Bethel University’s Innovation Scholars partner with NASA to bring groundbreaking stethoscope technology to market
April 04, 2025 | 3:36 p.m.
What if a stethoscope could detect more than just your heartbeat?
Bethel University's Innovation Scholars team is helping make this vision a reality by assisting NASA Langley Research Center in bringing their groundbreaking Full-Spectrum Infrasonic Stethoscope to market.
This year, a group of four Bethel undergrad students from science, business, and economics backgrounds worked on crafting a commercialization strategy for a device that could revolutionize healthcare.
The team comprises of Daniel Herzog ‘24, a business marketing major with a minor in communication studies, Annika Soderlund ‘25, human resource major, Jack Hanson ’25, biochemistry and molecular biology major, and Emma Linnett ‘25, human bioenergetics major and biology minor.
In the Innovation Scholars program, students in cross-disciplinary teams, guided by MBA mentors, tackle real-world challenges in healthcare and entrepreneurship over the span of four months.
For Bethel's team, this meant taking two patents for NASA’s stethoscope and developing a go-to-market strategy for the device.
Unlike traditional stethoscopes that only capture audible frequencies, NASA's technology detects a much broader range, including infrasonic frequencies that are inaudible to the human ear.
This expanded range enables the early detection of diseases and abnormalities within the human body.
The stethoscope provides physicians with additional data by monitoring signals across the full frequency spectrum, including cardiac, carotid artery, and respiratory activities—features not available in conventional stethoscopes.
Certain physiological processes are reflected in distinct frequency bands, ranging from 0.01 Hz to 500 Hz. With this technology, physicians can monitor a patient's physiological conditions across the entire bandwidth, offering a more comprehensive view of health.

Department of Defense completes Underway Recovery Test 12 with NASA
April 4, 2025
NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Landing and Recovery team and the Department of Defense successfully completed the third recovery test for the crewed Artemis II mission aboard amphibious transport dock USS Somerset (LPD 25) off the coast of San Diego, March 31.
The primary objectives for Underway Recovery Test 12 were to demonstrate and evaluate the processes, procedures, and hardware for recovery operations for the crewed Artemis II mission around the moon.
“The U.S. Navy and NASA have a long history of partnering together to support the recovery of astronauts and equipment used for space exploration and research,” said Capt. Andrew Koy, commanding officer, USS Somerset.
“The inherent capabilities of our amphibious transport dock ships are the perfect combination to ensuring the Artemis capsule and crew are safely recovered following their mission.
The well deck, flight deck, medical facilities, and immense cargo carrying capacity crewed by highlight trained and proficient Sailors, continues the NASA and Department of Defense legacy.”
Underway Recovery Test 12 allowed NASA and the Department of Defense to practice operational procedures for Artemis II, including timing of crew extraction from the capsule to the ship’s medical bay and day-and-night recovery procedures to support certification of personnel and processes for Artemis II mission.
Artemis II astronaut U.S. Navy Capt. Victor Glover embarked the ship for Underway Recovery Test 12.
“This puts my two loves together, space and the navy. I am really in my happy place here,” said Glover.
“The partnership between NASA and the U.S. Navy is a testament to a fostered symbiotic relationship built on trust, where our needs are met by their unparalleled expertise and resources.
Together, we’re not just working side by side; we’re one team! As we prepare to send the next group of explorers around the Moon and beyond, we’re pushing the boundaries of human achievement, all thanks to the strength of this incredible partnership.”
Working in support of U.S. Space Command, additional U.S. Navy units included Expeditionary Strike Group 3, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 23, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, and Amphibious Construction Battalion 1, with support from U.S. Air Force’s First Air Force, Detachment 3, and U.S. Space Force’s 45th Space Launch Delta Weather Squadron.
After the 2022 successful recovery of the Orion spacecraft from the Artemis I mission using amphibious transport dock USS Portland (LPD 27), and with the addition of crew for the Artemis II mission, the recovery teams modified their timelines and procedures to ensure the astronauts will be safely on the recovery ship within two hours after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.
After a 10-day mission, NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen will reenter Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 mph, landing approximately 60 miles off the coast of California, where one of the U.S. Navy’s amphibious transport dock ships will recover the capsule and crew with NASA and DoD personnel.
1/2
Once the crew splashes down, a group of Navy divers will approach Orion and ensure it is safe for the astronauts to exit the spacecraft.
The divers will then open the spacecraft hatch and help the astronauts exit one by one onto an inflatable “front porch.”
This raft wraps around the capsule and allows for the crew to be picked up via helicopter and flown back to the recovery ship.
Once the astronauts are on board the recovery ship, teams will secure Orion with a series of lines and tow it into the ship’s well-deck, just as they did during the Artemis I mission.
During the test, the team practiced the Artemis II recovery procedures, including releasing and recovering the crew module test article, a full-scale mock-up of Orion.
“As Navy Divers, we are proud members of the URT-12 team and look forward to a successful mission,” said Master Chief Navy Diver Ryan Crider, who leads the team of divers from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1 assigned to Underway Recovery Test 12.
“We are the Navy’s experts in mobile salvage and towing, so the unique task of recovering and transporting a space capsule from the ocean to a well deck is the perfect opportunity to put our skills to the test.”
The recovery team will capture lessons learned and apply them to future underway tests to make sure they are ready to recover the Artemis II crew and bring them home safely.
“Since 1959, First Air Force, Detachment 3 has collaborated with NASA and the US Navy, a partnership that has led to our critical role in preparing for Artemis,” said Lt. Col. Mahan, First Air Force, Detachment 3 Artemis Program director.
“With US Space Command, backed by the U.S. Navy, spearheading DoD human spaceflight support, and Air Forces Space serving as deputy, URT-12 has built a cohesive team committed to mission success.
This landmark joint effort is undoubtedly the pinnacle of our year!”
As the Department of Defense’s Human Space Flight Support manager, U.S. Space Command is responsible for the terrestrial rescue and recovery of NASA-sponsored astronauts and spacecraft for the Artemis program.
Expeditionary Strike Group 3 comprises three amphibious squadrons, 15 amphibious warships, and eight naval support elements including approximately 18,000 active-duty and reserve Sailors and Marines.
As the deputy commander for amphibious and littoral warfare, U.S. 3rd Fleet, the Expeditionary Strike Group 3 commander also oversees the 17 littoral combat ships under Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1.
Expeditionary Strike Group 3 is postured in support of U.S. 3rd Fleet as a globally responsive and scalable naval command element, capable of generating, deploying, and employing naval forces and formations for crisis and contingency response, forward presence, and major combat operations focusing on amphibious operations, humanitarian and disaster relief and support to defense civil authorities, and expeditionary logistics.

