US Tells Israel It Will Begin Drawdown Of Troops In Syria
Pentagon officials have told their Israeli counterparts that the US will begin a phased withdrawal of its troops from Syria within two months, the Israeli news site Ynet reported on Tuesday.
A senior Israeli official said that the US withdrawal could be partial, meaning only some of the estimated 2,000 US troops in eastern Syria could leave. Reuters later reported that the US is planning to "consolidate" its presence in Syria and will likely reduce the number of troops in the country to about 1,000.
Israel is opposed to any drawdown or a full withdrawal of US troops from Syria, and the Ynet report said Israeli officials are working to prevent it over concerns related to Turkey.
Since the regime change that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which Israel supported, the Israeli military has invaded southern Syria and has been bombing military targets across the country.
Israel now appears focused on keeping Turkish forces out of central Syria, warning it would impede the Israeli military’s "operational freedom" in the country.
Israel recently bombed the T-4 air base in Tadmur, central Syria, amid reports that Turkey is planning to establish a military presence there, and Israeli officials said the airstrikes were meant as a “message” to Ankara.
One Israeli security source told Ynet that the attacks on the T-4 base were part of "a race against time" before "the Americans pack up and leave."

CDC Advisers Consider Recommending Narrower Use Of COVID-19 Vaccines
Advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are considering advising the agency to narrow use of COVID-19 vaccines.
A majority of experts in a subgroup of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which advises the CDC on vaccines, have determined that the COVID-19 vaccines should not be universally recommended, according to a presentation Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos of the CDC delivered to the panel on April 15.
Seventy-six percent of the advisers in the subgroup studying the matter said they support a non-universal recommendation as of April 3.
That’s up from 67 percent in February.
Advisers who were polled said they would be comfortable with any non-universal recommendation, such as only recommending the vaccines for certain age groups.
“I’m very happy that we’re seriously considering a risk-based recommendation,” Dr. Jamie Loehr, an ACIP member, said during Tuesday’s meeting.
Loehr also said he was concerned that if a risk-based recommendation is implemented, it might send a message that COVID-19 is no longer dangerous, when it’s still causing hospitalizations and deaths.
Charlotte Moser, the consumer representative committee member, said she was also supportive of narrowing the recommendation. She said she was thinking that a narrower recommendation, though, should emphasize the importance of vaccinating young children.
Dr. Denise Jamieson, another member, said she did not think a narrower recommendation was wise. She noted that, according to an unpublished CDC analysis of medical claims, some three-quarters of U.S. adults have at least one condition, such as chronic liver disease, that puts them at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
Loehr said that in his own practice, the percentage is much lower.

US Taxpayers Appalled at Funding Genocide Turn to UN
Taxpayers Against Genocide (TAG), a nongovernmental grassroots mass movement comprised of more than U.S. 2,000 taxpayers who have been protesting their congressional representatives’ votes to fund Israel’s genocide in Gaza, filed an unprecedented report with the U.N. Human Rights Council on April 7.
“We have gone through all the channels open to us in our effort to stop U.S. officials from using our tax dollars to fund genocide. We have called and met with these officials, we have peacefully protested and we have taken them to federal court. To date, none of this has stopped them,” Seth Donnelly, lead taxpayer plaintiff in the federal lawsuit, told Truthout.
“The genocide in Gaza rages on, fueled by our tax dollars,” he said. “We have now elevated our struggle to the international arena, starting with our report to the U.N. Human Rights Council, as one necessary step towards countering the impunity of the U.S. government.”
The introduction to TAG’s report says:
“The focus of this report is on violations of U.S. obligations by the U.S. Congress and executive in committing residents’ tax dollars — including those of Palestinian-Americans whose families have been decimated in Gaza — to support what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC) as well as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Medecins Sans Frontieres, and many other human rights organizations have recognized as an unfolding genocide in Gaza.”
Tarik Kanaana, TAG’s lead contact for the report and a Palestinian activist in Northern California, told Truthout, “Since October 2023, our people in Gaza have suffered unimaginable horrors at the hands of Israel. Our families, our mothers and fathers, our sons and daughters, our siblings, our newborn children, our grandmothers and grandfathers, our friends and neighbors have been slaughtered, tortured to death, burned alive, starved and executed and buried in shallow graves.” He added,
“Those who survived death are facing famine and disease and will be scarred, both physically and mentally, for generations to come. Israel has, at the same time, destroyed cultural, educational, medical and municipal institutions.”

