Ukraine and US lost ‘5–0’ in talks with Russia – ex-senior Ukrainian diplomat

Many of Kiev’s key objectives were never met, according to its former envoy to the EU

The recent negotiations between Moscow and Washington in Saudi Arabia were a total defeat for both Ukraine and the US,Konstantin Eliseev, Kiev’s former permanent representative to the EU, has said, arguing that his country’s critical points of concern were ignored.

In an interview with NV outlet on Friday, Eliseev weighed in on this week’s talks in Riyadh, which were aimed at restoring the 2022 Black Sea grain export deal. While Moscow has agreed in principle to start providing safe maritime corridors for Ukrainian food exports, it made clear that it would only support the deal if the West lifts sanctions on its financial institutions, particularly by reconnecting the Russian Agricultural Bank to the SWIFT payment system.

“Perhaps I’ll disappoint some people but we — and I mean we along with the Americans — lost these negotiations completely. I would say 5–0, one ball after another into our net. We lost. Let’s be honest,” the former envoy lamented.

He argued that Ukrainian interests were left off the table entirely. Chief among his concerns was the absence of any guarantees related to the security of Ukrainian ports. “The issue of ports was not protected from attacks in any way,” he said.

He warned of a broader trend toward concessions to Moscow, citing early signals of sanctions relief. “There are already hints about removing some Russian banks from [restrictions in] the SWIFT system,” he said. “And that is very bad.”

Eliseev added that Russia’s ability to strike Ukrainian targets from naval vessels was not restricted in the talks. He also noted the lack of inclusion of the principle of “all-for-all” prisoner exchanges, something Ukraine has long insisted on. Throughout the conflict, Moscow and Kiev have periodically engaged in POW swaps, with the exact number and composition always negotiated beforehand.

Another major concern was the exclusion of Ukraine’s EU backers from the negotiation process. “Unfortunately — and with the silent backing of the Americans — the Russians have managed to push our European partners away from the negotiating table,” Eliseev said.

While Moscow has insisted on sanctions relief as a precondition for the maritime ceasefire, the EU has rejected the possibility, insisting that restrictions will remain in place until Russia fully withdraws its troops from all territory claimed by Ukraine.

At the same time, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that there “would be a long discussion about many things in terms of the proper way to bring Russia back into the international system,” signaling that the issue of sanctions could be on the table.

US demands French contractors abandon DEI policies – media

The French Economic Ministry has reportedly pushed back by saying that the values of the Trump administration were not those of Paris

Washington has requested thatFrench companies working for the US government end all their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programsin order to comply with the policies of President Donald Trump, media outlets Le Figaro and Les Echos have reported.

An executive order “concerning the end of unlawful discrimination and restoring merit-based employment opportunities”signed by Trump is mandatory for “all suppliers and contractors” of the US government, regardless of their country of origin, the US embassy told French companies in a letter obtained by Le Figaro.

The US President had previously launched a campaign to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in all federal agencies. The fight against “woke policies,” such as the promotion of so-called gender reassignment treatment among minors, was a key part of Trump’s campaign. He signed multiple executive orders rolling back DEI initiatives after taking office.

In an order dated January 21, a day after his inauguration, the US president called DEI “an illegal, corrosive, and pernicious system” that goes against “our long-standing federal civil rights laws.”

According to the French media,each letter was accompanied by a “form of compliance” the contractors had to fill and send back within five days. The document required them to explicitly state they were “in compliance with all applicable federal anti-discrimination laws” of the US and to vow not to offer any DEI programs, Le Figaro said.

Otherwise, the companies were reportedly encouraged to provide the embassy with “detailed reasons” for not filling the form.

According to Le Figaro, it is unclear how many companies received the letter. The embassy itself has not confirmed sending it. Instead, the US diplomats said that “measures were taken by the administration put an end to decades of waste, fraud, and abuse,” adding thatthe diplomatic mission reviewed a total of 15,600 contracts, loans and foreign aid programs.