NASA Welcomes Gateway Lunar Space Station’s HALO Module to US
Apr 04, 2025
From Italy to Arizona: Gateway’s first habitation module takes a major step on its path to launch.
A core component of Gateway, humanity’s first space station around the Moon, is now on American soil and one step closer to launch.
In lunar orbit, Gateway will support NASA’s Artemis campaign to return humans to the Moon and chart a path of scientific discovery toward the first crewed missions to Mars.
Gateway’s first pressurized module and one of its two foundational elements, HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost), arrived in Arizona on April 1.
Fresh off a transatlantic journey from Thales Alenia Space in Turin, Italy, the structure will undergo final outfitting at Northrop Grumman’s integration and test facility in Gilbert before being integrated with Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The pair of modules will launch together on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Gateway’s HALO will provide Artemis astronauts with space to live, work, conduct scientific research, and prepare for missions to the lunar surface.
It will offer command and control, data handling, energy storage, electrical power distribution, thermal regulation, and communications and tracking via Lunar Link, a high-rate lunar communication system provided by ESA (European Space Agency).
The module will include docking ports for visiting vehicles such as NASA’s Orion spacecraft, lunar landers, and logistics modules.
It will also support both internal and external science payloads, enabling research and technology demonstrations in the harsh deep space environment.
Built with industry and international partners, Gateway will support sustained exploration of the Moon, serve as a platform for science and international collaboration, and act as a proving ground for the technologies and systems needed for future human missions to Mars.

