Meager returns for $1.19 trillion taxpayer money spent. The Slinky was far more bang for the buck.
Since its founding in 1958, the United States has spent nearly $650 billion on NASA in nominal dollars, according to Wikipedia and the Planetary Society. When adjusted for inflation, that figure is closer to $1.19 trillion, an average of $19 billion per year.
The initial development cost for the Slinky was a $500 loan, equivalent to around $7,500-$8,000 today. This loan was used to finance the manufacture of the first 400 Slinkys. The Slinkys were an instant hit, selling out in 90 minutes at a price of $1 each.