The move reportedly sparked an uproar within the government of France. “This practice reflects the values of the new American government. They are not ours,” a senior French Economy and Finance Ministry official told Le Figaro, adding that MinisterEric Lombard would “remind his counterparts within the American government of this.”

EU to reject Russia-US Black Sea deal – von der Leyen

The economic restrictions are “painful” for Moscow and “represent a powerful lever,” according to the European Commission president

The EU will not lift its sanctions against Russia for as long as the Ukraine conflict continues, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said. (That’s the point Lying, to end the conflict asap)

During talks in Saudi Arabia on Monday, Russia and the US agreed to move towards reviving the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which, according to the Kremlin, should include the removal of Western restrictions against Russian Agricultural Bank and other financial institutions involved in the international sale of food and fertilizers.

In her interview with French broadcaster LCI on Friday, von der Leyen made it clear thatBrussels will not support the idea of a maritime trucebetween Moscow and Kiev put forward by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

“The sanctions are very significant; they are painful; they have an impact on the Russian economy, and they represent a powerful lever,”she said when asked about the possibility of the EU fulfilling Russian demands to lift some of the curbs. According to the head of the European Commission, the restrictions “will remain in effect until a just and lasting peace is established in Ukraine.”

However, she noted that “when the war is over, the sanctionsmight be removed.”

Von der Leyen also said that for the conflict to end, “security guarantees for Ukraine” are needed as well as “a solid defense industrial base and a deterrent force” in the EU.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, originally brokered in July 2022 by the UN and Türkiye, envisioned the safe passage of Ukrainian agricultural products in exchange for the West lifting its restrictions on Russian grain and fertilizer exports.

Moscow withdrew from the deal a year later, citing the West’s failure to uphold its obligations. The Americans and Russians now see its revival as a step towards settling the Ukraine conflict altogether.

Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin asserted thatthe Russian economy has become the fourth largest in the world in purchasing power parity terms after those of China, the US and India, despite a record 28,595 sanctionsbeing placed on it by Washington, Brussels and their allies. According to the Russian government’s data, the country’s economy grew 4.1% in 2024, surpassing the official forecast of 3.9%.

Putin previously urged the Russian business circles against expecting the sanctions to be fully lifted, describing them as a mechanism of strategic systemic pressure on the country that the West intends to keep using.

EU to reduce agricultural imports from Ukraine – AFP

The current “emergency” free-trade regime for Kiev is due to expire in June, according to Brussels

The EU plans to scale down its imports of Ukrainian farm produce, the bloc’s commissioner for agriculture Christophe Hansen has told AFP.

An “emergency” scheme that allowed Kiev to sell such goods to the bloc without any tariffs is slated to end in June, as its member states no longer want to extend it, he explained.

Brussels suspended tariffs and quotas for Ukrainian agricultural produce after the start of the Russian military operation against Kiev in February 2022. The stated goal was to enable grain and other farm products from Ukraine to be shipped to global markets.However, these imports ended up flooding Eastern European countries, sparking waves of farmer protests.

Now, the bloc is expected to review its emergency scheme, according to Hansen.“Import quotas won't remain the same as in this temporary liberalization. So, indeed, there will be fewer imports,” he told the news agency in an interview on Friday.

The commissioner urged the bloc’s member states to find a substitute solution before the expiration date. “Discussions will have to be swift. The European Union is ready to negotiate, and it should happen in the coming weeks,” he said, without revealing whether Brussels has any specific plans regarding the issue.

It is still “clear” that the EU members do not want the free-trade regime for Kiev to be extended any further, Hansen admitted. “We've seen that this has caused problems, especially in certain member states.”

Several Eastern European nations, including Poland and Bulgaria, which faced the most massive farmer protests,have repeatedly threatened to take unilateral measures against Ukrainian agricultural importsat the national level if their concerns are not addressed. Sofia called for an outright ban on Ukrainian eggs in September 2024.

