If the tail boom fails there is a possibility that it could hit and damage the main rotor.

Narrative:

A helicopter crashed in the Hudson River near Pier 40 in Manhattan, New York after an apparent in flight break up during an air tour flight. The helicopter was carrying a pilot, two adults and three children, according to law enforcement sources. No survivors are reported.
