Over 1,000 pages of documents relating to Yale University’s Skull and Bones could be released this summer — shedding new light on the secretive society.
Archivists at the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas are poised to reveal files relating to Skull and Bones on July 12 unless Bush — a member of the secretive club, or President Obama, move to block a Freedom of Information Act request, according to the National Archives, which oversees White House records stored in the Bush library.
The National Archives sent out a letter last month to lawyers for both the Bush and Obama administrations, announcing that it intended to make some 3,404 pages of records available to the public, including 1,650 pages related to Skull and Bones.
“Included is correspondence from individuals, organizations, and children to President George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Andrew Card, and Karl Rove; routine memoranda regarding government awards and promotions; and draft correspondence from the White House with background material,” the National Archives said in its notice.
The group was founded in 1832. It’s well-connected members meet in a windowless building called “The Tomb,” and engage in an assortment of rituals, including taking a vow of silence. Other Bonesmen include Bush’s grandfather Prescott Bush, noted conservative William F. Buckley Jr., and Secretary of State John Kerry. Society lore has it that it was Prescott Bush who dug up and stole the skull of Geronimo from the Apache’s grave in1918.

Advancing Equity: Our Way Forward
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is committed to improving child welfare system outcomes by weaving equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging into all aspects of the Department’s practices, policies, operations, and services.
Historically, various populations have experience disproportionality and disparity in child welfare systems across the country, including Black and African American, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and other gender–nonconforming people (LGBTQ+).
DCFS intends to improve outcomes for children and families by working closely with community partners, stakeholders, the Chief Executive Office’s (CEO) Anti-Racism, Diversity and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative, and partners in other County departments.
History of Equity Work at DCFS
For decades, DCFS has championed numerous strategies to improve the outcomes of overrepresented and marginalized populations within the Los Angeles County child welfare system.
The following are some notable moments in DCFS’ history of equity work:
1987 — Asian Pacific Program established, the first such unit in the Department dedicated to a specific racial group.
1989 — American Indian Unit established to work on cases jointly supervised by DCFS and tribal nations as mandated by the Indian Child Welfare Act.
1994 — Deaf Services Unit established to centralize the Department’s efforts to meet the needs of children and families who are deaf or hard of hearing.
2012 — Center for the Study of Social Policy issued the Child Welfare Practice: Creating a Successful Climate for Change Findings and considerations from an Institutional Analysis focused on the challenges faced by African American children and families in the Los Angeles County child welfare system.
2019 — Board of Supervisors approved the Department’s request to establish an Office of Equity.
2020 — Board of Supervisors adopted a motion that created the Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative.
2021 — LGBTQ+ Champions designated in all 20 DCFS regional offices and contracts executed with community agencies to provide LGBTQ+ youth services tailored to their needs.
It is the department’s desire and hope that staff, community partners, and advocates will remain energized and engaged in this work to drive strategies that bolster equity for the children and families who receive services from DCF