Russian soldiers have discovered the crest of the prestigious UK school that taught Britain’s King Charles III on a Ukrainian fighter killed in Kursk Region, western Russia, RIA Novosti reported on Saturday.

Gordonstoun is a private boarding senior school in Moray, Scotland, and maintains sailing as a key element of its curriculum.It is the alma mater of both Charles and his late father Prince Philip.

The school’s coat of arms and ‘Gordonstoun Sail Training’ could be seen emblazoned on the soldier’s fleece in a video taken by Russian assault forces from the 22nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of army grouping ‘North’, and given to the news agency.Clothing marked this way is not generally available for sale except to students of the institution. Boris Johnson has urged European nations to increase defense spending

Europeans should not be “deluded” that there is an alternative “defense pillar” to NATO, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. In an article in the Daily Mail on Friday, he argued that European countries should allocate more funds to defense.

The Atlantic reported this week, citing a conversation in the encrypted messaging app Signal, that US Vice President J.D. Vance said he hated “bailing out Europe again” by launching military action against Houthi rebels, ostensibly to protect European trade. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly also slammed “pathetic European free-loading.”

In his article, Johnson pointed out that theUS defense budget “is the thick end of a trillion dollars a year, more than 12 times the UK defense budget,even though the US population is only about five times bigger than ours.” He added that “the US allocates about 3.5 per cent of its GDP to defense while the UK spends about 2.3 per cent.”

Just prior to taking office in January, US President Donald Trump called on European NATO allies to increase their military spending, calling on each member state to spend 5% of GDP on defense. UK Prime Minister KeirStarmer announced that British defense spending would rise to 2.5% by 2027, three years earlier than planned. Meanwhile, EU countries have announced their own defense strategy aimed at breaking security dependency on the US.

Johnson opined in the Mail that there is no candidate for replacing America’s role on the continent.“We must not be deluded into thinking we can create some European alternative defence pillar, as a substitute for Nato. Who would lead such a thing? France? Britain? Germany? You only have to ask the question to see the problem,” he wrote. ONE of Vladimir Putin's limousines exploded and caught fire in Moscow as the tyrant orders sewers to be searched and the pat down of his own guards.An Aurus limousine from Putin's "official car fleet" blew up in a huge blast on a street just north of Moscow's FSB secret service headquarters in Lubyanka.

Footage showed that the fire which started in the engine of the £275,000 Aurus Senat had spread to the interior of the vehicle.Workers from nearby restaurants and bars had poured into the Sretenka Street to try to help before fire services arrived.

Stunned onlookers watched on as black smoke billowed out of the front of the destroyed vehicle as the fire continued to rage.Footage taken from another angle appeared to show that the rear of the vehicle was also damaged.

Reports did not reveal who was using the car - believed to be owned by Putin’s Presidential Property Management Department - when the shocking incident occurred.

And no report has been made about what may have caused the sudden blaze but those inside the car were not injured. Putin, 72, routinely uses the Russian-made carsand has gifted the limousines, for example to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

The incident comes as the tyrant continues to display intense paranoia about assassination plots.Extraordinary footage from a few days ago, showed servicemen from a ceremonial guard in Murmansk being individually bodysearched by a Federal Protection Service [FSO] officer.

Last summer, reports claimed that the paranoid despot had started wearing bulletproof vests to public appearances as he increasingly fears being taken out over the war in Ukraine or by Islamic terrorists.

The Kremlin is on “heightened" alert over its invasion of Ukraine - but is also “rattled” by attacks on high-ranking politicians in Europe and Asia.

A government watchdog group is calling for the job of an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official who played a part in a major-Obama era scandal at the agency before being promoted by the Biden administration now runs a key division of the tax collection agency.