Neither an astronaut nor an engineer, she was a mathematician who took NASA to the top – without her, NASA would never have put a satellite into orbit – Melba Roy Mouton
04/04/2025 14:30
Science tends to remember the names of those whose work echoes long after the lab coats are folded away—and Melba Roy Mouton is one of them.
As an African American woman making waves in both science and education, she left a legacy that still shines bright.
Born in 1929 in Fairfax, Virginia, Mouton came of age during a turning point in history, right between the aftermath of World War II and the start of the space race.
Instead of getting lost in the theoretical clouds, Mouton kept her feet firmly planted in the real-world math trenches.
She snagged both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Howard University, where she not only aced her courses but also got involved in Future Teachers of America.
A Numbers Whiz with Purpose
Driven by a deep sense of mission, she put her math chops to work at the Army Map Service and later at the Census Bureau.
There, she wasn’t just crunching numbers—she was charting the future, using data to track how the country was expanding and to help plan for what came next.
But it was her move to NASA that truly launched her career into orbit. In 1959, she joined the Goddard Space Flight Center, just in time for humanity’s first serious foray beyond the atmosphere.
There, Mouton took on the massive task of tracking and crunching data for some of the earliest space-bound objects, including the legendary Echo 1 satellite in 1960.
Thanks to her sharp data skills and uncanny knack for predicting orbital paths, she became a cornerstone of the early space program, where even the tiniest miscalculation could mean a mission going sideways—literally.
Consider what Echo 1 represented: it wasn’t just a shiny object floating around up there.
This balloon-like satellite was NASA’s very first experimental step into satellite communications.
It helped test out intercontinental radio, phone, and TV signals, proving that microwave communication from space was more than just sci-fi chatter.
A Life-Long Career
Mouton’s top-notch work didn’t go unnoticed. In 1973, she earned a well-deserved promotion to Assistant Chief of Research Programs in NASA’s Trajectory and Geodynamics Division.
One of her key roles? Overseeing the legendary human computers: a brilliant team of women who crunched numbers by hand to keep space missions on track.
These were the real MVPs before machines took over, calculating rocket paths with nothing but pencils, paper, and pure genius.
Fast-forward to 2016, and the film Hidden Figures finally gave these unsung heroines their time in the spotlight. Long before Hollywood came calling, though, NASA recognized their contributions.
In 1972, Mouton and several of her Black colleagues appeared in an ad in The Afro American newspaper, a clear nod to NASA’s effort to reflect the diversity of the minds powering their missions.
Turns out, Mouton didn’t just calculate trajectories—she helped chart a new course for inclusion, too.
A Leading Lady in Code
While many were still wrapping their heads around basic coding, Mouton was already bending APL to her will.
And here’s a fun twist—Tron, the groundbreaking 1982 Disney film, used that very same language to generate its trippy special effects.
So in a way, Mouton’s field of work helped take both astronauts and arcade warriors to new dimensions.
To honor her contributions, Mouton received the Apollo Achievement Award. But her legacy didn’t stop at Earth’s edge. In May 2022, a spot on the Moon was officially named Mons Mouton.
And the story gets even cooler: Mons Mouton is set to become the touchdown point for NASA’s upcoming VIPER mission (short for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover).
So, while Mouton may have worked behind the scenes during her lifetime, her name now literally shines on the Moon.

Rare colorful lightning caught on camera by ISS astronaut. 'OK, this is kind of out there'
April 4, 2025
NASA astronaut Don Pettit captured breathtaking video of a rare atmospheric phenomenon from his perch high above Earth on the International Space Station.
While the International Space Station (ISS) was orbiting above South America, Pettit recorded what are known as Transient Luminous Events, or TLEs.
These are bright, colorful flashes of light faster than lightning and are sometimes referred to as "sprites."
Pettit was able to view the sprites from directly above, looking down at what is known as the nadir, the point directly below a particular location.
"OK, this is kind of out there and caters to your inner Uber-Geek," Pettit posted to X (formerly Twitter along with the video. "Nadir view of Transient Luminous Events (TLE ) or upper atmospheric lightning."
The video captures around six seconds of sprites over the Amazon basin. And it's not the first time these phenomena have been caught on camera from the ISS.
In 2024, NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick caught a glimpse at one of the most elusive atmospheric phenomena known as red sprites.
These occur during particularly powerful thunderstorms and travel upwards into the atmosphere, as opposed to normal lightning which travels downward to the surface of Earth.
Sprites like the ones Pettit captured on video occur much higher than regular lightning. Their name is an acronym, short for stratospheric perturbations resulting from intense thunderstorm electrification.
Sprites are created when electrical discharges created by lightning shoot upward, creating bursts of plasma in the ionosphere, found around 50 miles (80 km) above Earth's surface. They were not captured on camera until 1989.

Origin Of First Contact Day Explained
Apr 3, 2025
Ahead of First Contact Day this weekend, let's revisit the origins of this significant moment in Star Trek history.
How Was April 5 Chosen?
Yes, it's time to celebrate a day that, well, hasn't happened yet.
Before we jump into a detailed explanation of what First Contact Day is within Star Trek canon, we thought we'd address a practical matter — how and why did the writers-producers of Star Trek: First Contact choose April 5 as First Contact Day?
We turned to the film’s co-writer, Ronald D. Moore, who offered a remarkably simple, sensible and succinct explanation.
"The short answer on First Contact Day is that it's my oldest son, Jonathan's birthday," Moore told StarTrek.com. "And that's the only reason the date was chosen."
What is the Significance of First Contact Day?
First Contact Day pays tribute to the flight of the warp-capable Phoenix and the pivotal first interaction between humans and Vulcans, which occurred on April 5, 2063.
The Phoenix, built and piloted by inventor Zefram Cochrane, was the spacecraft that marked mankind's first successful attempt at traveling at warp, utilizing a warp drive.
That night, shortly after launch, the Phoenix broke the warp barrier, which caught the attention of a Vulcan survey ship, the T'Plana-Hath, as it was passing Earth.
The T'Plana-Hath, landed in Bozeman, Montana, after tracking the warp signature of the Phoenix, believing this civilization was advanced enough with their discovery of faster-than-light travel.
Minutes later, a robed Vulcan, displaying the split-fingered Vulcan greeting, made the acquaintance of Dr. Cochrane, initiating Earth's first contact with another species and ushering in a new era for humanity.
First Contact was made, and it paved the way to the formation of the United Federation of Planets.
First Contact Day Watch List
Eager to discover more about First Contact and First Contact Day? We've got a watch list for you!
"Metamorphosis" (Star Trek: The Original Series) – Stars Glenn Corbett as a young Cochrane
"First Contact" (Star Trek: The Next Generation) – Starfleet’s official definition of "making first contact" is to make contact with a planet or species that is about to become warp capable. In this episode, we see just how delicate the moment of First Contact can be.
Star Trek: First Contact – The Next Generation big-screen adventure with James Cromwell in the role of Cochrane (which he reprises, briefly, on Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Lower Decks)
"Homestead" (Star Trek: Voyager) – Neelix and Naomi Wildman throw a party celebrating the 315th anniversary of First Contact Day, complete with heaping portions of Cochrane's favorite food (cheese pierogi), a classic jukebox, and Tuvok flashing the Vulcan salute and speaking the legendary line, "Live long and prosper"
"Grounded" (Star Trek: Lower Decks) – Mariner enlists her friends on a rogue mission to exonerate her mother, which includes a detour to Bozeman, Montana. In the three centuries since First Contact, Bozeman has become a tourist attraction thanks to Cochrane’s efforts. There’s even a replica of the Phoenix you can ride like a magic carpet right into space, piloted by a holographic representation of Cochrane himself!

