European Union ready to penalize Elon Musk $1 billion for not censoring opposition voices and for “disinformation” violations on X.

The European Union is poised to fine Elon Musk's social media platform X a record $1 billion after it broke landmark laws combatting illicit content and disinformation, sources told The New York Times.

The move will likely ratchet up tensions with the U.S. as it targets one of President Donald Trump's closest advisers. The penalties will reportedly include a fine and demands for product changes.

The penalties will reportedly be announced this summer and will be the first under the new EU law intended to force social media companies to police their platforms.

"We had a great relationship during my time in the White House, and it will be even stronger this time around!" U.S. President Donald Trump crowed after meeting with Qatari leader Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in September 2024, a few months before the U.S. election. "Mounting evidence shows that close aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have, unbeknownst to the Israeli public, been working directly or indirectly for Qatar, the country that funded Hamas as it was planning the murderous rampage of October 7.

Netanyahu's desire to disrupt law enforcement's investigation into Qatargate has been frequently cited as a reason for his recent intensive efforts to fire both Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Shin Bet Head Ronen Bar."

Qatar has been a conduit whereby Israel funded and directed Hamas on Oct 7, 2023

Israel Seizes Rafah In Expanded Operation, Hundreds Of Thousands Flee

The Israeli military (IDF) has expanded its Gaza operations over the last 24 hours, and has announced a new focus on establishing a "security zone" in an around the southern city of Rafah.

The push into Rafah is intended to dismantle all remaining Hamas infrastructure and command activity, given the city is seen as the group's last main stronghold in the Gaza Strip.

This has unleashed a new wave of mass displacement, with reports of hundreds of thousands fleeing the city amid the assault. The enclave for more than the last year been even more crowded, given it has served as a last place of refuge for the displaced from northern and central Gaza.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir visited Gaza this week, delivering the following message of intensified operations to get back all of the remaining hostages:

During the visit, Zamir addressed troops near Rafah, stating that the Israel Defense Forces are intensifying their offensive at a deliberate and determined pace. He emphasized that the military effort would continue until all Israeli hostages are returned and declared the mission far from over.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry has announced at least 97 people killed in Israeli strikes from Wednesday into Thursday, including at least 20 killed in a dawn airstrike on a suburb of Gaza City.

According to a Palestinian eyewitness of the stepped up assault who spoke to Reuters:

Rafah "is gone, it is being wiped out," a father of seven among the hundreds of thousands who had fled from Rafah to neighboring Khan Younis, told Reuters via a chat app.

"They are knocking down what is left standing of houses and property," said the man who declined to be identified for fear of repercussions.

A ground assault on eastern Gaza City is also reported to be ongoing. This week has seen the heaviest escalation of the ground and aerial assault since the ceasefire collapsed last month.

Meanwhile controversy and international outraged has continued over the recent killings of a group of Palestinian emergency responders:

The Israeli military killed 15 medics and emergency workers in southern Gaza and buried the bodies with their ambulances and rescue vehicles last month.

Dr Ahmed al-Farra, director of pediatrics at Al-Tahreer Maternity Hospital in southern Khan Younis, saw the bodies coming into the medical facility after they were recovered a week later. He said Israeli soldiers would have easily seen they were targeting medics when they opened fire.

"The skies are filled with their planes, they can see a needle on the ground. So they could easily distinguish ambulances," al-Farra told Al Jazeera.

"When the bodies came to the hospital, they were nearly decomposed. It had been around seven to eight days since the medics were executed. I saw three of them had their hands tied behind their backs."

Major Australian superannuation funds targeted in cyberattack, with some customers believed to have savings drained from accounts

Major Australian superannuation funds have been targeted in a cyberattack which is believed to have drained savings from some customers' accounts.

Many of Australia’s largest superannuation funds were targeted by a coordinated cyberattack that stripped customers’ accounts of some retirement savings by a criminal enterprise.

Retail worker fund REST, hospitality industry fund Hostplus, Insignia Financial’s MLC, the nation’s largest fund AustralianSuper and Australian Retirement Trust have all been attacked.

AustralianSuper confirmed cyber criminals used upwards of 600 members’ stolen passwords to log into their accounts in attempts to commit fraud.

The fund’s chief member officer Rose Kerlin said AustralianSuper took “immediate action to lock these accounts and let members know”.

“Over the past week, we have seen a spike in suspicious activity across our member portal and mobile app and we are urging members to take steps to protect themselves online,” Ms Kerlin said in a statement.

However, it is understood the breach resulted in some customers losing retirement savings, The Australian Financial Review reported.

An AustralianSuper spokesperson said the fund has experienced intermittent outages after a high volume of traffic was directed to its call centre, member online accounts and mobile app.

"Even though you may not be able to see your account, or you are seeing a $0 balance, your account is secure," the spokesperson said.

"This is a temporary situation and we’re working hard to resolve it as quickly as possible."

A spokesperson for Australian Retirement Trust said there were attempts to access hundreds of accounts, but no savings were stolen.

“We can confirm our digital security system identified unusual login activity and that impacted accounts were locked as a precaution, and members and regulators were notified,” the spokesperson said.

“We have not identified any suspicious transactions or modifications regarding these accounts.”

One per cent of Rest members – about 20,000 – were hit by the cyberattacks, according to its CEO Vicki Doyle who noted no money had been taken out of their accounts.

“Over the weekend of 29-30 March 2025, Rest became aware of some unauthorised activity on our online Member Access portal," Ms Doyle said, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

Bill Murray caught on camera snapping at pushy fan

Just one day after he made headlines for forcibly kissing Naomi Watts on TV, Bill Murray has been filmed snapping at a fan out in public.

Bill Murray is having a week.

Just one day after the US actor copped backlash for forcibly kissing co-star Naomi Watts on TV, Murray has been filmed snapping at a pushy fan in a heated public encounter.

In a video going viral on X, the Ghostbusters star, 74, could be seen being hounded by someone in what appeared to be a shopping centre, before the fan stood on Murray’s foot.

An incensed Murray turned around and yelled, “You attack me like that again, I’ll step on your foot,” as he pointed his finger at the unidentified person.

Security intervened, ushering Murray away as the actor accused the fan of “assault”, before repeatedly saying, “Don’t do it again.”

The video has been viewed more than two million times on social media as of Friday morning.

User reaction to the clip is fairly mixed, with some levelling the blame at the fan for getting in Murray’s space.

Others, however, thought Murray overreacted.

“You got your foot nudged in a crowd and called it assault? Be serious,” one wrote.

“Grumpy old bird. he’s lucky anyone interested in following him at all,” another added.

“Bill Murray is hilarious but he’s also a known POS. Not surprised he’d act like this,” a third said.

It comes after Murray’s actions on US talk show Watch What Happens Live earlier this week were dubbed “gross” and “humiliating”, after he grabbed Watts’ face and planted a kiss on her.
