Recap of the POTUS/European commission press conference for those who missed it.

 

  • POTUS calls out a bunch of individual senators and thanks them individual for coming. Seems pleasantly surprised by the amount of representation, although clearly has a prepared list of those in attendance.

  • We had BIG DAY, very big.

  • Met with EU to launch a new phase in the relationship and trade relationships between them and the US in which "both of us will win" and for "fighting jointly against terrorism."

  • "Together we are more than 50% of trade."

  • We currently have the largest bilateral trade relationship in the world, worth 1 TRILLION DOLLARS.

  • Working towards ZERO tariffs, ZERO subsidies on non-auto industrial goods, and ZERO non-tariff barriers.

  • Working to reduce barriers and increase trade in the areas of: services, chemicals, pharma, medical products, and SOY BEANS (it's a big deal)

  • EU is going to start, almost immediately, to buy a lot of soy beans from our farmers, primarily in the Mid West.

  • Strengthening in ENERGY

  • EU will import more liquefied natural gas from the US, they will be a "Massive buyer." We'll make it easier for them to buy.

  • Launching a close dialogue on standards in order to ease trade, reduce beauracratic obstacles, and slash costs dramatically.

  • Will reform WTO and address unfair trading practices, including IP theft, forced tech transfer, industrial subsidies, distortions created by state owned enterprises

  • Set up immediately a working group to advise and carry out above agenda

  • Parties can still terminate, negotiations beginning

  • Resolving steel and aluminum tariffs.

  • Jean Claude, president of EU, says he always had the intention of making a deal and has made a deal today.

  • Jean Claude says we will be going down to zero tariffs on industrial goods.

  • When talking about the huge uptick in buying our natural gas, he said "this is also a message for others."

  • Agreed to addressing standards and WTO reform.

  • Will hold off on further tariffs and reassess existing tariffs. "This was a good and constructive meeting."

 

POTUS: This was a VERY BIG day for FREE….and FAIR…trade.
