Woke Nonprofit Is Hijacking America's 250th Birthday Celebration 1/2
Travis Ekbom April 25, 2025
Next year marks the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence — the semiquincentennial. Unfortunately, instead of a yearlong birthday party and a celebration of American history, the stage is being set for 2026 to be a year of neurotic self-loathing.
The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission (also called America 250) was created to provide national coordination for next year’s commemorative events. Ostensibly, each state and territory has also appointed its own independent committee to plan more local contributions to the festivities. In reality, a minimum of 14 states have adopted programming recommendations from a single non-profit called the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH).
The motivation driving the AASLH’s recommendations is neither celebratory nor constructive. John Dichtl, the president and CEO of the AASLH, recorded a Zoom presentation in 2021 in which he explicitly outlined their goals. He describes 2026 as a “once in a generation opportunity to critically engage with our nation’s history,” and a chance to “foster critical awareness of our faults, past and present, and the changes we need to make now to move toward justice.”
To advance this cause, they have produced The AASLH’s Field Guide for the Semiquincentennial. This guide provides five themes around which programming should be oriented: Unfinished Revolutions, Power of Place, We the People, American Experiment, and Doing History.
These recommended themes are designed to steer programming away from celebrating American independence and instead undermine American identity and further a political agenda.
The “Unfinished Revolutions” theme treats the American Revolution as nothing more than a touchstone for launching into discussions around how “people have continually challenged America to live up to our highest ideals.” None of the recommended programming under this theme is geared toward educating people about America’s founding. On the contrary, it prescribes asking “Beyond the Revolution itself, what were other revolutionary moments in the history of our country, our states, and our communities?”
The only element under the “Power of Place” at all related to the Revolution is the question “What was happening in your community during the Revolutionary Era?”Of course, most of the current geography of the United States was not part of the original 13 colonies. This will require educators or historical interpreters to shift the discussion away from the founding to “Indigenous peoples’ past and present connections with American spaces” as well as “the profound and unequal consequences of imperial expansion and colonization across the continent.”
The “We the People” theme is equally superficial in its connection to 1776.One might anticipate an exploration of who the people of the colonies were, not just the politicians but the average citizens who made up the Minutemen, or who farmed the land, or raised the children.Instead, the programming is decidedly contemporary and focused on unequal distributions of power. It orients discussion around “Who has been, and remains, excluded from full participation and representation in our democracy?” The AASLH also suggests considering the questions of “Who is considered an ‘American’ — and who gets to decide?”
These questions are not useful for educating people about the Revolutionary Era. They can, however, be useful inredirecting discussion away from that subject and toward arguments about expanding the franchise for non-citizens and people under 18.They could also generate discussion about racial disparities in the justice system since many states bar convicted felons from voting.

The “American Experiment” section continues with more politically loaded questions. Here, the AASLH skeptically adds sneer quotes when asking how “revolutionary” the American Revolution was. They then shift focus to state and local governments with the questions like, “How was your local and state government organized?” and “Who did it serve and who does it continue to exclude?”
These questions are not passive inquiries. They are deliberately designed to nudge the respondent into diminishing the significance of the American Revolution. It ceases to be a righteous triumph against an unjust monarchy and becomes simply a transition from one corrupt tyranny to another. Like the others, this theme is not intended to broaden knowledge of the Revolution or deepen understanding of it. Rather, as the guide says, it is to “… inspire action and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.”
The final theme, “Doing History,” focuses on asking who has been historically silenced or excluded from traditional presentations. Again, the American Revolution is a pretense, quickly dismissed so discussion can instead be about “inclusivity” and the value of “other disciplines” aside from history.
This theme, along with the rest of the AASLH’s field guide,is a blueprint for deconstructing America by delegitimizing our founding. This is “The 1619 Project” on steroids.
In 2021, many states passed laws restricting teaching rooted in critical race theory, intersectionality, and similar race-based theories. Dichtl has made clear his contempt for efforts to abolish racialized education and has boasted that he plans to use the opportunity presented by America 250 to work around those restrictions. To support this circumvention, the AASLH sent out 20,000 copies of their field guide to historians, scholars, and teachers. The ubiquity of the guide is no doubt why states like Wisconsin, Idaho, and even Texas have all embraced this programming for their planning committees.