Space Systems Command awards National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 2 contracts
April 4, 2025
ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) – Space Systems Command awarded three National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 2 contracts April 4.
These Firm Fixed-Price, Indefinite-Delivery Requirements contracts were awarded to SpaceX, United Launch Services, and Blue Origin to provide critical space support to meet national security objectives.
Anticipated values for these contracts are $5,923,580,297 for SpaceX, $5,366,439,406 for United Launch Services, and $2,386,234,812 for Blue Origin.
"A robust and resilient space launch architecture is the foundation of both our economic prosperity and our national security," said U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman.
"National Security Space Launch isn’t just a program; it's a strategic necessity that delivers the critical space capabilities our warfighters depend on to fight and win."
The Phase 3 Acquisition Strategy consists of a dual-lane approach with two separate contract types to fulfill program and national security requirements, providing assured access to space for the integrated space architecture at affordable prices.
Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration, highlighted the critical role of space dominance in national security.
"America leads the world in space launch, and through these NSSL Phase 3 Lane 2 contracts, we will ensure continued access to this vital domain," he stated.
"These awards bolster our ability to launch critical defense satellites while strengthening our industrial base and enhancing operational readiness."
The overall NSSL Phase 3 Mission Manifest has almost doubled compared to Phase 2, with an anticipated 84 missions being awarded from FY25 through FY29.
The increased manifest enabled the program to use the dual-lane acquisition strategy, creating the most cost and time efficient solutions for NSSL launch.
Phase 3 has been able to split the manifest into the commercial-like Lane 1 missions (approximately 30 missions), and Lane 2 (approximately 54 missions) which will secure assured access and the highest reliability for our most demanding, least risk-tolerant payloads.
“Today’s award culminates nearly three years of government and industry partnership to increase launch resiliency and capacity,” explained Brig. Gen. Kristin Panzenhagen, Program Executive Officer for Assured Access to Space.
“The result is assured access to space for our national security missions, which increases the military’s readiness.”
SpaceX, as the Requirement 1 provider, is anticipated to be awarded 28 missions or about 60% and ULA, as the Requirement 2 provider, is anticipated to be awarded 19 missions or about 40% of the Phase 3 Lane 2 missions from FY25 to FY29.
Blue Origin, as the Requirement 3 provider is projected to be awarded seven Phase 3 Lane 2 missions starting in Order Year 2. Mission awards in FY25–FY29 are projected to have a nominal two-year integration resulting in launches from FY27–FY32.
SSC, in partnership with the NRO, will conduct the Phase 3 Lane 2 Mission Assignment Board to assign the FY25 Order Year 1 missions, and will make those announcements separately following completion of that process, and then in October of each subsequent order year.
SSC is the U.S. Space Force’s field command responsible for acquiring and delivering resilient warfighting capabilities to protect our nation’s strategic advantage in and from space.

