TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD/Gray News) - A man has been left with critical injuries after a brutal attack in downtown Tucson last weekend.
According to Pima County court documents, Jacob Couch, 32, and his wife, Kristen Couch, were sitting on a bus bench at the corner of 6th Avenue and Broadway Boulevard on April 5 when a man, later identified as 25-year-old Daniel Michael, approached them and yelled at them.
Records showed that Jacob Couch said something back to the man, and that’s when he hit Jacob Couch in the neck with what his wife said was a machete-type knife.
Jacob Couch suffered a massive wound to the back of his neck and bled profusely before being rushed to the hospital.
He’s not expected to make it right now,” Jacob Couch’s younger brother, Luke Couch, said. “We’ve just been taking it how we can.”
The 32-year-old victim’s family said he is at Banner University Medical Center on life support in the ICU.
“The injury cut the artery in the back of his neck in half; it went so deep that it hit his skull,” Jacob Couch’s Sister-In-Law, Erica Sims, said.
Jacob Couch’s loved ones say he and his wife were traveling by bus from California back home to Alabama following a vacation. The two decided to stop in Tucson to check out the area.
Court documents stated video surveillance captured the suspect walking away calmly from the scene. After reviewing the footage, investigators were able to identify him as Michael.

Officers were able to locate Michael at his home three days later.
Documents showed that investigators found a hatchet in Michael’s apartment while performing a search warrant, as well as clothes worn during the attack.
Authorities said when Michael was confronted with surveillance video of him in the area of the scene, he confirmed it was him.
Documents stated that Michael initially denied any involvement, but later admitted he had been drinking heavily and didn’t remember anything. Authorities said the 25-year-old suspect remembered confronting Jacob Couch, but details as to what happened between the two men remain unclear.
“If you’re going downtown when you’re drunk carrying a large machete like that, you have no other intentions other than to cause harm to somebody,” Luke Couch said. “He went down there looking for trouble, and it just so happened to be my brother who is not going to make it home from this.”
Michael was charged with two counts of aggravated assault. If Jacob Couch dies, Michael will likely face more serious charges. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
Luke Couch said this was a senseless act of violence. He says his brother was his first hero and they will do whatever it takes to make sure justice is served.
“Ever since I was a kid, he was my idol,” Luke Couch said about his brother. “I always wanted to be just like him growing up. My brother was a sweet, sweet person. He’d never hurt a soul.”
The Couch family said they are holding their memories of Jacob Couch close, as they pray for a miracle.
Loved ones have set up a GoFundMe to gather donations. They said the couple has two children..