As Howard Zinn put it, “you can’t be neutral on a moving train.” Existing traditions, values, and culture are either being reproduced or they are being dissolved and dismantled. The AASLH and their like-minded allies have recognized America’s 250th anniversary as a major cultural battlefield. They are doing everything they can to direct the train away from jubilant affirmation toward compulsive deconstruction.
In 1976, after the resignation of the president, years of leftist terror bombings, and several political assassinations, the bicentennial provided the nation with a fresh coat of bold, patriotic paint. In contrast, the semiquincentennial is shaping up to be yet another deluge of heritage-effacing turpentine.
Patriotism cannot be allowed to go out of fashion. If it does, less sophisticated theories of shared destiny will reassert themselves in the form of destructive prejudice.
The AASLH has produced a field guide aimed at accelerating the erosion of our unifying convictions.

The New York Times Downplays ActBlue’s Suspect Behavior To Run Cover For Democrats 1/2
BY: LOGAN WASHBURN
APRIL 27, 2025
When President Donald Trump directed the DOJ to investigate the Democrat cash machine ActBlue, The New York Times was quick to paint it as partisan — claiming it “steps up Republicans’ effort to cripple their opponents’ political infrastructure.”But Trump’s direction is based on evidence that suggests the platform could be breaking federal law.
Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi on April 24 to “investigate and take appropriate action” regarding allegations of “‘straw’ or ‘dummy’ contributions and … foreign contributions” to American elections through ActBlue and similar services. As The Federalist previously reported, concerns about loopholes and potentially illegal activity have led to multiple probes into the platform.
The Times interviewed Scott Walter, president of Capital Research Center, as one of the few voices defending Trump’s call for investigation in the recent article. He “suggested that the memorandum was about compliance with election law, and was not an effort to undermine Democrats’ electoral prospects,” according to the outlet, though it buried his statement near the end of the story and quickly dismissed his points.
Walter also told The Federalist he was “disappointed the New York Times, in … recent stories on ActBlue and other left-wing infrastructure groups, has failed to include crucial facts about ActBlue its own reporting put on the record.”
Covering For Democrats
ActBlue is a massive fundraising platform for Democrats that has fallen under legal scrutiny in recent years. When then-President Joe Biden was booted from the party’s 2024 ticket, his replacement,Kamala Harris, raised a staggering $310 million in less than one month, as The Federalist previously reported. The Harris campaign’shaul drew attention to “potentially illegal” activity on the ActBlueplatform, and Republicans launched various investigative efforts.
TheNYT article fear-mongered about concern “across the Democratic Party” that “any entity that has used ActBlue could soon find itself enmeshed in an investigation from a hostile Justice Department.”
In a March 5 report, the Times documented the “internal chaos” plaguing ActBlue, “with at least seven senior officials resigning[in February] and a remaining lawyer suggesting he faced internal retaliation.” The piece claimed to break reporting on a letter sent by ActBlue unions, in part calling on the organization’s board to “hire an outside counsel to take ‘investigatory actions to better understand the current state of the organization'” and “evaluate” its CEO amid the turmoil. The unions also “expressed particular worry about the departures of staff members who are experts on legal and compliance issues,” according to the March 5 report.
The Times briefly acknowledged the unions’ expressed concernsabout the state of the organization in its Thursday piece on Trump’s direction to the DOJ, but failed to explicitly mention the letter’s call for investigation.
Walter said thisdetail was also omitted froma March 19 Times report that paints the Trump administration’s apparent efforts to investigate ActBlue and other leftist “institutions” as politically motivated.
“[T]he paper’s two recent stories were so keen to defend the group amid investigations by Congress and the administration that =they failed to include prior reporting that ActBlue’s own unions== have called for an outside investigation,” Walter said.