The chief of space operations told Congress that present policies are restricting the U.S. Space Force’s capabilities to respond to threats on U.S. assets in orbit.
During a congressional hearing Thursday, Gen. Chance Saltzman, a three-time Wash100 Award winner, discussed with lawmakers the importance of establishing a declaratory policy to move fast, especially as adversaries like China rapidly expand their presence in space.
Bureaucracy Impeding US Space Superiority
Saltzman explained to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, a bipartisan advisory group, the current process to carry out basic operations such as developing and testing capabilities and training, all of which are done in simulation.
In his written testimony, the space leader pointed out that the U.S. government and the Department of Defense have outdated ways of thinking, leading to restrictive space policies.
He said, “we restrain ourselves from doing what is needful to avoid creating improper perceptions of ‘weaponizing space.’
In reality, space has been weaponized for at least two decades, and our slowness to absorb that reality has held back our progress.”
He also raised concerns about over-classification, which affects information-sharing across the Joint Force and with partners and allies.
Saltzman said the present attitude about information sharing is “need to know” rather than “need to share,” which the official said is a more progressive take.

Ukrainian drones hit Russian explosives, fiber optic factories near Moscow
April 5, 2025 3:24 PM
Ukrainian deep-strike drones hit Russian fiber-optic and explosives factories on the night of April 4. The strikes targeted factories in Samara and Mordovia oblasts.
A source with the Ukrainian State Security Service (SBU) confirmed to the Kyiv Independent that they were behind at least the strikes in Samara Oblast.
"SBU strike drones attacked 'Promsintez' in Chapayevsk, in Samara Oblast.
The factory is one of the leading manufacturers of explosives in the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States," writes a source in the SBU, who said their drones hit the factory 20 times.
"As a result, the leadership of the factory have stopped their technological processes."
Footage from local media show attacks on Saransk in Moravia Oblast the same night. One local source identified the building hit as a factory belonging to a company called "Fiber Optic Systems."
Russian investigative outlet Insider identifies Fiber Optic Systems as the main producer of optical fiber in Russia. Fiber-optic drones are resistant to electronic warfare interference.
Russia's mass production of such drones has greatly enhanced the offensive power of the Russian military, most notably in their recent recapture of territory in Kursk Oblast.
Insider similarly identified Fiber Optic Systems as a remarkably effective link in the chain providing Russia with foreign-derived components for its war machine.
The governors of both oblasts announced no casualties as a result of the strikes.
Of the Promsintez strike, the SBU source said in a statement, "the SBU is continuing to work precisely through Russian businesses, that are part of the military-industrial complex and produce weapons for the war against Ukraine.
Such objects are absolutely legal military targets."
Ukraine has invested heavily in its long-range strike drone programs, as well as more traditional missiles, in an effort to reach Russian infrastructure far from the front.
Russia, meanwhile, uses its much larger arsenal of ballistic missiles to strike civilian targets throughout Ukraine. One such strike hit a playground in Kryvyi Rih earlier today, killing 19, including 9 children.

Ukraine Mourns 18 Killed in Russian Missile Strike=
April 5, 2025
Ukraine on Saturday mourned 18 people, including nine children, killed in a Russian ballistic missile strike on President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, as the region's governor said it was "the kind of pain you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy."
Sixty-one people were wounded, 12 of them children, Dnipropetrovsk Governor Serhiy Lysak said after emergency operations were completed overnight.
The missile attack on Friday, one of the deadliest in recent weeks, struck a residential area near a children's playground, said Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of Kryvyi Rih's military administration.
"On 7, 8 and 9 April, days of mourning will be declared in Kryvyi Rih for those killed as a result of yesterday's terrorist attacks on our city by the killer country," he said.
"Children, families, the elderly… Ballistic missile and shakedown attacks on residential areas and playgrounds… This is nothing less than a mass murder of civilians."
Pictures circulated by rescue services showed several bodies, one stretched out near a playground swing.
"This is the kind of pain you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy," Lysak said.
Russia's Defense Ministry said it "delivered a precision strike with a high-explosive missile on a restaurant" in the city "where commanders of formations and Western instructors were meeting."
It said its air defense units had intercepted and destroyed 49 Ukrainian drones overnight.
The commander of the Ukrainian army retorted that Moscow was "trying to cover up its cynical crime" and "spreading false information" about the target of the strike.
He accused Russia of "war crimes."
'They are not human'
The Ukrainian Air Force said on Saturday Russia had launched 92 drones across Ukraine overnight. Fifty-one had been shot down and around 30 others had landed without causing damage.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who said during his re-election campaign he could end the three-year conflict within days, is pushing the two sides to agree a ceasefire but his administration has failed to broker an accord acceptable to both.
Zelensky said the missile attack showed Russia had no interest in stopping its full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022.
"There is only one reason why this continues — Russia does not want a ceasefire and we see it. The whole world sees it," he said.
"The missile struck an area near residential buildings, a playground and ordinary streets.
"People who are capable of that kind of thing aren’t human, They are bastards," Zelensky said.
Zelensky on Friday met the heads of the British and French military in Kyiv to discuss a plan by London and Paris to send a "reassurance" force to Ukraine if and when a peace deal is reached.
This is one of the latest efforts by European leaders to agree a coordinated policy after Trump sidelined them and opened direct talks with the Kremlin.
"Together, we want to guarantee a lasting and solid peace in Ukraine, an essential condition for the security of the European continent," Thierry Burkhard, chief of the French defense staff, said on X on Saturday.
Burkhard and his British counterpart, Tony Radakin, also met their Ukrainian counterpart Oleksandr Syrsky and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
Kryvyi Rih, in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the front line, and has regularly been targeted by Russian drones and missiles.
Zelensky was born in the industrial city, which had a pre-war population of around 600,000 people.

