Some estimates but it at over 100+ claimants per ounce of US gold. Conservatively 20+
Personally I think that most "official" gold holdings will be so snarled in lawsuits trying to figure out who actually owns it, and in some cases where it actually is since it may have been melted and recast several times and mixed with other gold in the process, that any gold that is unencumbered will be extremely valuable. And the gold the fed holds may be all but worthless as no one in their right mind will want to buy it given it's legal status. What is the Fed's balance sheet worth when their assets are tied up in lawsuits?
And here's another question: Given the "magic money computers" DOGE claims to have found, just how much money have they produced out of thin air that is otherwise completely unaccounted for?
The problem is we now know that we have no idea just how big the bubble is. And if dollars and gold are both infected what about other assets, have stocks been rehypothicated too? (spoiler alert: probably yes) What about bonds? Any asset that is based on a piece of paper becomes suspect.
Real estate is a bit different since all titles/deeds are recorded. So if you own your property outright (no mortgages or liens on it) ownership can be ascertained by going to the county assessors office and the county recorders office, which are actually the one and the same in my county. No other asset class has that protection as far as I know.