Holly Paz was former IRS Commissioner Lois Lerner’s top deputy at the agency as Lerner and the Obama IRS allegedly targeted political opponents, and she is currently listed on the IRS website as the commissioner of the agency’s Large Business and International Division. The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) — a right-of-center government watchdog group — called for Paz’s job given her connections to an infamous instance of the federal government treating American taxpayers differently based on political affiliation, according to a letter sent Thursday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“The American Accountability Foundation has launched an investigation into the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for issues pertaining to partisanship and its continued targeting of conservatives,” AAF wrote in its letter to Bessent. “Our first finding of this investigation is that the former top deputy to Louis Lerner — Holly Paz — regained a high-ranking position within the IRS during the Biden Administration. Paz was placed on leave and ousted from her role at the IRS in 2013 amid allegations she targeted conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status.”

“With allegations that the IRS maintains political bias and is still targeting conservatives, Paz cannot be allowed to maintain a role in the IRS,” the letter concludes. “Taxpayers deserve to have faith in those that receive a government salary and Paz has proved undeserving of the honor to serve the American public. The American Accountability Foundation will continue to investigate IRS leadership and implores the Trump administration to root out any anti-conservative partisan bias at the IRS.”

The Large Business and International Division — which Paz currently oversees — is “responsible for tax administration activities for domestic and foreign businesses with a United States tax reporting requirement and assets equal to or exceeding $10 million as well as the Global High Wealth and International Individual Compliance programs,” according to the IRS.

The Tea Party scandal centered around allegations that the Obama IRS subjected conservative organizations seeking tax-exempt status to extensive scrutiny that was not applied equally to progressive groups applying for the same, with the IRS ultimately apologizing in 2017 for its conduct.

Paz was a top deputy to Lerner at the IRS until she was replaced in 2013 following the Tea Party controversy. She appears to have re-joined the agency sometime during the Biden administration.

During her first stint at the IRS, Paz personally reviewed between 20 and 30 “Tea Party” applications. Many of the applications Paz reviewed were effectively put on hold for more than a year.

Paz — who once donated thousands to the 2008 Obama campaign — testified to congressional investigators in May 2013 that “political campaign intervention in 501(c)(4)s was not something we had previously dealt with very much” at the IRS, according to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. That testimony conflicted with an internal IRS email discovered by investigators in which Paz wrote that she expected the IRS to approve applications of most Tea Party groups because “this is not a new issue for the agency.”

Additionally, Paz told investigators that “Tea Party” was a catch-all phrase for political organizations seeking tax-exempt status, not unlike “Kleenex” being used as a catch-all colloquial phrase to describe tissues, according to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. However, several other employees at the Cincinnati IRS office disputed that testimony, with one of the employees telling investigators that applications of liberal or left-wing groups seeking tax-exempt status were not put into “general inventory” or otherwise scrutinized excessively.

Republican investigators also highlighted other inconsistencies in Paz’s testimony, such as the timelines she offered for when D.C.-based IRS personnel became aware of controversial changes to the agency’s “be on the lookout” list and when she herself became aware of inappropriate targeting of Tea Party groups, according to the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

Scoop: Ilhan Omar plots to impeach Signalgate officialsl

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is privately proposing articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: It would be the most escalatory Democratic response yet to Signalgate, in which a journalist was mistakenly added to a Signal chat in which top Trump officials discussed military strikes in Yemen.

What we're hearing: The high-profile progressive has been pushing the idea of impeachment among fellow House Democrats, a senior House Democrat and another source familiar with the matter told Axios.

• The senior lawmaker told Axios it is "all being discussed."

• A Democrat leadership aide told Axios that Hegseth should be fired — the step that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has called for.

Zoom out:Waltz apparently added Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the chat, in which Hegseth shared highly sensitive details about military operations against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

• Some Democrats have accused Ratcliffe and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard of lying to the Senate Intelligence Committee this week by testifying that they did not believe the chat contained classified information.