Police helicopter 'near miss' during drone alert
April 4, 2025
A police helicopter was forced to abandon a mission when the pilot reported coming dangerously close to a drone.
The chopper had been sent to assist at RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk, following reports of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the vicinity.
Flight data indicated the aircraft climbed steeply and made a series of sharp turns while over the nearby town of Newmarket in November.
The National Police Air Service (NPAS), which operates the Airbus H135, would not comment as the incident was still under investigation.
However, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to police revealed the helicopter withdrew "due to a drone coming close to them".
NPAS confirmed that the helicopter, understood to have the registration G-POLJ, had been sent to the area on 22 November following reports of drone sightings.
The US Air Force said a number of unmanned aerial systems had been spotted in the vicinity of RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, RAF Feltwell in Norfolk and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
NPAS has video footage of the incident but would not release it on national security grounds, following a series of FOI requests.
What is known as an Airprox notification was sent following the incident.
These are submitted when a pilot or air traffic personnel identify a near miss in which the safety of the aircraft involved may have been compromised.
'Doing loops'
The near miss incident was detailed in an FOI request to Norfolk and Suffolk Police, made by Stuart Onyeche.
This disclosed a log entry which stated: "NPAS is withdrawing due to a drone coming close to them."
The logs contained 35 notifications related to drone sightings reported to local police between 22 and 27 November.
They contained reports, mostly from members of the public, which described drones making three loops of an undisclosed perimeter and another doing loops around Feltwell.
Sightings were also reported at Bodney Camp, another military installation, and were seen moving in the direction of Sandringham and a nearby Center Parcs.
One log entry also described a man who "grabbed the drone, got back in the car and roared off at speed", although the date when this happened was unclear.
The final entry stated: "Informant said that he has spoken to ex-USAF service men, and he now believes that a UFO/spaceship was captured by the US military during the early 80s."
Mr Onyeche, who said his work was aviation related, told the BBC the incident "raises obvious safety concerns for the public on the ground from the risk of collision above".
He added: "The public are being kept in the dark about what happened, so we are being left to join dots and speculate."
Suffolk Police referred the BBC's inquiries to the Ministry of Defence.
Scepticism
Ian Hudson, a drone commentator and analyst, extracted data from the flight tracking website ADS-B Exchange.
He said it showed G-POLJ taking off from North Weald Airfield, in Essex, at 21:13 GMT on 22 November. It arrived at RAF Lakenheath 23 minutes later before turning southwest towards Newmarket.
The chopper then climbed steeply before making a series of turns. The BBC was able to reproduce his findings.
The flight path "appears to be a search or pursuit over Newmarket", and there were reservations within the drone community about the presence of drones in the skies above the airbases, Mr Hudson said.
"There is scepticism about drone sightings at night as often there are mis-identifications," he added.
Investigations into the sightings were led by the Ministry of Defence Police.
An MOD spokesperson said: "We take threats seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites."
In February, the i-Paper published an analysis of open source data which indicated three people, linked to Russian military intelligence, had been in the area during and leading up to the sightings.
The BBC has not been able to verify these reports.

Maui Fisher Busted For Drone and Narcotics Violations
4/4/25
KEAWAKAPU BEACH, Maui – What started as a drug investigation led to possession charges, but also a fishing violation for 37-year-old Christopher Glavor of Kihei.
On Sunday, an officer from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) was contacted by Maui Police dispatch about an anonymous complaint of someone fishing using an unmanned drone.
The responding officer saw Glavor in possession of what appeared to be marijuana. The officer also observed drug paraphernalia in open view, on a table attached to Glavor’s chair.
A glass bong, loose marijuana and in a clear glass jar and in a plastic package, and a yellow wax-like substance were taken as evidence.
The substances in the packages and containers were field tested, and produced positive results for marijuana, hashish, and marijuana concentrate.
Glavor was arrested for Promotion of a Detrimental Drug in the Second Degree and two charges of Promotion of a Harmful Drug in the Fourth Degree.
During his investigation the DOCARE officer spotted a drone lying in the sand. Glavor admitted to using the drone to cast his fishing line.
He was cited for Possession or Use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle On, In, or Near Marine Waters Prohibited.
Glavor was booked, posted $600 bail, and was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Wailuku District Court on May 8.

