All Canadians should be rejoicing that the federal Liberal government’s Online Harms Act is dead. But this is no time for complacency. For one thing, Mark Carney is promising — if elected — to bring it back again.

If Canadians wish to ensure the preservation of individual liberty and free speech, we must get back to first principles — and the medieval wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Online Harms Act died when Parliament was prorogued late last year. It would have broadened the definition of hate crimes, empowered the state to impose house arrest to forestall possible future hate crimes, established a Digital Safety Commissioner to enforce social media regulations, and raised the maximum penalty for any offence found to be motivated by hate to life imprisonment.

This proposed legislation went much farther than previous attempts to curtail the free speech rights of Canadians. Yet it represented a clear progression that began with the first hate speech laws enacted in the 1970s.

Such measures reflect what is called “legal positivism,” or the belief that rights only exist to the extent that governments grant them. From this perspective, there is no such thing as an “inalienable right.” Any government can choose to remove, whittle or diminish the rights of its citizens simply by lawfully creating laws that do so

If the state alone determines the scope of rights, nothing prevents a future government from restricting speech even further by, for example, expanding the definitions of “harm” and “hate” to silence any and all dissenting voices.

GM Canada says it is pausing production at its electric vehicle (EV) plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, due to low demand for its EV offerings, laying off around 500 employees.

The plant, located east of London, Ont., produces Chevrolet BrightDrop electric delivery vans and electric batteries for passenger vehicles. It started production on the vans in 2023.

Unifor, the union representing the workers, said they’ve been told by GM that “temporary layoffs” will start on April 14. It added that workers would be returning in May for “limited production.”

The union said operations will then be paused and stay idle until October.

However, when production restarts in October, it will be on a single shift operation for the “foreseeable future,” Unifor said, leading to the “indefinite layoff” of nearly 500 workers.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney says he plans to tackle problematic online content, which was the intention of proposed legislation previously introduced by the Trudeau government.

Bill C-63, intended to deal with online harms, became obsolete when Parliament was prorogued in January.

During a rally in Hamilton on April 10, as he was confronted by a heckler making accusations, Carney said, “there are many serious issues that we’re dealing with,” adding that “one of them is with respect to really just the sea of misogyny, anti-Semitism, hatred, conspiracy theories, this sort of pollution that’s online that washes over our virtual borders from the United States.”

Tech companies like Apple stand to gain relief from the exemption.

President Donald Trump exempted a range of everyday products, specifically in the electronic category, from reciprocal tariffs while importing into the United States.

Items excluded from reciprocal tariffs include smartphones, computers, servers, laptops, tablets, motherboards, processors, memory modules, machines used for manufacturing semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, flat panel displays, and related devices, according to updated guidance from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection published on April 11.

The items will be exempt from tariffs imposed on countries by Trump, and the 145 percent tariff imposed on China, which is the major manufacturer and supplier for all these components.

The tariff relief will be a boost for tech companies like Apple, whose shares had fallen since Trump announced the implementation of tariffs on April 2. Continue…

With that statement, delivered in confidential testimony to The Bureau, a Canadian Armed Forces member added his voice to one of the most powerful emerging revelations in the global search for the origins of COVID-19. His account closely matches the U.S. Department of Defense’s newly declassified conclusion that seven American soldiers fell ill with COVID-like symptoms during the same October 2019 military competition in Wuhan, China.

The American military investigation was ordered by Congress in 2021 but kept from the public until a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit forced its release. Critics now say the Biden administration suppressed the findings, which suggest U.S. intelligence agencies had early evidence of a viral outbreak tied to the Games.

The Canadian soldier believes voters deserve to know that CSIS—Ottawa’s civilian intelligence agency—also assessed that Canadian military athletes were infected in Wuhan, and that the Trudeau government chose not to inform the public. “Yes, CSIS and a number of other such organizations did interview members of the contingent,” he said of his experience upon returning to Canada. “They were professional and concerned only with facts. But when completing their interviews, they let it be known that their work and report would be suppressed.”

The Bureau has independently confirmed, through multiple confidential interviews, that Canadian intelligence did in fact interview military athletes and concluded they had experienced COVID-like symptoms while in Wuhan.

“The story of U.S. athletes becoming very sick while in Wuhan, or shortly after returning, and the institutional cover-up since—it mirrors exactly what Canadian Forces athletes experienced,” the CAF member explained. Continue…
