Urgent Update on Signal App Debacle and US Gov funding By US Agency for Global Media AKA VOA.
The media loosing their mind and making this a bigger story than what it seems. What they failed to mention is Signal was government funded secure communication app and they have backdoor access to every text message.
Signal originated from Whisper Systems, founded in 2010 by Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson. Their TextSecure and RedPhone apps, for encrypted texting and calls, merged into Signal by 2014 after Marlinspike formed Open Whisper Systems in 2013, post a Twitter acquisition in 2011. The Signal Protocol powers its respected end-to-end encryption.
Signal’s link to intelligence agencies stems from funding Open Whisper Systems got about $3 million from 2013 to 2016 from the Open Technology Fund (OTF), a U.S. government-backed group tied to Radio Free Asia (RFA). RFA, once CIA-funded in the 1950s, is now under the U.S. Agency for Global Media, supporting "internet freedom" tools for activists, aligning with U.S. policy.
Below you will see the total funding for OTF through out the years by USAGM and also some software contracts that allows the US gov to archive the cloud for WhatsApp and Signal.
