Canadian tourism to the United States has sharply declined amid President Donald Trump’s escalating trade war. Travel agencies have reported a dramatic drop in bookings as well as tour cancellations.

According to a report by Politico, Vancouver-based Travel Group said future bookings are down by 90 percent, while Ottawa’s Travac Tours has canceled all US trips through July. Maple Leaf Tours in Ontario reported a 70 to 80 percent drop in business.

“It was always such a happy time whether we were going to Myrtle Beach or Florida or Boston or the Cape,” said Maple Leaf Tours founder Kristine Geary, per Politico. “And now it’s anxiety and apprehension and nerves. Represented by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, Anisimov is challenging the university’s refusal to grant him a religious exemption to its COVID-19 vaccination mandate.

The case centers around a directive issued by Ontario’s Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, on August 30, 2021.

It required post-secondary institutions to give students three options: provide proof of double COVID-19 vaccination, submit a valid medical exemption, or complete an educational session on vaccine safety and undergo regular testing.

Now a major oil spill from the Keystone Pipeline is now confirmed to be significantly larger than initially reported, prompting a high-level federal investigation and renewed outrage from environmental groups.

Calgary-based South Bow Corp., the operator of the pipeline, estimates the line leaked about 3,500 barrels — equivalent to roughly 147,000 gallons of crude oil or half a million litres — making it the eighth-largest pipeline oil spill in either Canada or the US over the past decade.

By comparison, the original Keystone — not to be confused with the rejected Keystone XL pipeline — pumps about 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) of heavy oil from Alberta to Texas.

The rupture occurred last Tuesday near Fort Ransom, North Dakota, contaminating agricultural land and prompting an immediate shutdown of the 4,300-kilometre pipeline that transports crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the US Gulf Coast.

Excavation and repair work at the site has been delayed due to the presence of thick oil sludge, state environmental officials said Friday. Cleanup crews have recovered more than 1,100 barrels of crude so far, and the affected section of pipe will soon be sent to a third-party lab for metallurgical testing. Continue…

Alaska has long had ambitions to ship its natural gas to international markets, but the cost and scale of such an undertaking has held it back for decades.

But there’s been renewed interest in the megaproject since U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on his first day in office devoted to Alaska resource development. State officials, including Gov. Mike Dunleavy, have been busy in recent weeks trying to woo potential Asian buyers of the gas under long-term contracts.

Industry experts have doubts the Alaska behemoth will awaken this time, but they say Canada must be mindful of the threat it could pose to its own nascent LNG industry.

“If there’s a time to build it, now would probably be your best bet,” Enverus senior analyst Josephine Mills said of the Trump administration’s keenness on Alaska gas and the Republicans’ control of Congress.

The government of Alberta is looking to make changes to the energy grid, including allowing ratepayers to opt for hydrogen use in their utilities.

Bill 52, the Energy and Utilities Statutes Amendment Act, was introduced in the provincial legislature on April 10 by Minister of Affordability and Utilities Nathan Neudorf.

He said the changes being proposed would clear the way for innovation in the province’s energy system.

The changes would include enabling “hydrogen blending in the natural gas distribution system” for heating to homes and businesses. It’s something that would cost users more, but has less emissions, the minister said.

“The incentive is less emissions because hydrogen burns more cleanly than natural gas, even though natural gas is extremely clean. So there is that incentive there, and many, many within Alberta want to choose a lower emission future. It does come at a cost,” Neudorf said in response to a reporter’s question at a press conference on April 10.

Over two dozen current and former Canadian business executives and bank CEOs say they are backing Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives in the upcoming federal election.

In declaring their endorsement, they say the nation needs to support free enterprise, reduce red tape, restore fiscal discipline, reform the tax system, build more pipelines, and invest in energy and natural resource development.

The group of more than 30 former and current executives co-signed an open letter published in several Canadian newspapers on April 12, titled “Time for Change,” saying that the Conservatives’ plan is best suited to getting Canada’s economy “back on track.”

The signees include Fairfax Financial chairman and CEO Prem Watsa, Colliers International Global CEO Jay Hennick, former Scotiabank CEO Brian Porter, and former RBC Capital Markets CEO Anthony Fell.

“Productivity has stalled. Economic growth has slowed. Our GDP per capita is shrinking,” the letter states, adding that “this decline is not inevitable—and it’s not the Canada we know and love.”

The business leaders propose a list of remedies. One is to encourage Canadians in entrepreneurship and innovation and to let businesses grow, where “Government is not the answer—but a facilitator.” Another is to remove barriers and red tape that hinder investment and job creation. Continue…

A 2021 CSIS intelligence bulletin marked “Secret,” warned that Chinese consular officials planned to influence future Canadian elections by portraying Conservative politicians as “Trump-like” and hostile to immigrants. The document has been redacted by The Bureau.

OTTAWA — Canadian intelligence reported in 2021 that Beijing planned to interfere in Canada’s next federal election with disinformation suggesting the Conservatives “will follow the path of … Donald Trump”—a narrative now echoed in a clandestine dirty tricks operation exposed inside Prime Minister Mark Carney’s campaign.

The warning comes from a classified CSIS bulletin dated December 20, 2021 and marked Secret, distributed to Canadian departments including Global Affairs Canada, the Privy Council Office, the Communications Security Establishment, and Five Eyes intelligence partners. The report was based on information from Chinese consular officials in Canada.