In a highly unusual move, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted on Wednesday former hostages at the Kremlin for the first time since the war in Gaza began and expressed gratitude to Hamas for what he called the “humanitarian act” of releasing them.
The meeting included Sasha Troufanov, freed in a hostage exchange in February, along with his mother, Yelena, and his partner, Sapir Cohen, both released in an earlier deal. In a video circulated by Russian state media, Putin is seen presenting flowers to Yelena and Sapir and shaking Sasha’s hand.
Throughout the conversation, Putin notably refrained from using terms like “hostages” or “captivity.” In contrast, Troufanov appealed to the Russian president to continue working for the release of the remaining hostages held in Gaza. “They are my brothers. As long as they’re there, half my heart is in Gaza,” he told Putin, who responded by pledging that Russia “will do everything possible” to help free the remaining captives.
Troufanov told the president he had been held for 498 days, prompting Putin to lean back and shake his head. Putin expressed condolences for the death of Sasha’s father, Vitaliy, who was killed in the October 7 massacre, but avoided using the word “murder.” “Unfortunately, the father of the family is no longer with you, but this is a tragedy we should not delve into now,” he said.

A 48-year-old Israeli man, formerly a resident of New Jersey and now living in Israel, has admitted to a massive fraud scheme involving the U.S. federal aid program for small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Daniel Dadon fraudulently obtained over $3.2 million from the government by submitting forged documents, false reports, manipulated bank accounts and fake claims about the number of employees in his businesses.
He now faces a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison for bank fraud, an additional 10 years for money laundering and fines that could exceed $1 million.
The indictment, filed in a New Jersey court, states that starting in April 2020 and continuing for over two years, Dadon submitted multiple loan applications under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). This program, established during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowed small businesses affected by lockdowns and the economic slowdown to apply for forgivable loans, provided the funds were used for employee payrolls and other essential expenses like rent and utilities.

The agent, Jonathan Buma, who had handled confidential human sources (CHSs) for the bureau and whose home had been raided by the FBI back in 2023, was arrested at JFK Airport in New York City in March for the alleged illegal disclosure of confidential information. He is being prosecuted in California, where he was based as an FBI agent.
Buma, whose previous claims to Congress and the media alleged that he was involved with helping special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into debunked claims of Trump-Russia collusion and who has repeatedly taken aim at Giuliani while defending the bureau’s slow walking of the Hunter Biden investigation, is now being defended by a high-profile law firm that defended Joe Biden’s son and attacked the federal investigation into him, Just the News has learned.
Scott Horton, then a lawyer for Buma, framed the FBI’s investigation as “revenge” against Buma last year, with the New York Times saying the lawyer said the FBI wanted revenge against Buma because he had “suggested that the FBI’s handling of confidential sources was affected by political bias against the Bidens and in favor of Mr. Trump’s allies.” The outlet reported that Horton “said he had met with Hunter Biden’s lawyers to discuss how Mr. Buma’s story might be of assistance.”
Horton did not respond to a request for comment from Just the News made to him through LinkedIn. The Times also reported last year that another lawyer for Buma, Mark Geragos, is also representing him. Geragos did not respond to an emailed request for comment about Buma from Just the News.
Kyla Wells, a federal defender in New York who briefly defended Buma in March after he was arrested, told Just the News this week that “Mr. Buma is now represented by Alexandra Kazarian” — also of Geragos & Geragos law.
