Trump admin freezes $1 billion in funding for Cornell, hundreds of millions for Northwestern

The Trump administration on Tuesday froze $1 billion of funding for Cornell and $790 million for Northwestern, amid an investigation into alleged civil rights violations at both schools.

The funding pause largely impacts grants and contracts with the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Education and Health and Human Services, according to the New York Times.

The schools have not commented on the order so far, but the freeze comes as the Trump administration yanks other funding from elite schools in the U.S., including Ivy League schools, over noncompliance with anti-discrimination laws.

Virginia shooting leaves at least 3 dead, 3 injured

Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies received information at about 5:30 p.m. about a shooting in Spotsylvania, Virginia — a suburb about 60 miles south of Washington, D.C.

"This is an active and fluid investigation," according to SCSO officials. "No suspect(s) have been apprehended at this time… We ask the public to please stay clear of the area."

IRS Chief Quits After DOGE and Trump Immigration Officials Rampage Through Agency

IRS Acting Commissioner Melanie Krause is the third person to have that role since the beginning of the year, and there soon will be a fourth. Krause is planning to quit, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday evening, after a tumultuous period of interference from Elon Musk’s DOGE and officials within President Donald Trump’s administration seeking to enact his immigration agenda.

Krause intends to accept the Trump administration’s deferred resignation offer, two sources told The Washington Post, and would leave the IRS on April 28, shortly after the tax filing deadline on April 15.

The Post’s reporting noted that the IRS had already laid off about 7,000 employees in April, with another round of layoffs announced earlier this month — this time with an intention to cut 20,000 jobs, nearly 25% of the agency’s employees.