Police use drone to search for fugitive suspect during multiple incidents
15:50, 5 APR 2025
Police used this drone camera during a series of incidents in Flintshire. Officers dealt with a medical emergency, a wanted suspect and helped paramedics among other events.
North Wales Police gave the update about their busy day in Holywell yesterday (Friday) on the force's NWP North Flintshire Facebook page - and even posted a photo of the drone.
The wrote: "Holywell residents may have noticed a hive of police activity this afternoon. We were initially in the area assisting with a medical emergency, when we noticed a male who we believe is a suspect in a number of criminal damage offences.
"He got on his toes and so we had a number of officers head over for a search and a drone. During this another incident came in where ambulance required assistance.
"Then 4 more immediate incidents all came in at the same time across the district. While all this was going on two officers called for assistance."
The spokesman added: "It's distressing for officers on scene and for officers who can't head over to help.
I'll be late off as likely will other officers ensuring any paperwork that needs completing is sorted before going home. A chaotic start to the weekend!"
It is unclear whether the suspect in the search involving the drone was caught.

Houthis claim drone strike on 'military target' near Tel Aviv
05 Apr 2025 15:42
Yemeni Houthis from the Ansar Allah rebel movement conducted a drone strike on an "Israeli military target" near the city of Tel Aviv, according to the movement’s military spokesman, Yahya Saria.
"The Yemeni armed forces carried out an operation to destroy an Israeli military target in the occupied area of Jaffa (Tel Aviv - TASS) using a drone," the representative of the movement said on the air of the Houthi-owned Al Masirah TV channel, News.Az reports citing TASS.
Earlier the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported intercepting a drone approaching the country's airspace from the east.
According to The Times of Israel, the Israeli military shot down the UAV over the Arava Desert in southern Israel.
Following the escalation of the conflict in Gaza in 2023, the Houthis issued a warning that they would bombard Israeli territory and prevent associated ships from navigating the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Although Houthi attacks stopped after a ceasefire was imposed in Gaza in mid-January, hostilities resumed in early March when the rebels announced their intention to target Israeli vessels in the Red Sea and subsequently renewed rocket strikes on targets within Israel.
On March 15, US President Donald Trump authorized military action against the Houthis, who control about one-third of Yemen’s territory.
He attributed the decision to Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. According to the US Central Command, the operation aims to protect American interests and ensure freedom of navigation.
In retaliation, the Ansar Allah movement conducted a series of attacks on the US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the northern Red Sea, utilizing missiles and drones.
There have been no reports of damage to the ship resulting from these strikes.

Viral UFO document not from CIA: Former agent
Updated: Apr 4, 2025 / 03:31 PM CDT
A declassified document from the CIA’s website has gone viral for claims it holds information about a UFO attack on troops in the then-Soviet Union.
NewsNation national security contributor and former CIA agent Tracy Walder said that though it may have been part of a CIA file, it wasn’t written by the agency.
“This is not a document that the CIA originated,” she said.
It appears to have come from the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, which Walder said is a service that takes open-source information, such as newspaper articles, and distributes them to intelligence agencies where they may be of interest.
The document recounts a story reported in the Canadian Weekly World News magazine as well as the Ukrainian paper Holos Ukrayiny.
The article talks of an alleged KGB file about an incident with a group of Soviet Union troops in Siberia who encountered a UFO on a training mission, which they shot down with a surface-to-air missile.
The encounter was said to take place somewhere between 1989 and 1990, just before the fall of the Soviet Union.
Two soldiers who survived the incident allegedly reported that five aliens, described as gray humanoids with large black eyes, emerged from the craft and then merged into a spherical object that emitted a light that turned 23 agents into a limestone-like substance.
The two surviving soldiers allegedly survived because they were standing in a shaded area.
The reporting cited an unnamed CIA source, which Walder said may have been why FBIS collected it and distributed it to the CIA.
The story was also published in 1993, shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union, and the CIA would have been very interested in information coming from the region.
The existence of the document doesn’t prove that the alleged UFO encounter happened or indicate that the CIA found the newspaper story believable.
But, Walder noted, it doesn’t disprove it either.

Sen. Gillibrand says Trump's White House clueless on NJ UAPs: "They don't know"
Apr 04, 2025
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) — Armed Services & Intelligence Committees
Ask a Pol asks:
What do you make of the White House saying the FAA knew what all these were on the East Coast?
Key Gillibrand:
“We're not concerned about most of it. We're concerned about specific drone incursions over Langley and arsenals and other sensitive military sites,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand exclusively tells Ask a Pol UAPs.
“It's very concerning, and so I think they just listened to the pablum that came from law enforcement to say we're not worried about most of the reports because most are of aircraft and other known objects.
But it doesn't answer the question. They don't know…”
Is SASC taking over Senate Intel’s fmr. UAP investigation?
“Because I asked about it in Armed Services, [SASC Chair] Roger Wicker said, ‘Did you have co-sponsors?’” Gillibrand says. “He said, ‘Let's try to look at it in this committee.’”
Caught our ear:
“We have adversaries flying drones over our bases to collect intelligence, it's a huge intelligence failure,” Gillibrand tells us.
“And so there is no excuse for not bringing them down, assessing whose they are or following them to their place of launch.”

Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), Materials Science and Aerospace Technology Application: Designing trans medium superluminal craft
April 5, 2025
Abstract and Figures
The study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) has introduced ground-breaking considerations regarding their capacity to transition seamlessly between different physical environments, including air, water, and space.
A key aspect of UAP behaviour is their apparent ability to navigate energetic fields with minimal resistance to inertia and gravity.
This paper explores the hypothesis that such trans-medium craft must possess a specialized permeable surface membrane capable of harnessing and manipulating energetic fields.
By examining the properties of this membrane-particularly its structural composition and interactions with electromagnetic (EM) and scalar fields-this research aims to infer potential principles governing advanced propulsion systems.
The paper proposes that a biopolymeric, crystalline outer layer may enable UAP-like manoeuvrability through dynamic electromagnetic manipulation, directional energy control, and resonance harmonization.
The implications of these findings extend to the fields of aerospace engineering, quantum mechanics, and theoretical physics.

'I was abducted by aliens - here are the signs you might have been too'
Updated 10:39, 05 Apr 2025
Tales of alien abduction are fairly common, especially in the West. As early as the 1960s, there have been reports of people being taken by extraterrestrials—usually during the night—often for strange experiments, only to be returned home unharmed.
Among the most famous alleged abduction cases are those of New York housewife Linda Napolitano and British twin Philip Kinsella, both of whom claim to have been taken by aliens in the same year.
Linda made headlines with her "abduction of the century" when she said aliens beamed her up from her Manhattan bedroom in November 1989.
Her account was supported by 23 people who supposedly saw her being lifted over the Brooklyn Bridge.
In 2013, she told Vanity Fair: "If I was hallucinating, then the witnesses saw my hallucination." In 2022, her startling story was adapted into the popular Netflix show The Manhattan Alien Abduction.
While extraterrestrial life has yet to be scientifically proven, Linda isn’t the only alleged abductee to come forward with chilling details of encounters with beings from outer space.
British man Philip claimed he was abducted by “reptilian” aliens in 1989 after being suddenly awakened at his Bedfordshire home in the middle of the night.
Clairvoyant Philip described being levitated and moved through his house before being strapped naked to a board, where he claims a probe was inserted into his body.
Philip spoke about that terrifying night and shared six eerie signs that could indicate you’ve had an alien encounter—without even realising it.
When recalling his first sighting of the alien figure, Philip told The Sun: "That image was the most raw and unforgettable—I will never forget their faces.
They looked like dinosaurs, but they were reptilian, about seven to eight feet tall."
Philip and his twin brother Ronald have had four unnerving UFO encounters, including capturing footage of "three white hovering objects" in 2016.
Although Philip vividly remembers his alleged abduction, he explained that most people’s memories are supposedly wiped by extraterrestrial beings.
One of the key indicators of abduction Philip mentioned was the presence of implants. He claims that aliens often leave small implants in humans about the size of a grain of rice.
Although he doesn’t know the purpose of the implant, he described it as being covered in "organic tissue" so that the body doesn’t reject it.
“Sometimes they’re very tiny, and they have a strange, hard structure—not metallic, but unusual,” he said. Philip revealed that his implant, which had been in his body for two years, was located behind his ear.
He offered tips on how to spot these potential implants, such as noticing an itchy spot or a specific problem area. He also claimed they could show up on X-rays.
American actress Fran Drescher has also publicly spoken about her alleged abduction.
In 2012, she claimed that both she and her producer husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, had been implanted with chips, noting that they both had identical scars in the same spot on their hands.
She shared this with the Huffington Post, saying, "We both have this scar. It's the exact same scar on the exact same spot."
Philip also shared some physical symptoms he experienced after his alleged abduction, including frequent and severe nosebleeds.
"I suffered profuse nosebleeds to my right nostril for two years after the incident," he recalled. "It got to the point where it was so embarrassing.
I could be sitting on the train, and it would just start pouring. Doctors were considering cauterizing it."
Interestingly, Linda also claimed to have woken up with a nosebleed after her first abduction experience, along with a strange bump on the side of her nose.
Philip revealed that he was left with three triangular marks behind his right ear after the encounter, which he believes could be part of an alleged implantation ritual.
He speculates that human tissue may be used to cover the implant.
Although potential abductees may not recall the full details of their encounters, especially if their memories have been erased, Philip believes that fragments of the experience may resurface later.
He explained the phenomenon of "screen memory," where subconscious memories of the experience emerge into the conscious mind.
"Some people have fragmented memories, but they don’t feel like dreams. They feel real."