In its Thursday coverage of Trump’s call for investigation into ActBlue, the Times alsobrushed aside concerns that the platform “allows straw and foreign donations,” which are illegal under federal law, claiming such concerns are “thus far unsubstantiated.” The piece also highlights an ActBlue spokeswoman’s comment characterizing the organization as “vital” and “strictly” law-abiding.
But, according to an early April interim report from the House Committees on Administration, Judiciary, and Oversight and Government Reform, ActBlue internal documents reveal the organization itself has “in recent years …detected at least 22 significant fraud campaigns” — nine of which had foreign ties.

“ActBlue’s internal documents and communicationspaint a damning picture: despite repeated instances of fraudulent donations to Democrat campaigns and causes from domestic and foreign sources, ActBlue is not demonstrating a serious effort to deter fraud on its platform,” the report reads.
According to the report, ActBlue’s conduct could potentiallyfall in violation of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971. These findings helped form the basis for the recent federal investigation.
According to the House interim findings, ActBluestopped accepting “all donations made using gift cards” in September, but, despite such policy changes, “major gaps in ActBlue’s fraud-prevention practices remain.”
In October, CRC InvestigativeResearcherParker Thayersaid he donated through the platform with a gift card, suggesting a potential security gap.
Notably, ActBlue only began requiring the safeguard of a card verification value, or CVV, with donations last year following heightened scrutiny, as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton indicated.
The House committees’ report was released less than a month after a group of Republicancongressmen sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressing concern about “fraud and evasion of campaign financelaw by individuals exploiting online contribution platforms, especially ActBlue.”
The lawmakers requested access to certain reports “containing the term ‘ActBlue'” related “to money laundering, counterfeit credit/debit card, credit card or debit card fraud, false statements, wire transfer fraud, or identity theft.” The April interim report cited other recent probe letters lawmakers sent to ActBlue amid the House committees’ larger effort to investigate the platform.
Walter suggested the Times’ recent reporting on ActBlue revealsmisplaced priorities.
“It and other outlets ofleft-wing opinion … used to care about campaign finance violations, especially if foreign moneymay be involved,” he told The Federalist, “but apparently the big questions about ActBlue’s compliance mustn’t be investigated by the normal authorities.”
(How much was NYTs getting from the democrats to lie about how great and honest they are, they certainly don’t lie for free?)

Ukraine does not possess the military might necessary to retake Crimea by force, Vladimir Zelensky has conceded. The peninsula joined Russia in 2014 following a referendum.
The vote was held in the wake of a Western-backed coup in Kiev earlier that year and amid fears of forced Ukrainization of the predominantly Russian-speaking region. Ukraine has continued to claim sovereignty over Crimea, repeatedly vowing to take it back.
On Friday, Interfax-Ukraine quoted Zelensky as saying that “it’s true what President Trump says… that Ukraine does not have enough weapons to regain control of the Crimean Peninsula by force.”
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope however that further sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Russia would be conducive to future discussions over “territorial issues,” but only after Kiev and Moscow have sealed a ceasefire.
In an interview with Time Magazine published on Friday, US President Donald Trump stated that “Crimea will stay with Russia” under any peace deal, adding that Zelensky also understands this.
Trump went on to claim that the peninsula was “given” to Russia by former US President Barack Obama, and has “been with them for a long time.” He also noted that the majority of Crimeans speak Russian.
In a post on his Truth Social platform later that day, Trump claimed that Ukraine and Russia “are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to ‘finish it off’.”
According to media reports, the agreement proposed by Washington includes US recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, a “freezing” of the conflict alongthe current front line, and acknowledgment of Moscow’s control over large parts of the four former Ukrainian regions that voted to join Russia.
Zelensky, by contrast, reiterated on Friday that Kiev’s “position is unchanged: only the Ukrainian people have the right to decide which territories are Ukrainian.”
That same day, the Washington Post, citing anonymous sources, reportedthat European leaders were pressing Ukraine to accept the likelihood that it would be forced to cede certain territoriesto Russia as part of a peace accord during a high-level meeting in London on Wednesday.
According to the newspaper, Western negotiators have a sense that Ukraine “may be willing to endure effective Russian control of Crimea,” as long as Kiev is not required to legally recognize it as such.

