Operation Double Trouble: Dozens charged with document, benefit fraud

Twenty-eight defendants, most of whom are in the country illegally, are charged with using stolen identities to obtain a total of over $250,000 in government benefits.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions was in Boston Thursday to announce the case alongside U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling.

"You do not get to come to America illegally, lets just make that clear," Sessions said in a long preamble to his remarks about Operation Double Trouble.

Lelling said the defendants arrested in Operation Double Trouble face charges of document and benefit fraud.

"The goal of this enforcement operation is two-fold: To help preserve the integrity of national borders and protect public funds so they are only used by Americans who are lawfully entitled to receive them," Lelling said.

Of the 28 defendants in the case, Sessions said 22 were illegal aliens. Authorities have arrested 21 of the suspects, he said.

Nineteen of the defendants have prior criminal records, Sessions said. One was a heroin dealer and another was a convicted murderer who had escaped from incarceration in Puerto Rico.
