Mel Gibson's Right to Own Guns Restored by Justice Dept.

The U.S. Justice Department will allow actor Mel Gibson to own guns again, despite his 2011 conviction on a domestic violence charge, The New York Times reported Thursday.

The Times, citing unnamed sources familiar with the Justice Department decision, reported that Gibson, a strong supporter of President Donald Trump, was among nine other people whose right to own a gun would be restored. Their names will soon be published in the Federal Register.

Federal law bars most people convicted of domestic abuse from owning a firearm.

Gibson was sentenced by a California judge to three years of probation 14 years ago on a misdemeanor charge for hitting his then girlfriend. Gibson pleaded no contest to the charge as part of a plea deal to avoid jail time.

A representative for Gibson said he had no immediate comment. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House directed a request for comment to the Justice Department.

The Times reported that the issue over Gibson's gun rights caused strife within the Justice Department because Elizabeth Oyer, a pardon attorney for the department, had last month refused to agree to restore the actor's right to own a gun. She was fired the next day.

Oyer, in an interview with the Times, said she had been told by a senior Justice Department leader that Gibson's right to own a weapon should be restored based on the fact that he had a personal relationship with the president.

Oyer said her refusal to agree was not a political decision, but based on her not having done a background investigation into Gibson's case and because she considered a domestic violence conviction to be extremely worrying.

Trump, a few days before his inauguration in January, named Gibson, along with the actors Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight, as "special ambassadors" to Hollywood.

Senate Republicans Vote to Advance Sweeping Trump Tax Cut Plan

https://www.newsmax.com/politics/capitol-republicans-tax-cut/2025/04/03/id/1205602/

Senate Republicans took a procedural step forward on President Donald Trump's sweeping tax cut agenda on Thursday, overcoming concerns among some Republican lawmakers that the plan does not include sufficient spending cuts.

The Senate voted 52-48 to move forward with the framework to address Trump's proposals for tax cuts, border enforcement and increased military spending, which nonpartisan analysts warn could add $5.8 trillion to the federal government's debt over the next decade.

Lawmakers hope to pass the resolution after up to 50 hours of floor debate, and send it on to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

Both chambers must approve the same budget resolution to unlock a key parliamentary tool that would allow Republicans to circumvent Senate Democrats and enact the Trump agenda later this year.

That could take several months.

Thursday's vote came a day after the White House assured congressional Republicans that Trump supported their desire to include deep spending cuts in the bill.

The Senate Budget Committee plan estimates the cost of extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts, as well as delivering on sweeping new promises to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security retirement payments, at $1.5 trillion over a decade. That is far below the $4.5 trillion cost estimated in a blueprint that passed the House in February.

The Senate and House cost estimates differ because Senate Republicans intend to use a controversial approach that claims extending the 2017 tax cuts will not add to the nation's debt.

Top Senate Republican John Thune, of South Dakota, huddled before the vote with fellow Republicans to address concerns about that controversial approach. Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, who attended the closed-door meeting, said leaders assuaged worries including whether Republicans would try to overrule the Senate parliamentarian, the chamber's gatekeeper on rules, if she opposed the move later in the year when legislation to enact the Trump agenda reaches the Senate floor.

"I think the answer to that is, 'no,'" Cornyn told reporters.

The Senate measure also calls for a $5 trillion increase in the borrowing limit on the $36.6 trillion debt, which Republicans say will prevent the issue from coming up again until after the 2026 midterm elections.

The Senate blueprint contains an aspirational goal of cutting $2 trillion in spending from domestic programs that increased during the COVID pandemic, as a way of winning House support.

But House Republicans have voiced skepticism about the blueprint, citing enforceable spending-cut goals that seek only a few billion dollars in spending reductions.

Democrats have warned that lawmakers will have a hard time achieving their $2 trillion spending-cut goal without cutting deeply into the Medicaid health insurance plan for low-income Americans.

China to Retaliate With 34% Tariffs Starting April 10

China Friday announced a slew of additional tariffs and restrictions against U.S. goods as a countermeasure to sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Finance Ministry said it would impose additional tariffs of 34% on all U.S. goods from April 10.

Beijing also announced controls on exports of medium and heavy rare-earths, including samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium and yttrium to the United States, effective April 4.

"The purpose of the Chinese government's implementation of export controls on relevant items in accordance with the law is to better safeguard national security and interests, and to fulfill international obligations such as non-proliferation," the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.

It also added 11 entities to the "unreliable entity" list, which allows Beijing to take punitive actions against foreign entities.

When do you think he'll reveal these 'findings'?

That work, Trump added, found something "horrible" and "incredible" today, but he would not divulge further details to reporters.

Forever 21, Hooters, and 7 other restaurant and retail chains going bankrupt right now

https://qz.com/hooters-big-lots-macys-joann-bankrupt-retail-inflation-1851766620

March 17, 2025

2024 was a tough year for retailers and restaurants across the U.S., and 2025 may present a similarly challenging landscape.

Coresight Research, a retail and technology data platform, predicts an escalation this year, with around 15,000 stores expected to shutdown. Among the notable closures are some major names like Hooters and Big Lots (BIG).

โ€œInflation and a growing preference among consumers to shop online to find the cheapest deals took a toll on brick-and-mortar retailers in 2024,โ€ said Coresight Research CEO Deborah Weinswig. She noted that retailers who failed to adapt their supply chains and implement cost-cutting technologies were hit the hardest, as consumers increasingly opted for the convenience of online shopping, turning to e-commerce giants like Amazon (AMZN), Temu, and Shein.

In 2024, U.S. store closures reached 7,325 โ€“ the highest number on record since 2020. At the same time, store openings totaled 5,970, marking the highest figure since 2012. Despite this, closures outpaced openings, resulting in a net loss of 1,355 stores last year.

2025 could be eerily similar. Several major retailers have already announced significant closures and bankruptcy filings. Big Lots plans to close 601 stores, while Party City, which filed for bankruptcy, will shut down 738 locations. Other companies, including Forever 21 are also among the growing list of brands going bankrupt.

Despite the closures, new store openings are expected to remain steady. Companies like Aldi, JD Sports (JD), and Burlington Stores (BURL) are leading the way with new expansions in 2025. However, the overall trend suggests a tough year ahead for traditional retail. As consumers continue to shift to online shopping, retailers that embrace new technologies may be the ones to survive and avoid further closures.