Moscow accuses Ukrainian troops of killing civilians seeking food
Russian investigators have uncovered more war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces during their incursion in Kursk Region
The Russian Investigative Committee has collected new evidence and gathered accounts of alleged war crimes committed during the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk Region, including killings of civilians looking for food and murders during widespread looting.
The agency highlighted a handful of new cases over the week, sharing the accounts of those who survived the Ukrainian occupation.A woman from the village of Plekhovo testified that Ukrainian troops murdered her son in early September 2024, as he tried to retrieve some food from his house.
“According to the mother’s testimony, the man’s body was found with multiple gunshot wounds and his hands tied,” Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said. The woman also testified that the Ukrainians went on a looting spree immediately after entering the region in early August last year, breaking into homes and garages to steal people’s belongings, as well as their cars.
A similar incident was reported by a resident of Bondarevka, a village near the town of Sudzha. The woman told investigators that Ukrainian forces killed a local man who had gone to get some bread. The civilian was gunned down as he rode his bike in the street, according to the eyewitness.
A resident of Dmitryukov, a small village to the southeast of the city of Sudzha, testified that his father was killed by Ukrainian troops, who demanded his car, threatening to burn the vehicle and his house down.Although the man surrendered his vehicle, the Ukrainians still shot and killed him.
All of the incidents are being investigated under separate criminal cases, with those behind them facing assorted charges, including premeditated murder, terrorism, and marauding.
Mounting evidence of war crimes committed by Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk Region began emerging early this year, as Moscow gradually reclaimed its territory. The most notable incidents include massacres in the villagesof Russkoye Porechnoye and Nikolayevo-Daryino, where dozens of civilians are said to have been raped, tortured, and killed by Ukrainian troops. Several captured Ukrainian servicemen admitted under interrogation that they committed the crimes, insisting they were acting on the orders of their superiors.
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Ukrainian forces had been completely driven out of Kursk Region. According to Moscow’s latest estimates, Ukrainian losses during the incursion amounted to more than 76,000 servicemen killed and wounded, with the force sustaining heavy material losses as well.

New sanctions on Russia would mean two more years of war – Rubio
Washington is hoping to end the Ukraine conflict through diplomacy and expects the next week to be “very critical” for negotiations
The US administration has abstained from imposing new sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine conflict, believing such a move would jeopardize negotiations and prolong hostilities, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.
Speaking to NBC News’ Meet the Press on Sunday, Rubio questioned the usefulness of placing new restrictions on Moscow, ==stating Washington was “hoping to see” whether the diplomacy would work first.=•
“The minute you start doing that kind of stuff, you’re walking away from it, you’ve now doomed yourselfto another two years of war and we don’t want to see it happen,” the top diplomat said.
Rubio claimed that the US is the only country or institution speaking to both Kiev and Moscow, andonly US President Donald Trump has the potential to bring the warring sides to the negotiating table.
The upcoming week is expected to be “very critical”for the White House with regard to the talks, as theadministration is trying to make a “determination about whether this is an endeavor that we want to continue to be involved in.”While Washington does not want to walk away, it does not want to “spend time on something that’s not going to get us there”either, the secretary explained.
“There are reasons to be optimistic, but there are reasons to be realistic. We’re close, but we’re not close enough,” he said.
The remarks from the US secretary of state come a day after Trump threatened Moscow with new sanctions over the conflict, accusing Russia’s leadership of trying to drag out hostilities and of “shooting missiles” into Ukraine for “no reason” over the past few days. Moscow maintains it only targets facilities and infrastructure used by Kiev’s military, and has repeatedly denied accusations of staging indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas.
Trump’s threats came as Moscow once again reiterated its readiness for discussions with Kiev without preconditions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the topic was brought up by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Friday.
Ukraine’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, explicitly banned negotiations with Russia for as long as Putin is in charge back in October 2022. Since then, he has seemingly softened his position, claiming the negotiating ban concerned everyone in the country but himself. Most recently, Kiev has demanded an unconditional ceasefire before any direct talks can happen.