• A growing number of Democrats have called for Trump officials to be ousted in response to the scandal, but the administration has been defiant and maintained that no classified information was shared.

Between the lines:Omar could, in theory, force the vote on her own without the assent of Democratic or Republican leadership, through what is known as a privileged motion.

• The mechanism was used and threatened numerous times in the last Congress to push censure, expulsion and impeachment votes.

• It is not clear whether Omar will do that or simply introduce articles of impeachment. Her office did not respond to a request for comment.

Reality check: Any Democratic impeachment effort would be a heavy lift in the House, where Republicans hold a narrow majority.

• In the Senate, conviction and removal is a near-impossiblity. It would require 67 votes, and Republicans control the chamber.

•A second Democratic leadership source said it is an "unlikely scenario" that impeachment will be used as a Democratic tool as long as Republicans control the House.

Trump signs order for increased police, more concealed carry in Washington DC

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday aimed at satisfying his long-held demand for increased law enforcement in Washington, D.C. and expediting applications by "law-abiding citizens" to carry concealed weapons.

Trump's order establishes a task force that he directed to surge law enforcement officers into the city, strengthen pre-trial detention of crime suspects and crack down on people who evade subway fares.

According to the D.C. Police Department, violent crime in 2024 was 35% lower than in 2023. For overall crime, it went down 15% in 2024 compared to 2023. For 2025, violent crime was as of this month 27% lower than in 2024 and overall crime was 9% lower than in 2024. (Lying)

The Washington Post reported in early March that the city had seen 30 homicides so far in 2025, an 11% increase year-over-year.

Trump's aim, a White House fact sheet said, "is to make Washington, D.C. what it should be - the pride of every American to whom it belongs."

Trump has long complained about homeless encampments and crime in the capital. His order established a task force made up of officials from various government agencies to take his demands on board, including deporting illegal migrants.(like no one else complained?)

It was unclear how he would go about expediting concealed gun permits. According to the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, residents and non-residents, who are at least 21 years old and take a firearms training course, can obtain concealed carry licenses.

The capital city's mayor, Muriel Bowser, told NPR recently that she has cleared many homeless encampments but that Trump "doesn't think there should be any homeless person in the nation's capital."

She also complained about the Trump-ordered layoffs at various federal departments headquartered in Washington

"How to make Washington D.C. the most beautiful city in the world? You don't make a city beautiful by gutting its workforce. You don't make a city beautiful by leaving buildings vacant. The actions of the federal government are working against our ability to invest in our city," she said.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) thinks the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is largely ineffective and is hoping most of his colleagues in the Senate agree.

Tuberville and U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) introduced the “Abolish TSA Act,” which would dissolve the bloated TSA under a new Office of Aviation Security Oversight.

“The TSA has become an inefficient, bureaucratic mess that infringes on Americans’ freedoms and wastes taxpayer money,” Tuberville said. “It’s a bloated agency that offers minimal security benefits while causing unnecessary delays and frustration for travelers.We need to focus on smarter, more effective methods to protect our country without sacrificing the liberties that make America great. The TSA should be eliminated and replaced with more targeted, streamlined, and accountable solutions.”

According to a 2015 assessment found that TSA agents missed 95% of mock explosives and banned weapons during checkpoint screenings. The 95% failure rate was repeated in 2017 at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport and repeat national tests that year were “in the ballpark” of 80% failure rates.

The legislation outlines the goal to “privatize all commercial airport security to increase cost-efficiency and security.” It also directs the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Transportation to make a reorganization plan and submit it to Congress.

The senators believe U.S. airports should be more in line with Europe where over 80% of commercial airportsthere are use privatized airport security screening.

The reorganization plancannot include requirements for private security companies to conduct warrantless searches and seizures or extend the TSA’s existence.

According to Tuberville’s office, Congress will consider, amend, vote up or down on the reorganization plan through expedited and privileged procedure. Compliance will be monitored by the GAO and regular reports to Congress.
