Chinese Shipping Earnings Face ‘Harder-Than-Expected’ Tariff Hit as Recession Risks Rise

Bloomberg April 8, 2025

Chinese shippers may see an outsized hit on earnings as the latest tariffs from US President Donald Trump risk hammering global trade.

Container liners such as Cosco Shipping Holdings Co. that focus primarily on Chinese exports will probably see a disproportionate impact, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kenneth Loh. “Chinese exports are set to be hit not just harder than other countries’, but even harder than most had expected.”

The US imposed an additional 34% tariff on almost all Chinese products last week — a move China returned swiftly — affecting most of the half-trillion dollars worth of goods Chinese firms exported to the US in 2024.

In his latest salvo, Trump further upped the ante by threatening an additional tariff of 50% on Chinese goods, adding that talks with China will be terminated unless it withdraws its retaliatory levies.

The tit-for-tat measures are prompting concern transpacific volumes and shipping rates could fall. “We see downside to earnings as President Trump pushes ahead in attempt to reduce US trade deficits,” Citigroup Inc. analysts including Amy Han wrote in a note.

The latest measures — excluding the vowed but not yet imposed 50% — bring average US tariffs on all Chinese products to as high as 65%, according to economists. That factors in existing tariffs from Trump’s first term that were maintained by the Biden administration.

The Trump administration will also end the so-called “de minimis” tariff exemptions on May 2, which currently allow packages from China and Hong Kong worth $800 or less to enter the US duty free. Airlines too, including Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. and Taiwan’s China Airlines Ltd., face increased risks given their higher exposure to e-commerce cargo revenue.

Adding to the disruption is Trump’s desire to punish Chinese-built ships, seeking a levy of at least $1 million each time a Chinese-operated or Chinese-built ship enters a US port, saying China’s dominance in ship construction was achieved unfairly and harms American interests.

Cosco Shipping signaled it’s getting prepared, Citi analysts including Kaseedit Choonnawat wrote after the group’s earnings call last month, adding that details are limited. The Shanghai-based company also warned of changes in global cargo flow patterns as policies related to tariffs could impact geopolitical issues. Its shares are down 22% so far this year.

Warning signs

Peers Orient Overseas International Ltd. and China Merchants Port Holdings Co. also warned of trade uncertainties amid intensifying geopolitical tensions during their 2024 results, even as profits grew from the year before. Elsewhere in the industry, Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S said tariffs aren’t “good news for global economy, stability and trade.”

Right now, shipping companies are starting to look more seriously into ways to better navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of trade protectionism under Trump, according to BI’s Loh.

“There’s talk of exporters assessing options that might attract lower levies relating to their shipments,” Loh said. “We are also hearing that shipping companies are showing interest in pivoting toward non-Chinese shipyards when planning new ship orders.”

China, meanwhile, is mulling front-loading stimulus, which may include subsidies for some exports and potentially alleviate some of the pain for Cosco Shipping, Orient Overseas and China Merchants.

Mitch McConnell’s Freighted Ties to a Shadowy Shipping Company

After drugs were found aboard the Ping May, a vessel owned by his wife’s family’s company, Colombian authorities are investigating.

Lee Fang October 30, 2014

Before the Ping May, a rusty cargo vessel, could disembark from the port of Santa Marta en route to the Netherlands in late August, Colombian inspectors boarded the boat and made a discovery. Hidden in the ship’s chain locker, amidst its load of coal bound for Europe, were approximately 40 kilograms, or about ninety pounds, of cocaine. A Colombian Coast Guard official told The Nation that there is an ongoing investigation.

The seizure of the narcotics shipment in the Caribbean port occurred far away from Kentucky, the state in which Senator Mitch McConnell is now facing a career-defining election. But the Republican Senate minority leader has the closest of ties to the owner of the Ping May, the vessel containing the illicit materials: the Foremost Maritime Corporation, a firm founded and owned by McConnell’s in-laws, the Chao family.

Though Foremost has played a pivotal role in McConnell’s life, bestowing the senator with most of his personal wealth and generating thousands in donations to his campaign committees, the drug bust went unnoticed in Kentucky, where every bit of McConnell-related news has generated fodder for the campaign trail. That’s because, like many international shipping companies, Chao’s firm is shrouded from public view, concealing its identity and limiting its legal liability through an array of tax shelters and foreign registrations. Registered through a limited liability company in the Marshall Islands, the Ping May flies the Liberian flag.

McConnell’s ties to the Chaos go back to the late 1980s, when James Chao began donating to the senator. In 1993, McConnell married James’s daughter, Elaine Chao, a Republican activist and former Reagan administration official who would later serve as secretary of labor in the George W. Bush cabinet. James Chao emigrated to the United States from Taiwan, and founded the Foremost Maritime Corporation upon settling in New York. The company has grown significantly over the years, from acting as maritime agent during the Vietnam War to controlling a fleet of approximately sixteen dry-bulk cargo ships in operation today.

Foremost acts as a shipping agent, purchasing vessels made primarily in China and coordinating shipment of commodities. Records reviewed by The Nation reveal that Foremost transports corn, chemicals and other goods to cities throughout the world. The company has offices in New York and Hong Kong.

==BREAKING: HUGE WIN: Supreme Court Vacates Judge Boasberg’s Orders Barring Trump From Deporting Venezuelan Gang Members Under Alien Enemies Act

by Cristina Laila Apr. 7, 2025

Another huge win!

In an unsigned order, the US Supreme Court on Monday vacated Judge Boasberg’s orders barring the Trump Administration’s removals of Venezuelan gang members under the Alien Enemies Act.

Last month, Judge Boasberg granted a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop the Trump administration from deporting thousands of Venezuelan nationals believed to be members of Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang under the Alien Enemies Act.

Far-left America-hating leftist groups, such as the ACLU and Democracy Forward, rushed to a DC court in a desperate bid to shield dangerous illegal aliens from deportation.

The high court said Boasberg lacked jurisdiction.

The Supreme Court however, said the Administration must give reasonable notice for gang members to challenge their deportations in court.

Five Supreme court Justices, Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Thomas and Alito were in favor of vacating Boasberg’s orders.

The three liberal justices Kagan, Jackson and Sotomayor dissented – ‘conservative’ justice Amy Coney Barret dissented in part.

“Importantly, as the Court stresses, the Court’s disagreement with the dissenters is not over whether the detainees receive judicial review of their transfers—all nine Members of the Court agree that judicial review is available. The only question is where that judicial review should occur. That venue question turns on whether these transfer claims belong in habeas corpus proceedings or instead may be brought under the Administrative Procedure Act. I agree with the Court’s analysis that the claims must be brought in habeas,” Justice Kavanaugh wrote in a concurring opinion.

JUST IN: The Supreme Court has vacated Judge Boasberg’s orders barring Trump’s removals under the Alien Enemies Act largely over venue — but empahsizes the administration must give “reasonable notice” for targets to challenge their deportations in court. https://t.co/rnhB90af8y pic.twitter.com/FxG9kLDhui

The fight over this case is not over.

Last week, Judge Boasberg signaled that he would hold the Trump Administration in contempt for violating his order (they didn’t).

Boasberg threatened to hold Trump officials in contempt for not bringing some of the world’s most vicious killers, criminals, and rapists back to the United States.

President Trump responded to the Supreme Court’s decision.

“The Supreme Court has upheld the Rule of Law in our Nation by allowing a President, whoever that may be, to be able to secure our Borders, and protect our families and our Country, itself. A GREAT DAY FOR JUSTICE IN AMERICA!” Trump said on Truth Social on Monday evening.
