agreed with David's blessing or not, when David proclaimed this blessing Paul took it for granted that the blessing was a real one from God. It does not seem unreasonable to conclude that Paul would have felt the same way about the other Psalms as well. Whether it's Paul or Jesus, none of them doubted scripture.

The psalm is about the literal experiences of Israel. Israel was literally taken into captivity by Babylon and literally had their children killed. To try and say the psalm is "metaphorical" is simply to deny history.

The psalm does not read like a metaphor. If you compare it to Daniel for example which talks mystical beasts and then adds that each beast represents a king or a ruler, or talks about a statue made of gold and silver and says that the different portions are different kingdoms, or if you compare it to Revelation where it talks in riddles, none of this is anything like the way Psalms reads. There is no talk of something representing something else and no talk of parables. The closest you might get is when it says something like "the Israelites will be guided like sheep to green pastures", which is metaphorical, but here David simply says "They killed our children. Blessed is the one that does what they've done to us, right back to them." It reads like an actual, literal prayer.

A warning to Christians

The typical Christian reply to all this would be to desperately run away from this verse and madly cling onto some other Bible passage (eg. "love your enemies"/"turn the other cheek"/"love thy neighbour" etc.) and then say "Forget about all the nasty bits. Look, this passage here says "turn the other cheek" and that shows God's values. Therefore God would never kill children and David contradicted God". However this argument doesn't work, and I will explain why.

Imagine two people are talking about Ted Bundy and each person can quote different things Ted Bundy said. Person A says "Ted Bundy once said that love and peace is the answer to all life's questions". Person B replies "Nice quote. Did you know that Ted Bundy also said that everyone has the right to kill babies? In fact Ted Bundy sometimes killed babies himself." Person A gets upset about this and replies "No. You are wrong to say that Ted Bundy would ever justify killing babies. Just look at this quote where he said love and peace is the answer to all life's problems! This quote proves that he valued love and peace, not killing children."
