The word "Jew" does not appear in the Bible until late in the Old Testament and that word actually doesn't even appear except by translation. If one of the tribes was referred to as "Judah" and the Germans used the translation "Jude" when speaking of Jews then it's not a big leap to see where the word "Jew" came from. I think the term "Gentile" probably refers to anyone who is not of the lineage of Jacob/Israel. I'm not a historian but this is my understanding.
