Gretchen Whitmer Tried to Walk a Tightrope with Trump—and Fell on Her Face
Democrats skewered the Michigan governor’s Oval Office meeting, with one party operative reportedly calling it “a f–king disaster.”

APRIL 10, 2025
presidential prospect Gretchen Whitmer said that political partisanship has “infected every aspect of our lives.”
She’s right.
Which is precisely why there was no winning when she stepped into the Oval Office that same day for a meeting with Donald Trump, where he proceeded to repeat the lie that the 2020 election was “rigged” and signed executive orders launching investigations into two former officials who dared to challenge him.
Whitmer had extended an olive branch of bipartisanship—and the president thwacked her with it. “Just a f—ing disaster,” one Democratic operative told NBC News.
Whitmer’s goal in meeting with Trump was ostensibly to discuss issues impacting Michiganders. And during the visit, the president lavished praise on Whitmer, who he once called a “dictator” for imposing COVID restrictions. “She’s really done an excellent job,” Trump said Wednesday. “Very good person.”
But a compliment from Trump can be a kiss of death for Democrats—particularly against the backdrop of Trump’s actions on Wednesday. The executive orders he signed stripped security clearances from two men: Chris Krebs, former head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency who has refuted Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was stolen, and Miles Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security official who anonymously authored a scathing book about Trump’s first term.
The orders also instructed the DOJ and the Department of Homeland Security to launch investigations into both former officials. They were but the latest in a string of similar actions Trump has taken against his critics.
In a statement to NBC, a spokesperson for Whitmer said, “The governor was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump’s press conference without any notice of the subject matter. Her presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event.”
But Whitmer's inadvertent photo op hardly seemed like an accident for the White House. Instead, it exposed the risk of trying to engage in bipartisan discussions with an administration that has shown so little interest in doing do. As Trump signed the orders, “the woman from Michigan,” as Trump once dubbed her, shrank into the doorframe like Homer Simpson disappearing into the bushes. Except she didn’t disappear. It only looked like she wanted to.
