Jeremy Hunt Tax Loophole
Jeremy Hunt bought seven flats to avoid paying higher stamp duty rates, exploiting a tax loophole that exempts bulk purchases of six or more properties from the higher rate. This loophole was introduced in 2016, where those buying a second home or buy-to-let property pay a 3% surcharge on stamp duty. By purchasing seven homes in one transaction, Hunt saved at least £94,500 in tax.
Hunt's purchase was made in an upmarket development in Ocean Village, Southampton, where other properties are on the market for between £450,000 and £1 million.
He has since pledged to pay more capital gains tax on his properties, acknowledging the public concern over his property investments.
The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner opened an inquiry into Hunt after he failed to initially register his interest in the company he used to buy the flats with parliamentary authorities.
He claimed the breaches were due to an "honest mistake" by his accountant and that he had corrected the listing at Companies House after being alerted to it by a member of the public.
